The disgrace is those who claim them on prescription rather than paying 20p-50p a pack

The product will be identical in all shops, you'll get 200mg of Ibuprofen in each tablet. Its not like hot cross buns where different shops use different recipes. They will also be the identical product as the brand names that cost £2 a packet.

I think 2 packs is the most shops are legally allowed to sell in one transaction. I'm sure pound shops would happily sell them at 4 for a pound and still make money, but they have to choose between either selling them at 2 for a pound or not selling them at all. If I was stuck with a nasty headache, I'd pay a quid for 2 packs over going without!

thats the poundland way of making you think its a deal e.g. 3 x paracetamol packs only £1 yet only 19p per pack in other places.
Branded are not the same as these non branded ones - they are known as parallel imports and usually come from Poland - I know this for a fact as i used to work in a factory in the UK where they are unboxed then put into UK boxes and they are not as good - for example Pepcid PM i take are much better than the generics that doctors prescribe - Doctors contrary to popular belief dont prescribe free expensive/originals they prescribe the generics! Just phone your doctors reception and try and ask for one by name. I am talking Scotland where all prescriptions are free! Manyh of what you buy even in chemists could even be from China and many have been found to contain absolutely nothing that it says on the box and in many cases chinese imports can be extremely dangerous to your health. Even the NHS were forced to admit they hadnt a clue how many chinese clone medicines they had in their stocks in any hospital in the UK. Quite worrying!

Prescriptions for such items tend to state higher doses and quantities than is legal to sell over the counter. Now true, you could buy a couple of boxes and just take the dose it says on the script rather than the box but then that's on your head.
Also, people tend to get such things on prescription because they don't pay for their prescriptions, so it's like it's free (even though it's not). Something worse than this is the minor ailments scheme. A scheme that is to relieve the surgery of silly ailments and give out more "free" drugs that they can get for pence. I once saw a woman walk out and refuse to buy paracetamol for her small child because we were not allowed to give her anything for a potential ear infection. The child was clearly in pain but because it was not free, she left it.
What is wrong with people at all?

The problem with these fake neurofens is that you don't noe what's in them. 20p yes but u could be eating sawdust. I only buy the real thing for my family.
therealclaireh to qwerta369
2 Apr 16#55
These fake Nurofen as you call it whether they are coated, uncoated or capsules are basically Nurofen just they don't say it on the packet and cost 10 times less
grahamc2003 to qwerta369
2 Apr 162#56
Exactly which type of Nurofen do you buy for your family? I hope you ensure you get the correct one for the particular ailment. There's Nurofen Back Pain, Nurofen Period Pain, Nurofen Migraine Pain and Nurofen Tension Headache products.
Of course, they're all exactly the same, just marketed differently to command a higher price. All the same, all Ibuprofen - do as the nhs does and buy the generic product.
I'm puzzled as to how you know your nurofen isn't sawdust?, and why ibuprofen is more likely to be sawdust than the expensive nurofen you claim to buy.

Same brand as Pondland sells.....3 boxes for a pound. Found them as effective as Nurofen.

Sorry but the doctors also have budgets to adhere too,Any doctor giving out prescriptions for tablets which cost as low as 15p and for which you don't need a prescription for should be struck off.
Flora82 to rickj

should be 'struck off'? Not the most proportionate response, and rather a waste to the costs of training somebody to be a GP.
therealclaireh to rickj
2 Apr 16#48
The prescription stuff is a higher dose and quantity i've been on it and had to take something to coat the stomach lining too as ibuprofen can cause a lot of stomach damage I don't think any pharmacist would sell anyone 100 400mg ibuprofen tablets otc with out a prescription

Asda ones are similar priced and probablty the best ones out there.
not sure why this is getting voted hot.. Tesco are only 28p

I guess it's a deal, here's a couple of prices in the main supermarkets:
Sainsburys: 35p
Asda: 25p
Waitrose: 35p
So it's only a slight saving, and you (should be) limited on the number of packets you can buy at a time, so it's not like you can stock up.

Also 25p in Wilko

My point is anything over the counter is crap. A mild headache maybe, but for muscle spasm pain or any other aches you might as well fire down smarties for all the good those tablets will do.

Bit of a dumb statement seeing as you can't even get Tramadol over the counter.
70s_kid

In that case surely the real disgrace is the people who are responsible for running an NHS system where costs are not properly managed?
eslick
1 Apr 161#36
because realistically they cost us pennies in shops but the NHS much much more
70s_kid
1 Apr 16#34
Why?
Is your point that people shouldn't use prescriptions for ANY medicines that are available over the counter, or that prescriptions should only be used for expensive medicines?
grahamc2003
1 Apr 16#33
I had strong painkillers prescribed by my dentist, and boots supplied them for about £2 iirc, whereas if they were on an nhs prescripton they'd have been 8 or 9 quid. So the whole system seems to be mixed up.

?? Erm, yes that's what I'm saying...the pain relief that doctor's prescribe is not proprietary medicine. It's stronger strength/quantities that is not available over the counter.

1 Apr 162#24
Errr - and what makes them better than all the other identical ones?
eklynne
1 Apr 16#21
In general the paracetamol and ibuprofen that are precribed by doctors are higher strength/quantities used by people who require long term relief. No doctor in the UK would write a script for 16 basic strength tablets that can be purchased for 20p.
martinspoon
1 Apr 161#20
Although interestingly enough, in studies, on average, people report feeling greater pain relief from the branded ones, despite them all containing the same active ingredient. It's the placebo effect, and would appear to indicate a degree of mind over matter. Doesn't work though if you know they contain the exact same active ingredients :-)

Not the safest drug for pain control for certain people with certain complaints. and certain ages...
I had nasal polyps removed last yeah, my surgeon told me the cause was possibly ibuprofen as I took them for years to manage a bad hip I have.
