seems a strange size. too big for hand luggage but too small to justify spending £50 for the extra 10l capacity over standard 50l hand luggage

Where are you getting 50L hand luggage?
I have a 44L CabinMax backpack and I don't think I've ever seen one with more capacity. It does me for 90% of trips.
I have one of these IT lightweight cases for longer trips (only used twice) and it seems OK. Not used it enough to comment on long term durability. But it is light, and so not that robust, so I wouldn't expect it last forever. Think I have a bigger version than this as it is considerably bigger than my CabinMax.

I've got one, it's holding up well, really is light.

Yes they are light, and I bought a complete set a couple of years ago. Sadly they do not hold up for the frequent flyer. I have had rips, wheels fall off and horrible bulging which causes them to scrape across the floor when you are pulling them like a bin bag on wheels. Do yourself a favour and buy a hardcase, spend a bit more and keep it for many years to come.

We have some, and they get used 2-3 times a year. Not a huge frequent flyer and yes, overfill them and they bulge, but that could be down to how you pack them.
Obviously if you cause the damage (ie the rips and wheels) by packing something sharp badly,or pulling any case over rough ground then all bets are off however if they were damaged by the airline such as as they were packed into the hold you should have reported it to the airline or there agent, as soon as you get them back off the baggage claim belt. We've had cases wrecked before by baggage handlers and the airlines always replace them, but we always check as soon as we get them back now.
If its a part failure contact the maker, worst case is they tell you no, best case is they get replace them, after all a company only as good as the customer service they offer.
You have nothing to lose by asking the maker about them...

I haven't overfilled, or packed improperly. All used within standard airline weight restrictions.
A good case won't need to be wrapped in bubble wrap to be able to handle the simplest of travel requirements.
They should be designed to take a bashing, as the luggage system in airports does not gently caress your luggage around the terminal, you will only buy these once, then learn a valuable lesson.. "You get what you pay for".

I have a pair of the cabin sized ones for trips on the low cost airlines. They get used three or four times a year, and have perhaps been on 20 to 25 holidays now. So far so good, they're holding up. However, they stay with us and don't get subjected to the rigours of the baggage handling system - tbh I'd want something more substantial for that. This case looks more like the sort of thing you see people using on airlines in America where the rules on size of hand luggage are far more relaxed.

I have 2 of the small size ones and 2 large..they really do weigh next to nothing. The small ones are great for 10kg cabin bag as i fit in enough for a holiday and just get shampoo etc in resort x

I agree to some degree, there's usually a large mark-up in most retail. Paying more can be a sign of better quality, or could be a case you are paying for a brand name. However it sounds like something has happened to your cases as fabric does not rip itself, nor do wheels break without some external force. If it wasn't something in your case, maybe someone else's case caused the damage.
I agree these are not as solid as a hard case, but they are aimed at people who want a lightweight case for a few flights a year. They are usually around half the weight of a solid shell and a lot less in price, but they are never going to be as durable as a hard case in all cases.
