Writing this on a g3 don't recommend it that highly. Quite a lot of lag and prone to overheating and short battery life. Others have had a good experience, but mine hasn't been!

Can vouch for this phone - best one I've ever had.
Have owned it over a year now (albeit the 3GB RAM, 32GB version) and it is very fast, never had a single problem and it looks/feels amazing in the hand - I've had plenty of compliments on the design of the phone (white version).
The tiny bezels (still one of the smallest bezels on the market) really make the stunning quad HD display stand out. SD card slot and removable battery is very handy - even with the 32GB version I added another 32GB memory card for all my music, and I've replaced the battery with a fresh one a few months ago (costs around a tenner for a genuine LG one if I recall) and its very handy to be able to switch out the battery on the fly.
A few small yet highly effective features which I'll miss if I move phones, are the tap to wake function and power/volume on the back.
Tap to wake is so useful, just two quick taps on the screen wakes it up onto the lock screen, which you really take for granted when you use it so often to just quickly and effortlessly check your phone without picking it up (e.g. on a table). Double tap to turn the screen off too. I always end up double tapping my Blackberry work phone, which annoyingly doesn't work - you really appreciate it when you use a phone without the feature.
Volume/power on the back takes getting used to, but it becomes very natural. When you hold your phone your finger is usually at the back, so it's a natural place to put the power button - you don't have to adjust your fingers or holding position to turn the phone on and off. Same for volume.
Performance is fantastic as you'd expect, pretty much every game plays well aside from a few very demanding games released this year. Admittedly the phone was finally beginning to lag a bit in some apps, but after updating to Android 6.0 last week it's blisteringly fast again, like new! Phone is pretty light too.
Although as a note, I have the 3GB RAM version from Germany which will be able to handle multi-tasking better. The UK only got the 2GB version, but I don't think performance will be too noticeable.
To address some concerns:
Overheating - I've never had issues, even on a hot day. On a hot day, putting the screen brightness to 80%ish would produce a warning about overheating and restrict you from increasing it further - but I've never had the need to increase brightness that high anyway.
Battery - It did deteriorate to below a day under normal use earlier this year, but again I replaced it with a new battery and it easily lasted a day. After updating to Android 6.0, I've noticed an even stronger performance in battery life - lasts more than a day and a half of normal use now. Pretty good for a year-old phone with a quad HD display, but again you can always buy a spare battery or portable charger for those heavy users.
All in all - HIGHLY impressed with LG on this phone, which reviews will show you. Would recommend it to anyone and at £150 its an absolute steal - wipes the floor with anything you can get on the market today below £300 (bar the G4)

I have the G3, and believe me, if my SGS2 had 4G capability I'd go back to it in a heartbeat.
Various problems with the audio jack, freezes constantly, and likes to turn off mid call. Although I think I'm in the minority, as people seem to love this phone.
Pros: I really like the camera.

have you owned both? I'm interested as I'm considering both, the X Play really appeals, the only downside of the xplay I see is the inferior processor when compared to other phones I'm considering. I'm just wondering how good the processor needs to be if I'm not playing games, surely the Moto x is capable enough?

This is probably the best value phone under £150. My wife has this and loves it. I had the G2 and G4 both of which were excellent. If you can stretch to the G4 then you get a lighter phone with a better camera and smoother experience. The issues people mention are really non-issues on the whole. No phone is perfect and bang for pound this is great. With the G2 my issues were battery life (2yrs in) and of the 16GB storage only 8GB was user accessible. That was enough to hold some music and photos. The G3 and be upgraded with a 128GB memory card for £25 and battery life is now a non-issue with a spare costing £5-10. We always carry a spare around. At the end of a working day when everyone else's phones are running dry and the journey home means you have enough juice to only listen to music, we can just slip in a fully charged battery and we're back up to 100% power. Its a life saving feature and great for when on holidays. Ironically replaceable batteries and memory cards are found easily in the cheap phones but rarely in flagships. The G3 has a great camera and build quality being a former flagship. Id say all the essential problems are easily solvable on the G3 and the little niggles are livable with. For £150 if you manage your expectations you cant go wrong. Personally I'd stretch to the G4 if you can find it cheap and need a spectacular camera. I dont see any reason to ever upgrade my G4 unless it breaks. For me its as close to a perfect phone as I could want and the G3 is not that far off the mark either.

I had a G3 for about a year and it was accidentally broken in September by a friend. Could not repair so I decided to add an extra £80 or £100 and get a G4 and that's when I noticed everything that people were moaning about on the G3 ... lag, battery life literally appalling compared to the G4, screen cannot be seen in the sunlight but the G4 hasn't the same problems. I'd add a bit of money and get the G4 over the G3. I thought the G3 was the best phone I ever owned until I bought a G4.

You can't at this moment and that's why I use the past tense but still recent. You're more likely to get similar deals from chinese phones as oppose to LG, Samsung, Sony as you pay a premium for their name. Look for Huawei, Oneplus and Xiaomi.

I agree. Worth every penny at this price and I would still be using my G3 now had it not been dropped and the internals damaged beyond repair. Glad that the update has sorted the battery life out. I had a spare battery and charger to deal with that anyway. The G3 came in for a lot of criticism but it was the deals for the G3 that generated 100's of comments on this site. Plenty of haters but many more positive.
