should have charged you more for extra protein... Seriously the odd crawly one would expect from anything grown... Whatever you do don't ever get an allotment...
It shocks me how Sheeple expect every food source so sanitised these days...

We got some last weekend 2 days later they were thrown in the bin as they had gone off, this is the second time this has happened so I won't be buying them again from lidl. The fruit and veg in lidl and aldi doesn't last no where near as long as it does in the major supermarkets

The ones I got a few days ago were from Spain. They were tasteless and half of them were starting to turn - that's despite spending several minutes searching for the best looking pack. Wouldn't buy again at any price.
Aldi's strawberries are much nicer - despite also coming from Spain.

Surely it's a bit early for genuine non-forced tasty strawberries ? If you close your eyes will you even know it's a strawberry, as they usually just taste very watery now.

Bought some strawberries from Lidl today. Did not check country of origin. Washed them before eating as would all outdoor fruit, having found insects in packs from other shops/supermarkets. Tasted lovely, not watery. Best I have bought this year.

probably as its not sprayed with carcinogenic preservatives... But I guess you'd prefer that...

It might be thanks to the minimum amount of added crap, just like those I pick from my back garden.
Besides who keeps a small box of strawberries for few days? I just eat them in one go.

+1, LIDL strawberries purchased on Friday were completely mouldy and/or smooshy by Sunday. Really disappointing.
But I will add that the LIDL mangoes are absolutely delicious, and the blueberries seem to last well.

Grow your own from heritage seeds and you will never go back to the GM filth you all buy in the supermarkets
yrreb88 to adrianjowitt
7 Apr 16#17
There's no GM fruit and veg in supermarkets that I'm aware of and if there is it would be labelled as such. I don't think a commercial GM strawberry exists either.
Also which carcinogenic preservatives are you talking about? And are they found at levels that can cause a problem?

I was going to report to Lidl head office as how they keep fruit & veg which are supposed to be refrigerated out in the open. Last week when Celery was on 'Pick Of The Week' they just kept it with other items. The same with strawberry. Because of this improper storage most fruit and veg (which are supposed to be refrigerated) from Lidl and Aldi go off quickly. I never had any issues with items which they had properly refrigerated.
nitro228 to varunadas
8 Apr 16#34
What makes you think any of the items you've mentioned needs to be kept refrigerated? Celery is always at ambient temperature in supermarkets, as are strawberries. There's no reason they can't be put in a fridge but they definitely don't need to be - in fact of all fruit and veg it's only really prepackaged salad (cut leaves) that need to be refrigerated. The rest is absolutely fine at ambient temps, regardless of where you keep them at home.

Bought some that looked really good in the shop, but when I got them home, I found them mouldy.
Waste of money. Eat them in the shop, cos they wont be any good by the time you get them home.

I bought a punnet of strawbs from Lidl a couple of weeks back, they looked the part but boy were they bland, I'll pass.
You can't beat a home grown British strawberry imo but tastes subjective so each to their own.
It's all about the price on HotUK not taste ...so, voting hot

It's absolutely amazing how many unsubstantiated reports of how bad Lidl and Aldi products are on any of their deal threads that are posted.
I have been using both companies for years and have never had anything but praise for their no nonsense approach and product quality unlike Asda and Morrison’s both of which I try to avoid unless going for branded products. Sometimes the multi-buy items are to good to miss.

I recall that broccoli from spain when it was checked a few years ago had levels of certain chemicals above what we permit in the UK. But generally i would wash broccoli very well as u can see some residue run off in the water when u rinse it. Strawberries i would rinse well as they are among the dirty dozen of produce with the most pesticides.

Also there is no horse meat in Tesco burgers since they're not labelled as such.
As for the perfectly safe preservatives I'd like to remind you that the same scientific community used to tell us that it's absolutely fine to build your house with asbestos and 8 out of 10 doctors smoked Marlboro cigarettes for their health benefits.
So yeah, there's that.
soldierboy001
8 Apr 16#32
So are apples, peaches and nectarines, but these are washed before distribution like all fruit, and most of the other stuff on the list is usually washed before consumption, along with this stupid bit of information we don't have outbreaks of food poisoning every year from people consuming these products.

Much as I like Aldi I just will not buy strawberries expect if farmed locally, preferably still warm from the sun on them. They should be a treat, best eaten extremely fresh, not shipped over from who knows where.

Sogaaddict to codge
8 Apr 16#39
Not a legal requirement. I rarely have fruit or vegetables which can be called "inedible" - Aldi/Lidl are no better or worse than any other retailer, including the majors. It's just another case of Aldi/Lidl bashing.

8 Apr 16#41
There is a date on them - it's just coded. Someone on here once said it's the week number (01-52) followed by the day (1-7).
I just pick the fruit which has the highest number as being the freshest. Quite often Lidl put the newer stuff on top of the older produce.

As someone who shops in ALL the supermarkets (luckily we have all in short distance) you will find virtually all strawberries are now of the variety where the stalk is like some solid mass, hard to remove. Years ago, strawberry (BRITISH) stalks used to virtually pull out with no effort. WTF have they done to them? I've tried all, inc M&S (expensive), Waitrose (expensive - 375 gm just like the Lidl ones are 2 quid!!! - Lidl is 500gms for 89p. Someone is ripping off here!). Sainsburys are the same strawberries too. Doesn't matter if from Spain or UK ...WHY are they not like the 'old' sweet juicy strawberries? Is it GM? Nothing would surprise me. Money to be made, business will make it at your expense.
Anyhow, I'll still be buying the Lidl ones tomorrow. They won't go mouldy, they won't last long enough! Plus, check them before you buy.
Think I'll be growing my own again, really don't like this new strain of strawberry. I'll eat them, but they are NOT in the same class of old.

I've never seen a best before date on an apple so why are people worried about a best before date on a strawberry, as others have said they don't last long enough to go rotten, unless you listen to those rotten liars.

You seem to have missed the point...
Most Lidl stores have 2-3 of deliveries of fruit + veg a week. I would rather pick the most recent stock than one that has been sitting on the shelf for 3+ days.
In theory at least, it should be fresher and last longer.
