If you can get enough credit to pay for a text then yes.

O2 sims work better for this as they can use lend us a quid.

Saw these in Sainsburys, they had an expiry date of Aug 16, does this mean all £5 credit needs to be used by then?

You need to make at least two chargeable actions every 120 days to keep the SIM and credit live. As long as you do this they do not expire

As I understand it is that google play allows you to use credit that's accredited to the phone number to pay for items not sure on if you can use it to pay for things and use on a normal google account though.

I have a £10 unused ee SIM since about a year ago. Does that mean it has lost its value now because of the 120 days expiry time period you mention? Tia

Unfortunately yes, as there is only a finite amount of telephone numbers networks re-use what are classed as dead numbers.

Correction to my last comment

6.3 You must make a Connection Action at least once every 180 days. If You do not, Your SIM Card w ill be
disconnected from the Netw ork and You w ill not be able to use the Services. You will lose Your mobile phone number
and any Credit on Your Account at the time of such disconnection will be forfeited.
