That's an interesting point. Some people buy iPhones to help elevate their appearance in public (conspicuous consumption). If you speak to these people most of them have the cheapest base spec model with next to no storage space and consequently don't use it much. I wonder what it says that someone shells out for the latest flagship Android phone not caring about residual values. That they have even more money than the iPhone user who keeps the same phone for years because 'it just works' (even with a smashed up screen that they appear to be too impoverished to replace)? Does that make flagship Android owners more appealing to the discerning observer?

The hands-on reviews have been favourable, the S7 Edge has a slightly larger screen. I prefer more screen real estate so i'm likely to stick with going for the Edge if i can find a decent deal, though it's surprised me what HTC have done. Nothing game changing but a very favourable phone.

If you can wait a bit, I would say wait a month after release and check personal reviews as well as critical reviews. It should highlight any issues which people have.

A lot of the reviews seem puzzling, Ars Technica just completely ignored the rather low battery life and dire storage speeds in their tests, while Anandtech talked about them, but then didn't. I think a lot of news sites want HTC to keep going, so are ignoring the problems with the device.

This graph shows that if you plan to encrypt your device, look elsewhere.

And these graphs show the HTC10 having lower battery life than the LG G5 and everybody was criticising the battery life of the G5.

Everything else about the phone seems great, but I wonder why these two problem areas were glossed over.

Exactly what i was thinking too. Unless you have owned and used a HTC, you don't appreciate the small things that matter and does not exist in Samsung or LG. None of the reviews suggest that. Yes, other manufacturers have they have their own gimmicks, but not as polished as HTC. I agree, M9 was a shame for HTC. I have it and hate it now but holding for a upgrade.. I also have a G3 now and had a Samsung S6 in between too.
I am not a gamer, so cant comment on the .0001% difference in performance or 2% heating difference between phones, that matter to most reviewers.

I still love my HTC M7 that i gave on to my wife. Still going strong.

Still for HTC difficult to sell at this price against G5 and S7, as they are much established and have bigger marketing spending than HTC, If HTC want to sell they have to lower the price at least 20% compared to others, furthermore not to forget Huawei and another small Chinese company is increasing their portfolio rapidly

Nice phone and spec, good price with 10% off at least £130 cheaper than an S7 Edge.
My only concern would be battery life with that daft QHD display, they should have stuck with 1080P for better battery life.

I am seriously considering the Moto x style, bigger screen and no bloat, very good camera and certainly a lot cheaper at under £300 new. Reviews are reasonable generally.
Dazzla
12 Apr 16 1 #52
The style camera won't compare to this. The sensor in this is the same as the 6P.

Sense 8.0 has very little bloat and most hands on have praised the software.

Screen is a personal choice and you can't say much about the price.

For those complaining about the battery, 3000mah is on par with the current snapdragon 820 flagships.

Like many things, what you're really paying for it is the difference between what you pay for it and what you sell it for. If you bought this phone now for 500, keep it in good condition and keep the box, and you could probably sell it in 2 years for 250.
TechBB to smsmasters
13 Apr 16 1 #109
Well, all phones will be worth £300 or less eventually. However, it's more the speed at which phones like this will get there that I suspect you're alluding to, which I agree with.

I'm surprised none of the trolls that dominate Apple deal threads with comments like, "What a waste of money when you can buy a Vodafone Smart Ultra for £99" have made such comments as yet. I guess it shows that it's not the price people are really averse to but the brand.

To anybody who are new to the smartphone game(less than 6-7 years), IR used to be the data transfer method before Wifi or bluetooth..
Moreover i noticed yesterday that the peel app in my M9 has started showing notifications on its own and had to be stripped its privileges... so better not to have bloatware IMHO.

Seems a two horse race now for 2016's best Android phone between the M10 & the S7 unless you really like the G5's expensive "friends", it's an interesting option if you want something different than the usual iPhone/Sammy? Problem with mobile reviews generally is they go OTT with every new phone announcement, they were saying the G5 was the best when it was announced, before coming to their senses later.

Two things holding me back...
In a few months, the price will probably drop. And by then, we will be so close to a new Nexus, you would probably be better off waiting a little more for that. The Nexus will likely be the same price as a discounted htc10, and with better specs & support

solid
13 Apr 16 #110
No, that's not what I mean.
If software and value is what you want when buying a 2016 flagship, then a nexus would also be near the top of your list. Buying an S7 or G5 at the start of the year is farvaway enough from a nexus to make it worthwhile for you. However, HTC, Sony and others dont have the same kind of cachet. By the time the HTC10 becomes really compelling, you'll be so close to the nexus launch specifically, I think you'd be better off waiting for it. It'll be significantly better supported, and be a better value, as it'll probably be a similar price to the discounted HTC 10 and better specced

I am comparing the htc10 to the (admittedly unknown) 2016 nexus...
I'm not saying that "the next phone" will always better, that's not a helpful comment
OrribleHarry
13 Apr 16 #111
Ah OK, it read like you were comparing upcoming undefined phone. If you are willing to wait then that's absolutely what do, all specs will be fully known and comparable and the prices will be more competitive. Used to always be a big HTC fan until I had issues. Worst company to deal with, sent my phone off 7 times to get it fixed and each time they sent it back they still didnt fix it.

The issue was on the HTC One X, multiple dead pixels and the glass wasnt fitted properly so if you pressed it right in the middle, the screen would warp inwards and make contact with the touch-screen component.

An isolated example of a poor quality build I'm sure, but the negligence on their end and the "don't care" attitude put me off for life. If you want an android, get a Samsung. If you want a HTC, just pray nothing goes wrong with it or that their customer service team has improved in the past 2 years.

To me it looks pretty underwhelming, considering its not that different to the previous models, it also looks a bit like an iPhone 3g, it doesn't really have anything over the (never thought I'd say this about a Samsung) S7 edge (or LG G5) and it needs to sell a bucket load of these to stay afloat!

FIRST IMPRESSIONS

I went into my HTC 10 briefing thinking HTC had a lot of catching up to do, with so many awesome devices on the market. I came out won over.

The HTC 10 is a well-designed phone with a string of exciting features that I’m genuinely excited about testing out. If HTC’s lofty claims about the battery and camera turn out to be true, there’s going to be a lot to like here. It might lack the waterproof powers of the Galaxy S7, or the funky switchable modules of the G5, but its approach to fine-tuning things like audio and tackling the bloatware problem on Android could be killer features.

There’s a long way to go, but HTC could have a great phone on its hands here.

From what I read you have to format the card as internal storage to do this. Once you do the device stores everything on the sd card completely ignoring the real internal memory, which is usually faster.

If true you are sacrificing speed for space.

Performance is one thing I will never get when people mention Samsung. I mean, I really wanted an S7 Edge, but my goodness, all that power and hardware (yes the hardware is awesome) and yet Samsung simply can't get software optimisation sorted out properly. Reviews always state the "weird" UI stutter, dropped frames etc. I see it too and it makes me cringe.

To each their own of course, but I'll be going with this for the cleaner, leaner software, coupled with HTC offering a pretty swift update policy. The better more powerful DAC is a plus. The camera is pretty close to the S7/Edge too. No, the HTC 10 won't be beating the S7 in terms of pure focus speed. However, their post processing is a lot softer and leave's a lot of detail in the shot, rather than Samsung's tendency to over sharpen the hell out of everything. Totally forgot about the 24bit audio when recording videos too.

Samsung took off nearly all bloatware, you can disable the rest too, it has absolutely zero stutter and it beat the lg g5 which has the same cpu/gpuhas the m10 in the speedtest, for opening apps and browsing. I had the s5 so i know what stutter you're talking about, but its long gone with the s7 and even the s6.

Nope, like someone else said, like various people on XDA have said. Yes, they have trimmed it down from "what it was".It pales in comparison to in terms of bloat to what the recent versions of have Sense have been, more so the new Sense. It does still lag, it does still have UI stutter and dropped frames. I'm not saying Samsung haven't improved, they have but they still have a way to go.

I saw a speedtest in which the S7 Edge barely beat the G5. There is a difference between speed and smoothness. Samsung devices are typically fast when going from A to B, but the journey is a stuttering mess. The G5 isn't the most optimised device in the world either, they have a heavy skin. We'll need to see an actual speed comparison between the S7 and HTC 10.

14 Apr 16 #149
Well I don't know, Ive had the htc m7 m8 m9 z3 and lg g4, aswell as s5 s6 note 5 s7. I didnt see any noticable lagg on the s7 at all it all felt smooth and optimised. And looking wise, the s7 edge looks beautiful without a case (looks bezel-less). However since theres no tempered glass for the edge yet which is good. I would probably go for the htc 10, especially since it scored 156000 in antutu which is about 26k more than the s7 edge that im using. Im probably just gonna wait for the note 6, as im just not a big fan of sense UI, I may considerate it after I review it. We'll see

There a lot of positive reviews, and bad ones. Most seem to complain that there is nothing to complain about (wtf)

Others complain about the camera. It can take good shots, reviewers on old SW have more issues. Pocketnow received an update and have said the camera experience is much improved.

Seems like a win for those who want a fluid with amazing audio, a sturdy strong and lean software

I've ordered one, my first HTC since the disappointing HTC One mini 2 (looked great but poor build quality).

You seem to be extrapolating 'not-as-good-as' it being 'terrible' which is not what these graphs are saying at all. From reading the full reviews both on Ars/Anand and elsewhere, sure Samsung outperforms it in some areas, but the numbers and testimony show that the M10 is still a very solid high-end performer. For storage, sure Samsung does have an advantage for sure with it's NVMe storage which does make it super fast compared to it's peers (iPhone 6/s i believe also has something similar). eMMC is still good enough for now and thats what is shown here. As a user of the 6p with encryption on, it's no slouch in that department, ive yet to encounter anything significant that I can attribute to the encryption slowing it down.
galactus2013
17 Apr 16 #175
The anand battery test shows the HTC 10 matching the S7. Some seem to also be missing the point that the S7 had power saver enabled, vs the HTC 10 which had power saver disabled......

Marshmallow phones come with full disk encryption already so the performance you see in videos is how fast it is going to be regardless. Most reviewers state the S7 and HTC 10 trades blows

Still, the UM Exynos variant of the S7 is where things change. The Exynos chip is more efficient than the 820. Still, for someone who likes to root their phone, Samsung is a bit meh. Samsung pay is disabled forever and Knox is tripped.

Means that if you plan to sell the phone, you'll need to inform them that both have been tripped. A shame really. Samsung's software is awful too, probably the most powerful, stuttery phone I've seen. Goes from A to B quickly but then journey is full of dropped frames etc. Camera and display is on point though.

Debating whether to pre-order using the discount code or wait and see if Very will sell it - could potentially use their 20% discount for new customers (as per the Samsung Galaxy S7 deal). Any thoughts?
restrictive to tom1191
20 Apr 16 #180
This is my thing...Very seem to be taking their sweet time.
20% discount plus 12 months 0% is very enticing, I asked customer service basically got the standard keep an eye.

I could use Paypal credit on this (I think) but that only gives you 4 months 0% meaning its a £128 per month, yes better than £512 in one go but no where near as good as potential deal on Very.
https://www.paypal.com/uk/webapps/mpp/paypal-virtual-credit

What I think i may do is pre-order here then see If Very cary it, as iirc HTC.com you have a 14 day return window.
So providing these are sent out in Early may (which is said to be the release), may leave it boxed up for a few days and see If it appears on the website, If not I guess I'll just keep it

Thats true but even If they increased RRP by say £10 it'd still be cheaper on very than from HTC.com/
