Cat Mate Microchip Cat Flap keeps out unwanted feline visitors. Has been out a while now and is getting generally good reviews. I had a Cat Mate Electromagnetic but this fitted the same hole. Best price elsewhere is Pet Planet at £54.

What if another cat chases your cat and is right behind, will the flap close in time to decapitate the other cat?
What's to stop other cats learning the microchip code, making an identical chip and gaining access that way? Seems paw print identification and meow sound recognition is needed.

these are great... but when another cat tries and fails to get in, my cat go to investigate which then unlocks the cat flap!!!

I didn't know these existed, what a great idea, but now you have to lose the whole cat not just the magnet.

But they physically don't read the chip from the inside. They lock from outside to inside and the chip scanner faces out. These are perfect for keeping other cats out and it's almost certain other cats use your cat-flap at night and/or when the house is empty in the day.

Fantastic cat flap had the older version for years. Paid £80 and never regretted it

No decapitation but cat #2 gets a good bum sniff and if it tried following my puss into out hiuse6 my Jack Russell would bash cat #2 as she objects to anyone trying to hurt her mate.

I had to put an anti cloning collar on my cat to stop the other cats cloning my cats chip. It's actually quite easy for them to clone the details. They set up fake electronic doors around the neighbourhood and put chicken on the other side. A few days later...BAM.. They're in your house peeing on your sofa.

The customer service and warranty on these is very good, they never argue about sending replacements, 3 years later!!!

Does it support two cats? Is it battery operated? How long do they last and what happens if they run out? Lol

Battery last about a year from our experience, might not last as long if you have a very indecisive cat. When the battery is low the red light flashes...if it runs right out it defaults to unlocked. The light flashes for a couple of weeks before the batteries die so you get a reasonable amount of notice...as long as you know what the flashing light means, we didn't so only worked it out when it went flat and the cat's appitite apparently increased dramatically while we fed half the cats in the street.

It will register up to 30 cats. Batteries last 6-12 months. I have four cats and the batteries last about 9 months.

I'm not sure how that helps and presumably you have to catch the cat first to be able to do this...

they support something like 50 different chips/cats. I believe there is a low battery warning led.
I've had one for about 6 months, it's very good.

I have the one above this, which has a timer on as well. Absolutely brill, really given us some comfort that our cat is 'stuck' in the house after a certain time.

If the wind has a microchip that opens the lock then yes it will flap about.

How can it open when it should be locked?

From our experience this one is much better than the magnet release ones we had before. It is also pretty quiet as well when it swings shut after the cat has come in / out.

We got one of these. The neighbors cats worked out that they could get in if they went though immediately after our cats did. So we found that it was much more effective when we set it to open outwards only. Our cats soon learned to pull the flat open when outside and get in, and the other cats couldn't.

Not bad, Until only when the cat brings a mouse inside

I imagine the cat pokes its head through the door far enough for the unit to be actiavated and to unlock it. Really, you should get your cat to read the instructions (which, by the way, are easy to find for those asking the same questions that are always asked when these things come up...)

Haha - but seriously, it would depend on wind direction. It won't be able to blow inwards but it's only the magnetic door surround that prevents it from blowing outwards. You might want to think about draught-proofing your house though if enough air can get in or out by other routes to allow this to happen.

If the wind is inside my house blowing the catflap outwards then I'd start to worry.

10 Apr 16#25
Yes  but joking aside, the air going through the cat flap has to come from somewhere and go somewhere; it either comes though the cat flap from outside and leaves via draughty windows etc on the other side of the house, or comes in through said draughty windows and blows out of the cat flap.

Good price. I paid £80 about 3 years ago. And to stop having chewed up mice being left I just lock the cat flap at night, but you can buy them with timers too.

I would love to get one of these for my cat but I really don't want to deal with dead rats and birds to cleanup or discover hidden away. We control our cat's access in and out the house. If he looks like he may have a catch, he has to leave it outside. he has never done that, but it's better to control his access to avoid rotting carcasses hidden in your house.

Cheaper solution, don't get a cat.

Nobody said it was locked - we're talking about a mechanical cat flap here I presume.

if the cat isnt near it, then its locked so the wind shouldnt blow it open.

11 Apr 16#34
You are right that it would not be able to blow inwards. However, it might still be able to blow outwards as there is no catch to prevent this; only the magnetic strip - assuming it's like the one I've got.

My can pick the lock on all of these. Never found one that she cant get out of even when its locked both ways.
