Starbucks are doing a 2 month trial offering customers a 50p discount if they bring their own mug/container. If popular it could become permanent.
It's seen as a way of reducing the number of disposable cups that end up on landfill.
The Starbucks near us have their own refillable mugs on sale for a £1 so just 2 users and it pays for itself!! Not applicable on £1 filter coffees.. Previous discount was 25p. Starts 1st April.
I've told you a million times, don't exaggerate !!

Panama papers, etc will hopefully start a positive global change. The wealthiest corporations, individuals and criminals should not avoid tax and/or launder money on a huge scale. It's a massive hole in every governments income, yet they all allow it. Politicians don't want to admit that they, people they know and people who donate to their party benefit from avoiding tax.
When governments allow tax avoidance, corruption and keep spending you end up with Greece.

It's widely known that Starbucks use tax avoidance strategies to avoid paying tax in this country unlike Costa who fully disclose how much tax they pay. Coupled with the fact they tend not to pay or treat their employees well. Perhaps you should educate yourself before telling others to do likewise.

We are not healthy for living longer, full stop. Our environment as a whole, not just coffee, affects our bodies. Going out in the sun damages our skin. Swimming in chlorine cleaned pools does the same, even in seawater causes damage. Every item of food we eat can cause internal problems. Of course the chance of getting cancer increases the older we get. Our bodies wear out too, some faster than others. Your comment is immaterial.

Whilst I rather detest starbucks for semi-political 'anti-usa and their subtle hidden agenda in Hollywood films etc' reasons, I do like Costa and Caffe Nero which are both British owned, and also serve pleasant coffee in a nice atmosphere.
The problem with local independent shops is that when away from home, the chains provide a known experience, and there are a number of awful small cafes as well as good ones, so unless I'm sure of the quality of the coffee and ability of the barista, I'd rather stick to a chain until back home.
We have only one decent small coffee shop where I live, two reasonable if stuck, and three awful ones, so not so good for coffee loving tourists.

There is a simple and more permanant solution that can apply to every fast drink/food venue. Starbucks Serves you coffee as normal in a real mug. Starbucks wont let you leave the venue with their mug unless you transfer it to one of these before leaving or you have to pay for the mug they gave you. The only exception to what can leave should be water because people need it to survive but should cost 50p more if you don't (eat in) or transfer it to your canteen. SOLVED

Agreed. It's pretty damn disgusting really given how often people wash their hands even after a visit to the toilets. To Starbucks' credit though, hmm, can't think of anything apart from having enough caffeine in your drink so you get it out of your system quicker. I believe in the law of infinite solubility though :stuck_out_tongue:

I suppose you have a choice, deal with a bit of potential bacteria (which your body is designed to deal with) from a cup/person that sat there before - it gets cleaned) or deal with contaminating the water you drink, by contaminated landfill seepage into water supplies. Those landfilled disposable cups have to go somewhere (and that somewhere sits on a water table of a water source, that you and I drink).
Haven't read any reports yet of people dying from the re-use of Plastic bags at checkouts in supermarkets yet. The Daily Mail must have missed that one, considering how long Wales has had that measure in force.

every single coffee i've ever has from a chain (especially costa... they are the worst by far) has been AWFUL burnt milk, terrible foam etc. i always put this down to the fact that they are usually busy and they simply can't and don't put as much time and care into making the coffee as an independent, less busy place would. i only drink from chains if i'm desperate like at motorway service stations.

Totally agree with you, a few months back we visited a small seaside town, decided to stop at what looked like a quaint little café for a coffee and bacon sandwich. The coffee had pools of grease floating on the top and the bacon sandwich consisted of really fatty bacon in cheap economy bread, even the tomato sauce tasted like vinegar. As you say with the larger chains quality/standards are normally fairly consistent around the country , I'll stick to them in future when away from home.
