buy a used elitebook. they were £1500 new and you can find them under 200 nowadays. a 2540p i7 at >140. a G1 elitebook from 2014 4th gen i5/i7 from £230. Much better than most flimsy plastic rubbish laptops

Well I don't know about any specific ebay listing, but the 14" version of this would have been Thinkpad T420, while the 15" was called the Thinkpad T520. The 14" are far more common, as being built like tanks, the larger ones do get a bit heavy.

I bought a Dell E6420 on ebay for about £110 for my Mother, did the free windows 10 upgrade and all is good. The HDMI out is really handy. Incidentally, if you need something to speed it up a tad, pick up a cheap ssd and move the hdd over into the dvd bay with an adapter. This worked out well enough that I bought myself one and did the same

wouldnt touch with a barge pole, and that "new" battery for £10 is either going to be dodgy, or dangerous.

I picked up an x220 and one of these £10 batteries with the ebay 20% off, the laptop is great, the battery on the other hand was advertised as having 5200mah capacity but lenovo battery stats report it as having a design capacity of 4400mah and an actual capacity of 3600mah or less than 70% of that advertised.

It's 1366 x 768 for the normal non-IPS screen, not sure if the IPS variant has a higher resolution, but I would imagine it does. It outputs to 1920 x 1080 via displayport and VGA.

I have one of these which I slowly added an IPS screen, 120GB ssd, 8GB RAM and 91Wh battery.
And I think it's bloody amazing. Fast as my desktop for web browsing, document creation and related things, keyboard is one of the best membrane boards I have ever used, I love the trackpoint, it's sturdy as a rock, IPS screen looks great and battery lasts all day.
I'm one of those people who upgrades their PC way too much, and spends stupid money on making it look good but I can't see me replacing this laptop for a long time.

Ugly or not, they are tough, and parts will be available for quite a while, you cant say that about other brands, a year later, good luck finding a replacement cover panel that cracked on a Tosh or Sony.
BigYoSpeck
12 Apr 162#33
Thinkpads are tanks. They don't tend to look good value if you just go from a spec list but it's their build quality you pay for. I have a 6 year old T410 that survived travelling the world with me and all though it looks a little battleworn it works just fine.
If you want something that a kid won't easily trash, with frankly the best keyboard on any laptop then get a Thinkpad.
And it comes with 64bit version of Windows, so you can upgrade it to 16gb, on spec says up to 8gb but it supports upto 16gb but better check the lists of Ram which works on x220.

i see that this one is on offer for 160 quid. Is it value. I have a pixel chromebook which is the dogs **** but i could do with a cheap windows laptop for the few things the chroembook wont do
But do any of the Elitebooks come with 1920x1080 resolution screens?
delicatejew

They have the same resolution as this Lenovo laptop. I think the screen is fine. I have the 2540p, which has a fantastic keyboard, trackpad and superb build quality with a metal build.

These kinds of deals come up quite frequently on ebay as they are ex business machine that get sold in bulk. Often come without hdd though and sometimes have some damage to them so make sure you read the description.
I got a t400 (core 2) and installed linux on it. It has only just died after 4 years of service. Easy to upgrade, very durable.

Good spot I've purchased. I had a Lenovo for work and missed the keyboard massively currently using a HP. Desperately needed a cheap-ish relaible laptop for home, so this fits the bill.
On the tinkering front it's been a long, long time, so what's worth an upgrade...
Memory: I gather it has two slots. Easy as purchasing any additional 4gb ram? To pair with the 4gb that's already in the machine, to take it to 8gb? Does it need to brna specific type?
From what I gather max it accepts is 16gb (8gbx2)?
SSD: looks to have the option of two drives
1 x mSATA under the keyboard
1 x 2.5" bay on the side.
Never purchased or used an SSD but it seems all the rage. Worth upgrading both slots?
Any cheap SSD recommendations?
Screen: Is is that bad? As it looks like some replace the TFT LCD with IPS LCD
Any other worthy upgrades?

I bought a second hand T530 for my lads and it has stood up to abuse well, agreed it is a bit heavier but the 15" screen makes of for that. Swapped the screen from a 1366 to 1600 resolution (really easy to do) and the difference was instantly noticeable.

I have one.
I can confirm the TN screen (default) is about average - an IPS one is worth it.
I have a 120GB mSATA SSD (for Windows 10) and a 500GB HDD in mine (for data). Works a treat.
Very very solid machines. We use Lenovo at work as well (have a T450 at the moment) and they are great, people trash them, drop them, spill coffee on them etc but they just work for 3-4 years, which is the lease we (IT) get people to sign for them.

RAM, it has two slots. Not sure about types.
If you want to dual boot I'd probably go with using a SSD in the 2.5" slot and a mSATA too.

Screen is passable but poor viewing angles; not sure about the IPS [as prefitted] but I hear good things, though replacing these is semi-affordable but not super easy.
