I am not sure this is a great deal. Yes, it has a decent resolution, 16GB of flash memory, and a custom ROM. But it is limited by 1GB of RAM and being two Android generations behind. I would rather spend a little bit more and get 2GB of RAM and at least Android 5.

i have a different kindle hd. can sideload without play store . use es explorer to transfer apk. i have installed google play but sometimes get errors with Google play services and need to uninstall and downgrade so not as good as used to be . This is for kindle fire hd 8.9

After speaking to zavvi on facebook they say it has a 6 month warranty with them and 6 months with the manufacturer

I really fancy one of these, but don't like the idea of a flashed ROM that I don't know the source of.

Anyone know of a reliable source of Kindle Fire OS to flash back onto it? This You Tube video shows how to do it, but I'd rather find a trustworthy source of the ROM file.

I can put videos etc on here to entertain my toddler on a 6 hour flight right? whether it's drag and drop from my laptop or downloadable on the system itself I'm not fussed as long as I can keep the wee man entertained for the sake of other passengers!

this link seems to have stock roms. i am searching if dolby sound issues fixed on custom roms as the sound on this device is awesome and the main reason i haven't flashed it. reading about cm10 suggests dolby audio was low but no idea on newer versions!

What do you want a 7" tablet without an SD card for? It's a crappy size unless all you do is read ebooks and this one has huge bezels.

i woud say a refurbished hudl. my son has one and i have the kindle fire hd 8.9. but i don't know off hand battery life of fire 7 vs 8.9. hudl battery life is ok. kindle fire 8.9 is great

You can get the original rom directly from the amazon support page for the device. I wouldn't bother as fire os is ****. Just install the latest cyanogenmod nightly.

I am trying to find a generic leather / faux / other case for this off ebay, but there are so many kindle models I am not sure which is which.

The below link suggests it is a 4th generation kindle fire, but that is based on the Zavvi description being accurate (camera information etc.). Think I'll wait for mine to arrive before ordering a case or cover.

Indeed, I"m not convinced by the Zavvi description either. They are suggesting this device has cameras, whereas the Amazon literature hints this is not the case

That said, there are so many versions of the kindle out there, who knows what this is!

I was thinking the same thing: to me it's a bit security risk to start using a device that uses unofficial OS which is installed by who knows who - what if there's a key logger on that?

Based on research, it is the Kindlle Fire Hd 7 inch, 16GB, front and rear facing camera model. Often referred to as the '4th generation kindle' 2014.

The lack of an SD slot when on the orginal Kinle operating software was a non-issue as it comes with unlimited cloud storage for all Amazon content

However, this modl has been rooted and has alternative firmware. The upside is that this opens up the system for you to do all sorts on non-Amazon related tomfoolery - which is good

The downside, now becomes a lack of storage. However, its a 16gb system and it comes with 5gb extra cloud storage for non-Amazon stuff...

I wouldn't wish this tablet on my worst enemy.

I'm not sure what you are asking. Are you on the original rom that came with your hd 8.9?

Cyanogenmod are a trusted company when it comes to Roms, there will not be any security risks with their Roms. Oneplus used their OS for the first phone Wileyfox use their roms. They are perfectly safe but you can just reflash the stock rom if you want.

Each model is different the 8.9 may have issues which others don't. You might just need to reflash gapps to fix your issue and if you are happy with fire os stay on it. I just had a quick look and there are milestone and nightlies available for your 8.9 so I suggest you do the reading and make a decision based on that. Here are links that will help.

​yes. I have the original rom and sound is great. the forums suggest cm10 had problems with dolby sound. though more volume than technology. i never upgraded as thought the dolby was proprietary and so wouldn't be on cm roms. thanks.

i use an app called wifi file explorer pro which I got for free from amazon which allows me to open a website on my pc and send files via wifi to the tablet if on same wifi network. can also use es file explorer to bluetooth files from pc or wifi transfer from another tablet or phone. i find es file explorer tricky to access windows servers. but if you plug it into your pc via a usb cable can transfer files directly. you can sideload software onto the device via es file explorer pro too from other android devices so you could download software that would allow you to download media files from the internet should you wish

there is also a youtube ripper called tubemate on amazon app store. it works great just dont upgrade when you open it it is a spam advert

I think I'm right in saying that Zavvi have a long and dishonourable history of accepting orders for items they have no intention of supplying?

I agree that's why iv'e cancelled mine , I think if there was a problem with the tablet there would be 0% chance of zavvi actually doing anything about it and i assume as it's been flashed and a refurb from zavvi amazon themselves will be very reluctant to help also

cancelled mine today as they could not tell me when they were getting more stock,they never informed me of the delay only found out when I contacted them,they have taken hundreds of orders for this tablet knowing they had no stock,luckily paid through Paypal so they were not paid before I cancelled so no waiting 28 days to get credit card refund,beware they have a history of advertising goods they do not stock

So slower processor. Missing a camera, are they 16g ?

Mine has 12gb available storage. It is installed with a cyanogenmod rom already. Seems ok for £30ish (£35 minus 10% discount minus topcashback minus credit card cashback)

On settings model number says amazon tate. Build says Nov 2014. Memory says 783mb. An internal storage 12.31gb free.

I think reason for there being no user guide is because the user guide would have been on the basis of Amazon OS. Given that this has android OS it would have made the user guide mostly irrelevant. I'm happy with it so far.

No only one camera. Most mobile plugs fit it so that's no problem. Mine had 95% charge. Seems quite quick and responsive. I'm happy for the price it was. Looks like new.

the original fire os is out of date. some apps don't work on it eg moonlight game streaming. i now have problems with play store and youtube and so has made my fire hd 8.9 annoying to use. so cm mod just updates the software on the great hardware amazon sold at basically a loss slash breakeven for great display speakers and wifi compared to a cheap chinese knock off

play store was never supported on fireos and you had to hack it to work.

Yours has a rear camera? Not forward facing? Are you sure as there are no models with only a rear camera, it's front only or front and rear.

Yeah my mistake - forward facing. Battery seems good. It needs to be with a euro charger!

Arrived yesterday, no manual, only forward facing camera, will not connect to play store, very slow, disappointed. May send it back.

On first boot mine didn't seem to connect to the play store but if I searched for something then it found it and would download apps but the store front would not load. I rebooted it and it has been fine.

Got mine yesterday. Fired it up this morning, connected to wifi, google account. Updated play store and other apps ok, will give it a proper try later (It's for my wife anyway :smiley: )

Have received mine today. The box is a bit tatty which I expected from a refurb but the tablet itself has some scratches on the screen. I would have thought grade A means that it's good as new? Anyone else's have scratches?

Mine arrived also today, box a bit tattered. Small scratches, less than 1cm, not really a problem. Booted right up with Cyanogenmod, heh. Seems OK for the price, very basic.

Mine had quite a large scratch (don't notice it while I'm on it) so I contacted customer services. They've offered a 20% partial refund after I sent them a photo of the damage.

mine has a chip out of the corner in the plastic. hardly noticeable. Bought for sons birthday if I can get a cover for it he won't notice it.

I must of been lucky. Mine was perfect no scratches looks brand new. Touch is real quick and responsive. No problem so far

My tablet was like new too and the box was undamaged. I'm very happy with it. Its a decent tablet and I'm not going to complain for £35!!

Please can anyone help, received mine today. I cannot register it with Amazon as the serial number in Device is 0000 0000 0000 0000. I imagine it has been erased/hidden due to it being rooted maybe? Is this correct, or have I got a dud one! Tried to install google play but cannot even load es file explorer as it just keeps telling me to register my amazon account. Please can anyone help at all?

I don't understand why you are try to register with Amazon. It no longer is part of Amazon. It's been flashed to android. The only thing it asks for is a Google account
It needs you to make a Google account if you have not got one already. Then you have use of the playstore.The Google playstore is already downloaded onto the tablet. Once you sign into your Google account then the play store works perfectly. If it's not a Google account it's asking you for. Can only think yours has slipped through and has not been flashed with android.

I emailed zavvi and complained about mine being scratched and they offered a 15per cent discount- it was nowhere near as bad as this tho!

I could live with a scratched up backplate, but the broken power/sleep button makes it totally useless. I have to press very hard in a certain way by also putting pressure on the back of the tablet, and even then it does not register the push of the button 8/10 times. It's unbelievable this got a grade A stamp. I really hope they can provide me a replacement tablet.

Well, I returned my heavily damaged Kindle for a refund. I would rather had a replacement, but they have nothing left in stock they said. Luckily I get the entire €13,- returning cost back, but the real question is 'when ?' Also, I'm never trusting 'grade A' refurbs ever again.

It looks like they have some more in stock although hopefully they aren't the badly scratched ratty ones!
