BT's mid fibre offering has increased in speed from 38Mb to 52Mb. They're not going to make any effort to let you know if you're currently paying for 38Mb, but you can upgrade for free. New customers no longer get the 38Mb option. Caveat: you will have to promise them your soul for another 18 months.

I have been supplied by every broadband provider available in my area, talk talk, sky, plusnet, virgin, be there, orange, o2, the list goes on. Today, they are all the same, just different adverts. If you need customer service sometimes you get a great member of staff, sometimes you don't, the service you get depends more on you, what you know, asking the right people the right questions and how you act. Doesn't matter how much you pay or who you are with, literally no difference whatsoever. With bt infinity now and it's great and the hub 5 is solid with good wifi range. Bt fibre is not fibre to your door so you don't have to change anything in your house if you are moving from normal broadband over your phone line.

It's BT, the idea of updating your speed for free gives them cold sweats at night time. Actually giving you your quoted speed bad enough to make them cry.

I wish they would concentrate on improving the speed for the remoter parts of the UK, rather than just give upgrades to the people who already have good and reliable speeds, all the millions they've had in handouts to improve speeds in rural areas and the best I can get is 1.5mb and that's not even stable.

All these people complaining about "only" getting 50mb from 72mb broadband, while I'm sitting at home getting 4mb tops with 0.7 upload and thats the "best" they can do in my area despite being 5mins from town :disappointed:

I spoke with a decent enough english chap on the phone on the way home on Tuesday, he gave me the upgrade maintaining my decent existing offers but had to sign up for a 12 month contract. Didn't bother me as only 6 weeks into this one.

I only found out from the openreach engineer when they fitted it. He said something about only Chester South and somewhere down in Cornwall was getting FTTP as standard, as some sort of test roll out, but I don't know how accurate that is.

Interestingly it means that the fibre broadband doesn't use the phone line at all now, but we still have to pay line rental for a phone that we probably only use once a month. I'm guessing if they let us not have the line rental then they would just increase the fibre cost by the same amount!

I was also told that one way to figure out if you will be given FTTP is if you go on their postcode and line checker thing on the site - if it comes back and says "you could get up to 76Mb/s" then that means it'll be fibre to the cabinet, and if it comes back (as mine did) with "you could get up to 300Mb/s" then it'll be fibre to the premises.

We didn't opt for the 300Mb version because that was 50 a month plus line rental, so didn't seem worth it, but they upgraded the line anyway (perhaps the old copper line was old and crap), even though we only opted for the 38 (or 52) Mb version, future proofs the house a bit anyway, for the day when everyone is on 300Mb as standard

Is there anywhere to get more information about and what areas will be done in regards to FTTP

Have just seen it confirmed as a free upgrade for all existing 38Mb fubre customers (mentioned on BT's own site):

http://home.bt.com/tech-gadgets/internet/faster-speeds-and-500gb-free-cloud-storage-discover-why-bt-broadband-is-getting-even-better-for-many-customers-11364056159626

"And if you are an existing BT Infinity 1 or Unlimited BT Infinity 1 customer, BT has started upgrading lines that will support the higher speed, so you don’t have to do anything to enjoy the speed increase. BT will let you know when it’s done."

Openreach installed our Infinity connection this morning.
They also installed a fibre cable all the way to the house so it's FTTP rather than just to the cabinet, without asking!

(Because Chester South is one of the test zones or something!)

I'm on the £10pm unlimited Infinity 1 (38Mbps), signed up end of January.
Checked my Line Status on my Hub and it's showing 58.22Mbps down and 19.53Mbps up, so looks like I've been upgraded for free without having to get in touch with them.
Starting noticing the extra speed last week but only just check the Home Hub to confirm now.

We're on a discounted rate of £10/month for Infinity 1 (38mbps) having only signed up to BT a few days before the new speed increase came in. Spoke to BT, then recontracted us for 12months and put us on the 52mbps speed, which has now activated (getting 51.50mbps). Keeping us on our original discount from when we originally signed up which runs out two weeks from the end of the new contract. Sorted !

Currently with Virgin and to be honest it's crap. Was sold 200mbs and getting no where near. Last few nights have been as low as 1-2mbs and 5-6mbs, Not happy as being charged for 200mbs with a little credit when they remember to do it. Apart from this week its been around 70-80mbs max.
Was on Sky before yes not as fast advertised but rock solid.
Contract due to end in October so was thinking about BT Infinity and PlusNet as Im in Sheffield.
The BT deal does look good and only 12 months instead of 18 months with PlusNet.
Think I can get BT sport for £5.00 through my sky box as well but don't think its HD which is a shame.
Going to keep a close eye on BT deals and hopefully get a bargain when ready as Virgin is poor

24 Apr 16 #185
Someone on BT forums is stating there is no automatic upgrade or deal for existing cutomers. You basically have to phone them and see what offer they can give you. Vague to say the least.

Presumably the people paying £25 per month would just ring up to negotiate a new contract, which could in theory be less money. If you're already on a discounted deal then you'd need to ring up to negotiate a new 12 month contract which is likely to cost more than your current deal .....anything up to £25.

24 Apr 16 #183
Having only just contracted for the Infinity 1 @ £10 a month, re-contracting is no biggy for us, but obviously I don't want to pay an extra £15 a month at this stage for the 52mbps. If I can get the upgrade great, but if not I'll just consider options in 11 months.
Coreydeals
24 Apr 16 #182
I'll agree with you there. I'm getting mixed messages over this. Twitter team seem to indicate you need to re-contract, not no indication of with or without discounts. That link seems to indicate you'll be able to and keep discounts, and then over the phone I've been told it'll change at its own accord to the higher speed with no need to re-contract. A wild goose chase right here. I'll just wait until I'm due to renew which is in the coming months and see from there. Just really not helpful for people who have only just started their contracts or are midway through.
STUkrugen
24 Apr 16 #181
From the BT Community, just what some people have been told when ringing up BT to enquire. The link you posted is interesting. Truth be told, it's incredibly vague and BT are doing nothing to clarify for those on existing contracts and introductory offers.
Coreydeals
24 Apr 16 #180
Where did you hear this? From what I've read on BT, if you were to upgrade the contract the discounts should move over to it as well:

24 Apr 16 #179
I'm hearing now that existing customers have to re-contract, but if you are currently on an introductory offer (like we are, having just signed up for 38mbs Infinity 1 only a few weeks ago for £10/month) you will lose that offer and pay the full £25 per month for the next 12 months. Oh well
Coreydeals
24 Apr 16 1 #178
That's what I was told on the phone when I was going to recontract, but the advisor I spoke to said that it will be increased for existing customers too, so no need to recontract until I'm due to renew.

23 Apr 16 #171
Ouch, it's insulting in this day and age that 4G mobile offers faster internet than most people get in this country. The FCC changed the broadband threshold to 25mbit which is a far cry from what most people get. I think they should clamp down on the term broadband to only apply to speeds over 25mbit and force a minimum price on anything below that speed.
I can remember getting 512kbit in the early 2000s which was lightning fast for the time but 2mbit in 2016 is terrible. I still don't understand why telephones are still analogue and not digital with improved audio. I've heard of HD Voice that increases the bandwidth to give a range of 50Hz to 7kHz which is a lot better than what you get with a phone line. I can only guess that bandwidth costs money and most telecoms are greedy and won't want to give that extra bandwidth up.

With adsl yes, with fibre no. it's ALL the same equipment with fibre, no oversubscribed LLU in the exchange. the only equipment that changes when you switch isp is the router/modem. isp can't even reset your profile with fibre, OpenReach control DLM and only an engineer visit can reset it.

different cabinets are made by different companies, e.g broadcom, Huawei etc.
some modem chipsets work better with some cabinets than with others. your connection stats tell you who your local cabinet is made by. my FTTC cabinet is made by Huawei, and my line is 100% stable with a Huawei modem. My Asus modem on the other hand has a broadcom chipset which causes a lot of CRC Errors, and has problems with G.INP.

again though, connection sync speed with FTTC is the same with any isp on a comparable package. only routing to specific I.p's may differ.
Gregalach
23 Apr 16 #168
Being able to see the exchange from your house is no bonus if, like me, you have an EO (Exchange Only) line
I'm not connected through the local green box so cannot get FTTC
Been told that I will have to wait some months to get Infinity-type speeds
Plus point for the EO line is that I manage 2mbps over the local copper average

She stated that i was already on a 42 Mb connection on Infinity 1 which is incorrect as infinity 1 has always previously capped at 38 Mb. She also said i had been with BT for 4 months even though i have had fibre for over 3 years!

That's simply not true. You omitted to mention blocked websites and oversubscription that some ISP's suffer from....

Try ZEN for example, small enough to care about customers but large enough to be professional

Yes, cancel everything which was one of the comments on one of these many pages. So, as he recommended if you want to keep the number, that method is best avoided.

I really like the sound of this. Has anyone else done this ? - Does ending the contract and immediately signing back up really constitute a 'new customer' ? - Other providers TalkTalk, Sky insist on 12 months gap between allowing you back as a 'new customer'.

22 Apr 16 #151
This mentioned in an earlier comment seems to answer this in part: http://www.choose.net/media/guide/faqs/new-existing-customer-deals.html

With Sky counting you as a new customer after 12 months as you're aware. With BT it says you count as a new customer if you cancel everything and start again, which would be what happymanuk is doing to keep doing the BT deals year on year.

BT provide pretty good quality and value for money services BUT ... if you have any issues, their 'customer support' is an absolute joke when it comes to getting them resolved.

You'll spend hours on the phone with L1 support going through a script read out by an operator somewhere in India, before they finally figure that the script doesn't cover the problem. From that point onwards, it's a crapshoot as to whether or not you get forwarded to someone in the UK who can actually fix it or you get spun some BS excuse that they seem to pick randomly from a hat.
Bisham to GreatBallsofFire
22 Apr 16 #147
Exactly my experience with BT to date.
Phone/Infinity 1/UHD TV box all installed on Monday, and all working when 'installer' left, apart from old phone number.
Speedtest.net showed BB running at 50mb down and 20mb up, so was pleased with that too.
Our old phone number wasn't ported from Virgin to BT until next day (no biggy as we hardly use it..) but since that was done we have no BB connection ! (orange light instead of blue on the home hub).
As GBOF says above, despite being on phone all week trying to get this sorted with BT (UK staff were as clueless as the Asian 'helpdesk' tbh..) we're left with no BB, and the BT TV box is useless as most decent channels (read BT sport..) use the BB connection. The best they could do is book another 'engineer' visit for Monday, so another days holiday wasted.
Their prices might be competitive with package deals but be prepared to fight some battles if anything goes wrong.

I'm struggling to find it online, but from what I remember they offer an infinity 3 and an infinity 4, but both require FTTP, rather than FTTC which 1 and 2 use. Out in the villages you are stuck with a choice BT or the Post office and the speed is akin to 2 tin cans and a bit of string.
BT also have a habit of sharing new customers on a line rather than lay a new bit of cable causing problems.
Also never turn your router off as the software thinks there is a fault and slows you down , until eventually you get nothing.
If your speed slows , when you get through to India, tell them to forget the script, there is nothing wrong with box on the wall or your computer , ask for a line check and a speed test.
Then ask what the "profile" is set for in the exchange. 9 times out of 10 your profile has been set to a lower speed and needs resetting.

Told them on 3 seperate occasions i wanted to keep my phone and broadband, still cut me off. Was then told i had to have a new contract even though the disconnection was their fault. Sent an engineer round to connect me after a week and a half, he turned up said the number didnt match the address and just left.Gave them nearly 2 weks to re-connect and after that went to sky. Thet are still trying to charge me for a broadband service they didnt manage to provide. I had this problem once and write to the CEO. the executive complaints team got back to me (as expected) and did a thorough check. the guy acknowledged that over the past few months I've been getting low speeds and credited my account for the past few months and the next few months too as work on the cable was ongoing. other point to note is that virginmedia speed guarantee is based on wired connection not wireless.

I upgraded to the 52mb speed yesterday. Only because they offered it to me for £10.85/mth instead of the £12.50 I was paying previously. Just had to sign up for 12mths again. Which wasn't to much of an issue as I had only been with them for 5mths of my 12mth Contract. They activated it within about 5hrs. Great service IMHO

I was on the 76 mb package for 4 years ish half way threw my speed went down slowly over the course of 3 months too 52 when the engineer came out it went back too 76 (with the engineer calling it a perfect line) this happened 3 times over the course of the next year it kept happening and eventually i gave up and accepted the new speed (bt thought 52 was acceptable for some reason) so when my contract ended i switched too sky and for the 8 month's it has been rock solid 69 mb now that's still not what i got oringally but a dam sight better then the 52 i was getting (openreach made no physical changes at my end and i rather doubt i switched on a day they upped my local exchange so i was 100% being capped by bt and they were stealing 17mb from me).

I find it very amusing now that the lower cheaper package gives the same internet that i used to get from bt meanwhile they have not even changed the higher packages speed.

Feel your pain. Moved into a new build 18 months ago, was without any internet for 3 months due to phone line issues, then a further 9 months with only 2mb internet until fibre cabinet was installed. Couldn't really use netflix/amazon prime or play PS4 online. Even basic web browsing was intermittent. You don't realise how much you rely on the internet until you don't have it or its too slow to be usable.

Jeeeez, dont moan guys..... Ive been stuck on a 5mbps connection since i moved house :disappointed:
Its the worst i ever experienced and i was using dial up back in the day!
I keep checking for fibre availability and the openreach website says that fibre is available where i live i just have to wait till they add more spaces at the exchange?
I even emailed openreach to see how long it would take and basically the reply was blah blah dont know how long but we worth closely with councils to provide more fibre......left me deflated and unsure of how i can pressure them or who i can talk to about it :disappointed: 5mbps sucks especially for the xbox one it takes me a full 30+ hours to download a 45Gig game And it regularly drops connection :disappointed:

Just went onto online chat to ask about the speed upgrade (I'm on 38mb at the moment), was told it will be automatically upgraded but no set date as yet, possibly end of May. No need to sign a new contract apparently. For me the 52mb is perfect as my max speed is about 55mb, so it never seemed worth the extra for the upto 72mb bundle over 38mb. This is right at the sweetspot for my line

Ive been with BT for 9 years, never had a problem, been on the top infinity package, 3 years.

I invest in a very good WiFi router every 3 or 4 years and bin the BT one, Change the WiFi channel to No 13 (as no-one else uses that near me) also paid the engineer to extend the cabling into the center of my house next to a convenient mains socket to place the router properly. Maybe thats why I dont get problems?

best channels to use are 1, 6 or 11. all the other channels are overlapping. if you have an android phone run WiFi analyser and it'll show you the WiFi congestion round about you. most isp routers will use channel 1 or 6. if 11 is empty use that. the app shows you in real time how different signals on different channels overlap

Yeah, my best option on BT or anyone else using their phone lines would be their ADSL service, ie probably in 2-8Mb range.
Would be nice to have competition for them, but at least VirginMedia are in my area. I'm on their 200Mb service, but actually get about 200-208Mb (Steam downloads caps it out at 25-26MB/s). Just a shame the 200Mb service only includes 12Mb upload speed :/ But I feel foolish complaining when some areas of the UK are still on Dial-Up...

I wish they would concentrate on improving the speed for the remoter parts of the UK, rather than just give upgrades to the people who already have good and reliable speeds, all the millions they've had in handouts to improve speeds in rural areas and the best I can get is 1.5mb and that's not even stable.
thezoidberg to Dyslexic_Dog
16 Apr 16 2 #36
I get decent enough speeds but having suffered many years with rural broadband I cannot agree more with this.

If latency isn't a killer for you then you might try satellite as you'll most likely be able to get 20mb but with rtt times of 800ms it still feels slow (and is expensive)

I fail to see any legitimate reason for a home user needing 200mb download. I've worked for companies that struggle to saturate a 100mb link and that's with site to site file and database replication going on.

Personally I would give half of my downstream away if I could get it back as upstream ☺
andymagic to Dyslexic_Dog
16 Apr 16 1 #52
I've just been through this myself having recently moved to a rural location, but managed to bump my download speed from an unstable 1.8mbps to a stable 5.7mbps.

I bought an 'ADSL Nation' filtered faceplate for the master socket (no other sockets in house) a cheap but decent quality RJ11 cable and a Billion 7800N router.

It took a while to see the extra speed and stability as the exchange had settled on 1.8mbps having 'trained' with an utterly hopeless BT home hub, according to the line statistics we're 3.5km from the cabinet.

Here's a link to a site I used - http://www.increasebroadbandspeed.co.uk/graph-ADSL-speed-versus-line-loss-distance

I've always had Sky broadband / fibre. Always good quality, no slow downs or disconnects. Last year I made the grave mistake of switching to BT fibre, as they had a cheap deal on. Awful quality service. Slow downs and disconnects at least 2-3 times a day. Watching Netflix on the TV and part way through the movie freezes.. look on the router - the internet's gone down again. BT tech support are useless and say that up to 5 disconnects a day are deemed normal (er, what?!) so there's no fault.

Try to cancel before your contract's up and they charge you early termination charges (which is fine) but they also charge £65 for the router (the awful quality router), plus further fees for the TV box if you had that (even though it's free, and not even used). If you offer to send this equipment back to them they're not interest, they don't want it, they just want to charge you.

BT are a truly awful, awful company. Now I'm back with Sky fibre. No slowdowns, no disconnects, just consistent quality connection. I'll never, ever go back to BT. Not if it's free, not even if they paid me.

Sorry, I meant exchange, not cabinet.
The issue most definitely wasn't internal as I'd tried the Homeheap directly in the test socket for a week (and the bell wire was already removed) and nothing else connected (no extensions or other cable; wiring went telegraph pole > NTE5 socket > Router) I also tried with a BT 2700HGV which apparently had a decent chipset on the ADSL side, again for a week connected directly to the test socket.

The Billion router apparently uses the same chipset as exchange and you can tweak the SNR, so I bought one of those and fitted it (left the SNR alone as I wanted the exchange to retrain) and got the 1.8mbps up to 5.8 after about a week.

Also got told that BT only have a limited amount of Fibre connections in each cabinet
..so if others got there first it's tough.

It makes me all the more frustrated because literally my next door neighbour is hooked up to Sky Fibre 32mb with no issues.

If your on ADSL/ADSL2+ it doesn't depend on distance from the cabinet, its distance from the exchange, your issue was internal to get such a speed jump which the faceplate solved.

Its still worth doing though, but if its distance only that's the issue and not stability then you wont get that sort of increase.

So many things can effect fibre bb. If your line is from a pole and a grey cable (drop wire 6) that's shocking for fibre. Make sure your router is on your master socket preferably with no extensions. Openreach filters work better than micro filters.
Working for most service providers nobody stands out better than others. No matter who you go with (except Virgin) everything is exactly the same except equipment on each end.

Hopefully we will see the £10 a month offer again with £100 pound pre paid card for their totally unlimited service.

This is something that openreach are offering to all ISP's so you should start to see this elsewhere in the near future.

FYI - This is (FTTC) "fibre to the cabinet", and you need to be close to the cabinet to get the best speeds, below gives you the general idea, but it doesn't take into consideration the line condition from home to cabinet. Your router also needs to be in the main socket unless your extension is cat 5 or higher.

If you check below it will give you an estimate of your speeds, it will also give you your cabinet number, I found mine on google street view and did a distance check on google maps.

Thanks, will try. Their support just gives me a text book answer and doesn't answer the questions I ask.

It's the cabinet, not the exchange in the case of infinity.

Would be a bit of a con if we have to and get tied into a new contract and also potentially lose any discounts we may have.

Been with BT for 3+ years on Infinity 2, always getting 76mbps up and 20mbps down. Never had any problems except when our router just stopped working. However this was swiftly dealt with and we received a new router within a couple of days.

Can you see the exchange from your house ?

Quite funny seeing people complain about 50mb speeds.. Getting 3mb, paying for 20odd like most people around here. UK infrastructure is that of a third world.

I think we shall. I just went on their twitter and I found one of the comments from them said we need to recontract to be able to, but it seems like someone on the phone team is saying the opposite. Definitely a waiting game.
blinx01
16 Apr 16 #29
Oh great. I guess we shall play the waiting game then. Cheers.

Will this upgrade automatically?
I got the 38Mb BT Infinity 1 unlimited package on a offer for £10 per month in January, but if I upgrade on the site it wants me to pay £25.
Coreydeals to blinx01
16 Apr 16 #28
Comment 14 seems to answer your question. It seems they should update it automatically to the higher speed in the next few weeks. Of course, we shall wait and see.

I have to admit to being one of the few rare folks who have never had a problem with BT......since updating to a decent router. The one they provide is horrible (disconnecting every other day etc/poor wireless range/performance) - since buying an ASUS router, it has been bullet-proof for me. 4 months since my last disconnection and constant performance. You shouldn't *have* to buy an expensive router, but it shows you that they do themselves no favours with the horrible equipment they provide.

I too have never had a problem with BT in 2.5years since moving house to an area not covered by Virgin. I was with Virgin/Telewest since they first brought out their first broadband and was thinking all doom and gloom about moving to ADSL but glad I switched as got sick of the throttling Virgin were doing which BT don't do. My BT Homehub 5 has disconnected maybe 3 times in that time. Great service I have to say so happy for speed increase even though won't really notice it. hothot.
davelfc
16 Apr 16 #24
You are classed as a new customer as long as you leave ALL of their services, that's from BT by the way.. I give them my notice and then sign up (different email log in obviously) and arrange connection a day or two later. I even managed to do this when they changed the prices and I was able to leave for free, with no disconnection or equipment charges.

BT are terrible I would rather pay a bit more for a company who provide customer service.
dannyb77
16 Apr 16 14 #14
Just been on the phone with bt, it will apparently update automatically over next few weeks and there's no new contact commitment, its just a 'free' upgrade. No doubt I'll have to ring back when it doesn't happen.
garryallen
16 Apr 16 #10
I don't understand this. So if you don't sign up for another 18 months they will cap your speed to the current 38Mb speed? So in effect they will still have 3 different tiers? Why not just open the pipe to everyone on the lower speed option? Odd.
kester76 to garryallen
16 Apr 16 24 #12
It's BT, the idea of updating your speed for free gives them cold sweats at night time. Actually giving you your quoted speed bad enough to make them cry.
kester76

Virgin, just moved about 5 months ago and went from 100mbit to 51mbit as moved on the wrong side of the estate :disappointed: Complained a lot to Virgin and they got round to finishing off the road. Just got to do my close but I've got 8 months left on the contract so I'm happy. Roll on Christmas.
Derek_Duval
16 Apr 16 2 #8
Why would anyone renew for 12 months and pay over the odds for a marginal increase that you probably don't need or would notice? Signing up for another 12 months is hardly free. Prices are almost guaranteed to increase as well. Chances are other providers will follow suit. Interesting to know though, thanks op.
awhitham to Derek_Duval
16 Apr 16 #9
but if you phone up and tell them they are too expensive they will discount their prices anyway so even as an existing customer there is no need to pay the quoted rates!!

How do you actually do this. Do I need to log in once on the BT site? All I see from link is the list if be options, nothing about a free upgrade

BT are incompetent.
