"GEFORCE GTX 980 GAMING LE EDITION 4096MB GDDR5 PCI-EXPRESS GRAPHICS CARD"

The new NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980/970 is powered by the next generation NVIDIA Maxwell Architecture, giving you incredible performance, unmatched power efficiency, and cutting-edge features.

Maxwell is the most advanced GPU architecture ever made, designed to be the engine of next generation gaming. Inspired by light, it was designed to solve some of the most complex lighting and graphics challenges in visual computing. For the first time, gaming GPU's can dynamically render indirect light using the new VXGI (Voxel Global Illumination technology). Scenes are significantly more lifelike as light interacts more realistically in the game environment.

The GTX 980 is the worlds fastest GPU and the GTX 970 offers the most advanced performance in its class. Each delivers 2x the performance of previous-generation card, bringing new gaming experiences to virtual reality, and ultra resolution 4k displays.

Enable the detail of 4k monitors, on a 1080P display. DSR produces smoother images by rendering a game at a high resolution, then downscaling it to the native resolution of the display using advanced filtering.

GeForce GTX 980 and 970 cards support tear-free, super-fast NVIDIA G-Sync monitor display technology including 4k. Together, these technologies provide the most immersive and competitive gaming experiences possible.

Get VR Ready with GeForce® GTX.
GeForce® GTX graphics cards provide a powerful next-generation platform for the ultimate immersive virtual reality experience. Immersive VR requires seven times the graphics processing power of traditional 3D apps and games. NVIDIA's unique set of features-such as multi-res shading-mean you get the right level of performance, image quality, and latency to ensure your VR experience is nothing short of amazing.

That's a really good discount. Trouble is, is it worth it over a 970? From the benchmarks I've seen, the difference is often not enough to justify the extra cost.

im looking at 980s at the moment and thinking is it worth buying or wait....
i did look at 390x cards and just git confused at wildly differing opinions from crap to 980 equivalent.. so sticking with nvidia so i can stream to a shield console in the future

The rumors of a consumer release of a Polaris GPU have been ongoing. One theory is they're holding back to bleed AMD dry, as the market for GPUs stagnates while people "wait to see" the impact Polaris will have on the market. It's the same as any tech story, you could wait forever for the next big thing to drop.

if you're unsure, just check out some reviews for yourself, takes an hour or so...
https://www.techpowerup.com/reviewdb/Graphics-Cards/AMD/R9-390X/

Much prefer the 390x over the 980, much cheaper to.

Honestly would buy neither with the new cards coming out, if you've waited this long, just wait a little longer... if you can't wait, just get a 750ti or if you want to play games in FHD at 60fps then get a radeon 380

Polaris is AMD's offering. I think you mean Pascal. Little Pascal rumoured in May, Little Polaris in July. Big versions by the end of the year. If commentary is to be believed both are significant upgrades over Maxwell with Polaris possibly nudging it! I would 100% WAIT.

If you don't game at 1440p I would just wait for the new card release and then pick up a couple of cheap 970's on fleabay. If your power supply is up to snuff just SLI them up for uber performance on the cheap! I did it with my 780ti's and it allowed me to comfortably skip the 970 / 980.

If you do game at high resolution though you may want to cough up for something with a bit more VRAM from the next gen.

I would rather have a 290x over this.
More vram, faster , better in dx12 which is going to be the norm very soon and it will be better supported over the life time vs a end of life nvidia card as they stop full support when a new card drops.
Great price and heat added but tbh I wouldn't buy a card now as 8 weeks the new cards could be here or maybe less for amd as they look to be first out the gate this time.

Dependent on what you really want it for. Personally I would pick up a cheap second hand mid range offering (GTX 960 or Rad 280) sit with it for a couple of months and then sell it after the new cards come out. Because these cards are already "out of date" so to speak the deprecation bump will be modest and they will still provide respectable performance while you wait for the arrival of the new cards.

The older Hitman: Absolution is the other one, isn't it?

And then every single other game on PC (i.e. over ten thousand titles) will run better on a 980, if memory serves.

Here, quick product comparison - from a respected site.

Not that I'm recommending a 980, mind you - I'd recommend a 390 or a 970 instead, if for some reason somebody couldn't wait to see what happens in June.

There's a benchmark video on Youtube showing Rise of the Tombraider at very high settings at 1080p running on a 960/970/980. With the 960 you're pretty-much looking at a 30fps lock because it gets nowhere near 60fps. With the 970 you get 40-50fps. With the 980 you get well north of 60fps.

On that game the performance difference between the 970 and 980 is more like 25%, more than I thought. It also gives you the headroom to be sure of running 60fps.

Still not sure it's worth the uplift in price, but if you've no tolerance for turning settings down, or living with dropped frames, the 980 could be useful.

I will just leave this here.

I believe it's Volumetric lighting using ASYNC Compute this time (lots of use cases for it btw).
25% faster on a Fury X over a 980Ti. A 390x is 10% than a 980Ti. The one I like the most is the 380x matching the GTX970.

You had an excuse to deny it was beneficial when I was trying to tell everybody what was going to happen. I used logical reasoning and study to realise the truth but you would have called that guess work. (The greatest inventions in the world come from logical reasoning don't you know.)
You no longer can do that. The truth is real.

I too can't wait for the new GPU's to arrive.
The thing I will be most interested is watching both vendors cards be benchmarked on all current and future DX12 ASYNC games (Doom and Deus EX: mankind should take the total to around 8 - 10 titles at that time). Will Pascal perform better with DX12? Marginally, yes, as it has some sort of pre-emption for compute commands meaning it will have a correct order, this will gain 1-2% rather than drop 1-2% as Nvidia GPU's have been doing in most DX12 games until now. There will be no more ASYNC performance boost though. Still no ASYNC compute.

12 Apr 16 2 #74
Errr... link? Because that sounds like another lie to me. Are you confusing me with someone else, perhaps?

What you have said is that it will make AMD GPUs outperform similarly-priced Nvidia GPUs in every single DX12 game that ever gets released. (Happy to provide a link, if you'd like?) But something tells me that AMD hasn't done so well in all DX12 games... right?

OK, you've lost me. What are you saying you've just invented?

Yes, that's exactly the problem. Eight games on a platform with 10,000+ games. Thank you for finally admitting it.

It's ironic that all you do is shout about async compute, and you also erroneously capitalise it every time, too.

I'm not part of your little Nvidia versus AMD spat. I'm an adult with a job and a family - I have stable emotional connections in real life, so I don't need to worship a tech company to fill some void in my life. When we look at the DX12 facts... hey, look, four DX12 games benched. Two wins for AMD, two wins for Nvidia. Shock, horror. It's almost as if you're... wrong. Again. Like you were about the GDC. Like you were about Crimson drivers never killing a card, and you were about AMD being "commended" for it. Like you were about the 300 series being revolutionary, and being Tonga-based, and you were about everyone abandoning Nvidia last year. A mistake now and then is fine. Never-ending mistakes, lies and paranoia about the "Nvidia Mafia" simply highlight the problems with mental healthcare in the NHS.

Oh, and I'll just leave this here:

http://www.overclock3d.net/gfx/articles/2016/04/06122959284l.jpg

Refresh my memory - was the Fury X faster than the 980Ti, or was it the other way around? That's the problem with using shoddily-programmed ports as your example cases. Listen to the grown-ups for once. We don't yet have enough information to draw conclusions.

Funnily enough, looking back at your past comments, I've just realised what it is that you "invent". :man:

ASYNC compute is real, it offers performance far greater than Nvidia can offer on their GPU's, and it makes Nvidia fanboys squirm.
I LOVE IT!
One developer might find 5-10% in one game, other developers find much more in other games. What are you unable to comperehend here?
Hanging on the word of one developer when others have proven more performance boost in their own titles are you?
Hilarious.
Even if were only 5-10% at most in games - Its still beats Nvidia GPUs. Haha
BetaRomeo
12 Apr 16 1 #78
It looks like you're the one not 'comperehending' here. That article was talking about the AotS devs and Hitman - that's two developers, not one. But if you like, we'll disregard both Hitman and AotS for anything A.S.Y.N.C. C.O.M.P.U.T.E.-related in future, shall we? (Seems bizarre to me - you've used them as examples of the amazing, the wonderful, the incredible A.S.Y.N.C. C.O.M.P.U.T.E. in literally dozens of your comments, and now you're saying we should ignore them? That's scarily close to admitting you were wrong!)

Except when it doesn't, of course. What, you didn't know that Rise of the Tomb Raider uses A.S.Y.N.C. C.O.M.P.U.T.E.? Really? I'm astonished that we've uncovered a gap in your knowledge. Usually you are the very model of meticulousness and professionalism.

Sounds like you're a little behind the times... here it is, over a month ago.A.S.Y.N.C. C.O.M.P.U.T.E. added to Rise of the Tomb Raider on PC. Didn't you flog copies of RotTR and its season pass recently? Odd that you're not up-to-date on what you're buying and selling. (And even stranger that you're happy to profit from GameWorks titles! Morals of convenience, I suppose.)

"The above advantage we feel is the most important one for Rise of the Tomb Raider, but there are many more advantages that make us excited about DirectX 12. Another big feature, which we are also using on Xbox One, is asynchronous compute. This allows us to re-use GPU power that would otherwise go to waste, and do multiple tasks in parallel."

(Huh. Bizarre how this technical guy says "asynchronous compute" instead of "ASYNC compute". I guess he doesn't know how to say it correctly!)

Michael Gove's legacy continues to haunt us, I see. What do you teach children about being wrong all the time, every day, in every single comment they make? Wouldn't it be more expedient to teach them to check their facts first, to save everybody some time? Anyway, don't admit it just yet - wait a second, let me just grab some popcorn - OK, I'm ready! You may admit being wrong now.
