20% off kindles at John Lewis until 25/04/2016 to celebrate World Book Night. As it's John Lewis, you'll get a 2 year guarantee as standard, so better buying here than elsewhere.

It's a step up in resolution, but the big difference is that it has a back light. If you need that, then buy the paperwhite. The voyager is better still.

Depending on how you use the Kindle. If you want to read in bed without turning the light on, or on the train/bus, then yes. Otherwise, if you're just gonna use the Kindle at your desk with a desk lamp, you can save you money and buy a previous gen.

Don't we get a 2 ywar warranty as standard anywhere on electricals in the EU anyway?
As for those wondering why on earth you would pay all the extra for the Voyage, the processor is much much faster and as such the kindle suffers zero lag when doing anything, also the build is much higher quality and you can squeeze the edges to turn pages etc, its just a better experience, and if you really are into kindles then its worth it.. the OASIS is very high priced at the moment but i'm sure that is an even better experience.

As stated on previous Kindle posts, Amazon don't want to know about problems once 1 year has passed.
My replacement Paperwhite arrived in 2 days from John Lewis, and the extra year over Amazon's warranty is worth it.

Had my Paperwhite for ~3 years now. Brilliant device. Definitely go for the Paperwhite if your budget can stretch to it - the ability to read day or night, in cars, in bed with partner without disturbing them etc. is worth the extra in my opinion!

Totally agree £40 extra is nothing for the extra flexibility. My wife and I each have one and would never go back to the old style (although I do sometimes miss the physical buttons on my really old keyboard model)

If you use the same kindle account on the new one, then all the books that you have on the old one will be available to download.
Even if you don't do it that way, you can use eBook software Calibre to store and move books around.

Note that the latest generation of Paperwhite has a slightly higher resolution than before, but this unexpectedly makes the font sizes a little smaller if you've upgraded.
And it's not a back light as with tablets, but leds that shine over the front of the screen.

Reading is better on dedicated electronic books (paper books even better). No eye fatigue, better visibility in sunlight or plain artificial light, better battery life, no distraction from color screen or apps or emails or games or facebook notifications. Just as reading is better than watching movies or eating pickled onions.
My wife has had a Kindle Keyboard for many years now, and it was replaced around the 20 month mark with no problems..
MrPuddington
23 Apr 16#23
Actually the new Paperwhite has the same resolution as the voyager, and the voyager has a reflective surface. So it is a matter of taste.
Tesco had the Paperwhite at 79.99 a while ago. I am sure prices will drop again, certainly when the next generation comes out. So you could hold off until then.

Hey, you're right! They replaced the paper white, and I didn't keep up. I'm tempted by the paper white, as my old 3G one gave up the ghost a year ago. I use an ipad as an ereader atm but it's not the same.

You want Calibre. Google it. It'll convert almost any text documents or books to kindle friendly (which is just mobi dressed up) format & transfer them to it for you as well.
Personally I still use a nook simple touch glowlight (1st gen) because I love the buttons to turn pages on both sides, meaning it's much more comfortable. Plus it only cost me £30, which is a bonus.

I like it that Amazon have gone back to puting buttons on the Kindle with the Oasis. I still use the older model from a few years ago that came with buttons as I prefer it to touch based. Does Argos take a redacted bank/card statement showing the retailer name as proof of purchase?
Kindles are fantastic but after many years I recently bought my wife the Kobo Aura H2O, if you’re considering purchasing the voyage I would certainly recommend the H2O the cost is around the same and it provides a bit more flexibility of where you can read as its waterproof.
For example if you enjoy reading in the bath.
Of course it depends if you have hundreds of books and tied into Kindle, but for those who are not its worth considering where you want to use your device

Bought 2 Kindle Paperwhites @ 8.00am Saturday via Amazon for free prime next day delivery.......7.00pm Saturday I go online see them reduced by £22 each......[turns out I got a email 9.15am saying they had been reduced in price,
Got Amazon to give me a ring back and got £44 credited to my account
I bought them because my two "rooted" Nook Glow Lights e-readers stop downloading books because Barnes Noble withdrew support for the E-readers in UK .......Anybody know of a "workaround" for that problem ....woud like to pass em on to extended family members in working condition.

Well my Nook just stopped working whilst in Tenerife last December, just went blank screen , so I just hit reboot and it reset to factory default.Wifes was still working fine. Anyway only use them when on holiday, going to Maderia next week so thought I better re root my Nook. with Root Manager
Rooted, connect to my wireless network, but I could not download the kindle app, just would not connect. So tried to down load new Kindle books I had bought on my laptop, to the wifes Nook. They showed on the Nook but hit download and it started for a second then said download interupted. So I just thought as I can down load with no problems onto both Kindles, it must be down to Barnes Noble withdrawing support. But as yours are working fine that cannot be the case.
Got to admit the Kindle App on the Nook ,very dark to see libary unless back light on but reads books fine. That said I prefered the more egnomic design, and weighted balance for a more comfortable hand hold. Plus page click buttons [reading BN offerings. Plus you can disconnect WiFi, and also switch the machine Off, rather than just going to blank screen with the Kindles , hence battery can last for months on a NOOK
Any pointers appreciated Mex5150

26 Apr 16#65
I'm assuming you also installed gaps when you routed, so the only other difference could be Amazon increased the minimum Android build with the latest version of the Kindle app (although I have it installed, I never use it, I strip the DRM nonsense and use a different reader), if this is the case, side-loading an older version will not help as Amazon have recently changed the encryption on their DRM, so older versions of the app wouldn't be able to read anything DRM'd not already stored locally from before the change. This would seem to verify that the Amazon DRM update is indeed the cause of the issue. The Nook never had support for kindle, you had to kludge it yourself after rooting. That's because the app was not designed to be used on an E-Ink device.
I had forgotten about the DRM change, this does make it a little trickier. Your options to continue using the Nooks are to sideload an old kindle apk to the one you just rooted, and stuck to books from Amazon that that aren't DRM encrypted, or get whatever you like, strip the DRM yourself, then use a better reader app anyway.
