Almost every airline does this, the trick is to not use it, they're not going to deny you a seat. Majority of the time you will still be seated together, in my personal experience.. as for luggage, you can always share suitcases as I assume the seating comment meant there are two (or more) of you. Or fly with Virgin for £600+ with luggage & taxes included in the price as standard.
