Cheap and cheerful case, those internals! Only two memory slots and both filled, PSU doesn't appear even to have an 80 Plus rating sticker on it, never mind bronze, very basic motherboard, albeit features don't matter to a lot of people so so what... but... assuming it's as advertised, you win, John Lewis, it's cheaper than anything I could build with those components, assuming I wanted to, especially including that Windows licence, and that three year warranty is welcome. If I could find out a bit more about the PSU, I would even direct a friend to buy it rather take up a chunk of my time off building it for them. Have some more heat!

I have looked inside, the specs are accurate, its a 2GB GTX 950M. Its not a laptop card, but not a GTX950 either, I think its made for this PC only, there is nothing else like it, closest think is the GTX 950 mini but even that is GDDR5 where as this is 3. It is worth the £229 with the discount but not much more, only good part inside is the CPU

Bought one of these machines yesterday and the description on the JL site says "NVIDIA GeForce GTX950M graphics card can be enjoyed in 4K/UHD as well as spread across three HD displays". The photo of the rear of the computer also shows at least one HDMI port along with a couple of what I think are displayports and a full size DVI. The machine actually comes with one HDMI and one VGA. I don't think you could run three displays off that. Spoke to JL who really didn't seem to care, didn't apologies for the inaccurate description. Will return the computer for a refund.

The "M" series of graphics cards are found in laptops. I imagine the "M" stands for "Mobile". It doesn't make any sense why this desktop gaming PC has one.
I've been onto John Lewis too, by phone. It's been a nightmare trying to get hold of someone who can help, they keep telling me it's with the 'back end' and I have to wait for a call too. Though I did get a call from their social media team once I started tweeting them about it - they said there's an investigation going on and they'll be in touch once they decide what to do about it. Still have to wait for another call back though.

Has anyone heard from John Lewis yet?
This is my first time with John Lewis. What with the likes of Amazon, etc., I never thought to shop at John Lewis.
The first person I spoke to on the telephone couldn't have cared less. He said just to return it to the shop for them to sort out. I tried again and the second person I spoke to was more helpful in getting the facts and working out where to go with this, but I'm yet to hear what's happening. I was told they've passed this on to their customer relations department to try and sort this mess out, and to expect a call back.

I've never known JL to be so intransigent and obstructive in my life. It was almost impossible to speak to a manager. He actually refused to talk to me until I absolutely insisted. I did record the conversation but I'm upset with myself that I didn't record the conversation with JL in the evening of the 5tj when they absolutely guaranteed I'd get my order as agreed with the 980. U shall complain next week when I have more time. The manager refused to discuss why my order was not cancelled when they discovered their error.

I am really surprised by JL's behaviour here.
I have ordered and it is ready for collection from 2pm tomorrow.
Since I ordered JL clearly know they have made mistakes as they have at least twice downgraded the online description.
Why are they not contacting me to advise me of their mistake?
They are going to let me waste my time / parking fees, etc to turn up be 'surprised' that the item is not what I ordered.
Surely it would be more professional / honest / simply the right thing to do to contact me and fess up and offer to cancel the order.
Their approach is disappointing. As a regular JL customer I am going to be likely to widely share my disappointment.
Poor show JL.

When I saw they had sold out, I went for the option to be emailed when they had more in. The email that came today said nothing about a specification change, and fair enough presumably it's automatically generated. Could they perhaps have followed it up with an erratum notice, I don't know, companies work their employees pretty hard, mistakes are made. If I hadn't been following this one on hotukdeals, though, I could have gone from disappointment at missing a good priced offer that I found, to disappointment at missing it from waiting too long to place my order, to elation that more stock came in, to disappointment when I found out they'd changed the spec on me! Still, nothing ventured, nothing gained and at least you guys tried, good on you.

I'm pretty sure that under the law they are required to fulfil the original order once the contract had been agreed. Prior to that any price of an item is called an invitation to treat. In my opinion JL are in breach of contract.

Exactly the same has happened to me. I just made a special journey to waitrose Hexham and found my pc is a 950 and not 980. I actually called John Lewis last night and I was assured that I would be getting the 980 gpu. I did cut and paste the original specifications when I ordered. So when I get home I'll be getting straight on to JL. Even worse is that I won't get my money back for up to 14 days

John Lewis has messed up here! It has a lowly NVIDIA GTX 950M (2 GB) - not a GTX 980 (4 GB) as advertised.
It also has a DVD rewriter - not a Blu-ray rewriter as advertised.
Specification:
GPU: NVIDIA GTX 950M (2 GB), with 1 x HDMI and 1 x VGA output.
CPU: 3.4 Ghz I7-6700.
Memory: 12 GB DDR4 2133 (4 GB + 8 GB).
Motherboard: Asus H110-I/G11CD/DP_MB.
I can't see the motherboard properly, because there's a warranty sticker over the case opening.

I'm got getting into a debate about best gpu. This is a stunning deal. Why are so many people on here so quick to put down these cracking deals. Bottom line is you couldn't build a PC with these specs for anywhere near this price. Oops that opens a can of worms. Get ready for all those who say they can. I already push my 970 effortlessly to 3840x2160 on most games so the 980 will be a dream

There is no debate, the 980ti and Titan X are categorically better than the stock 980 :stuck_out_tongue: Just wanted to make it known as less techy people might have taken your word for gospel.
Bit of a mixed bag, you get a propriety motherboard, single PCIE 16x, and whatever PSU and cpu heatsink they decided to include.
As good as the 3 year warranty may be, I'd be sure to check if it still covers you if you upgrade any components.

Yeah Cuda cores can be used a fair bit by Media Encoder and Premiere, but it's still not as important as a decent CPU for sure. For GPU you're right, Nvidia is definitely the way to go for a workstation, and don't bother with any of the ridiculously overpriced 'workstation' quadros or anything. All they do is have a couple of 'industry standard' things, maybe 10bit reproduction and a lot of cuda cores - You can have the same in a high-end GPU like a titanX or similar for a quarter of the price of a quadro.

This is an incredible deal and the price has to be wrong. A 980 is £500 alone. The combination of that coupled with the i7 put it over £800. Get this now. This is not a mid range gaming PC but it's a high end machine with the best gpu you can buy. I've just bought a gaming PC with a 970 but I'm sorely tempted by this.
kr00t0n to mark6226

Plenty of 980s around the £400 mark, cpu around £250. Also it is not the best gpu you can buy, Nvidia themselves have 2 higher tier cards, and the top AMD cards actually also beat it at higher resolutions. And I have a 980 myself :stuck_out_tongue:

Hmmm 4k... A pc like this will manage, but rendering would be pretty slow. I stand by my original suggestion. More cores the better!
I recently bought a 5820k, a MSI X99A mobo and 32gb of ddr4 RAM for my workstation PC at work, came to about £630 overall. Id recommend something like that (with a cheap graphics card - No need for a gaming one like this) and case for a full build..
Unfortunately that's what this PC is really, just a mid-range gaming PC. I wouldn't recommend for a workstaiton.
Hope this helps!

4 Apr 16#76
I agree that JL has almost certainly misprinted the specs. I think it's typical for a non-specialist site, like JL, to mess up the technical specifications of PC products. Just look at this Asus desktop (http://www.johnlewis.com/asus-rog-g20cb-gaming-desktop-pc-intel-core-i7-16gb-ram-2tb-black/p2531249?imageCount=4), also listed on JL, which is almost same spec as the one in OP, besides 4 GB more RAM, a snazzier case and, laughably, a GTX 960M GPU, which is a laptop graphics card lol. And this PC is listed for £1299.95 so my confidence in JL pricing the OP PC correctly is very low.
BadgerFiend
4 Apr 16#55
What concerns me is that the page states the ASUS G11CB which is the cheaper, mid-range rig with a GTX 960. But then the specs say a GTX 980 which supposedly only comes with the ASUS G20CB. Hopefully just a typo
trakker1 to BadgerFiend

There are so many versions of the G11CB, it's bewildering, but the John Lewis variant, the UK015T, appears to be unique to John Lewis. Hope it's not a mis-spec or a misprice, I have my fingers crossed for those interested in it. I will tune back in, tomorrow!

4 Apr 16#71
Well that's not strictly true (about it not being a decent gaming PC). A pretty decent gaming machine could run an i5 and a GTX970. I think for the average user i.e not an overclocker or expert this has enough power to run most games decently. Admittedly the fact that the card is no longer available is a worry :/ I'm running an old i3 3570k and a 660TI so this looks great for an instant upgrade. I only say this as the cost of getting everything upgraded to Skylake etc would cost me more than this and, although I build my own PC's, I'm am definitely not a power user. The 3 year warranty is attractive too
Edit: 12GB of RAM is super weird. 8 + 4??
MBeeching
4 Apr 16#70
The GTX 980 is likely the Asus branded reference card. They're probably not shipping/manufacturing them anymore as it's an unpopular choice with GPU customers. The reference card is quite nice though and could still have competitive overclocks (1500mhz), it just lacks guaranteed boosts and slightly higher temps. The big advantage with reference is it uses a blower to dump heat out the back of the case. (Edit: Don't overclock with that crappy PSU )
I agree about the RAM (that is weird unless DDR4 ships in 6gb sticks?), and obvious cost-cutting measures everywhere, but a 980 Ti is asking a lot :stuck_out_tongue:
gr8h8me
4 Apr 161#69
Not for me...its trying to be a gaming machine which it clearly isn't. For the money it ticks the box but look closely boards poor, not a k chip, not a ti card for a bit more yiu could have had so much more and 12gb of ram very strange. Spending That money do it properly

Does anyone else share a concern that this maybe a misprice?
The ASUS G11CB on Currys website is i5-6400 with GTX 950 for £899 - before even thinking about warranty and JL customer service benefits.
If it is a misprice will John Lewis cancel order or honour deal?
Noclouds to willubby
4 Apr 161#67
Don't quote me on this, because I am using Google translate on a Spanish review and a Norwegian one but, assuming the computers are the same apart from a clearly visible M.2 drive in the review picture, the graphics card used, judging from the very distinctive shroud, appears to be a single fan ASUS GTX980-4GD5 running at 1.13Ghz. As far as I can tell, that card is no longer available (discontinued?), which might, or might not, explain the John Lewis price. The lack of product detail is frustrating.
watson44 to willubby
4 Apr 16#68
according to ASUSNorthAmerica there are only 2 models, a basic i5-6400 with a GTX 960 and advanced i7-6700 with GTX 980
if it is a mis-price, JL are most likely to cancel the order but i wouldn't be surprised @ PCW/ Currys switching components (both PCW models have an i5)
I guess I just have the mindset that USB-C will take quite a while to become readily available so most users won't find much benefit from having one on a desktop.

I don't like any pre-builds, half the fun is spending a little more time making everything nice. Arguably this is good value for core components and a working unit. The downside is never having that confidence to change the PSU, transfer it all into a quality case, install an upgrade or slap a good CPU cooler on. It's all very logical when you do it yourself.
Suffice to say... I don't know :stuck_out_tongue:

I need a gaming PC, was looking to buying separate, but was worried about building it up. is this a decent spec that's future proof for a good few years gaming? I might swap out ram to have 16gb and add an ssd, but is this a decent base to work from? also is the gfx 2gb or 4gb?
MIDURIX to internetred

It is a great spec and is a good base to do what you said, but it isn't a fantastic base for much else without changing motherboard, power supply, case etc.

I'm baffled, that's sensible advice. Adding an SSD (250gb min) is ideal for Windows, your favourite games and most applications. Any media, download folders and less critical games will be quite comfortable residing on the hard drive. Not using an SSD on a PC with these specs is criminal.

4 Apr 161#51
If you want overclocking on Skylake, you need a Z170 chipset-based motherboard. The CPU on this one is 6700 so is locked and not overclockable anyway. You need the unlocked 6700K or any other K version Skylake processor to overclock.
Great price for this spec, even with the low-end motherboard. CPU and GPU is great and everything else seems adequate for users wanting a high-end general workhorse PC but not needing extreme performance from overclocking.

without wanting to start a debate, i just noticed some turn offs:
I'm confused about the USB C part. Unless you mean something else, A/B/C usually refers to the plug/port. Majority of computers will have only USB A ports. Having a reversible type C port on a desktop would serve no purpose since it's used mostly as a device port rather than a host port.

4 Apr 16#32
Mostly fine yes. Single core performance here would be good and the 12gb would cover you mostly. If it's just sequencing & basic editing you're doing then yes this is 'fine', but any more than that and i'd be looking at older generation hex/oct core CPUs ('latest i7' isn't that important) or even older xeons.
The newer gear is technically 'better' and more efficient etc, however when it comes to editing/compositing/animating you want pure speed any way possible, and lots of RAM. LOTSSSSS of ram.
a 5820k rig or even an older 4790k, with a little overclock, would destroy this 6700 when it comes to multicore tasks (like video editing etc) Look at some cinebench scores to get an eye for prices etc.

There's a picture of the back showing a hdmi and the description mentions one. There's a DVI on the pic but that's not mentioned in the description. I can't imagine there's any 980s that aren't packing several outputs. As long as you're not wanting to use HDMI for the normal monitor output too you should be fine. Even then you can buy dvi to hdmi cables.

Wow a well balanced well priced machine pre built. I must be dreaming! Now do I spend my bonus before I get it April end... How much will it be...
I was referring to the price of the PC, Not its relative performance. When you get pre-built machines at a good price like this, they tend to go big on the cpu and graphics, then use crappy low quality RAM, PSU and motherboard to make up for it. This one seems to be quality all the way (although, i can't confirm what motherboard it is using).
Either way, I heated and even mentioned it's a pretty powerful PC at that price
The PSU is nothing special (Delta DPS-500) and I doubt it even has bronze efficiency, but you could change it further down the line. Cable management looks like a nightmare though in that cheap case with a 'gaming' fascia...
nyasham
4 Apr 16#3
Assuming the RAM is DDR4, the PSU is at least 500W 80 Plus Bronze and the motherboard is not proprietary, this is actually an outstanding price. I would challenge someone to build a PC of the same spec for less. The money saved could go towards a decent SSD and USB C pci card and still compare to a custom build.
Heat from me and good find
Raaawr to nyasham
4 Apr 16#11
The ram doesn't need to be DDR4,even for video editing or gaming there's negligible improvements. As long as the PSU is good enough to run the system it should be fine, unless you want to upgrade in the future. SSD is a must though.

What kind of wizard copy-pastes incorrect item descriptions? I've seen this happen a lot with PC World, but this is a first for John Lewis (in my experience)
Many thanks
edit: I think I'm going to return it -_-'
It also has a DVD rewriter - not a Blu-ray rewriter as advertised.
Anyone interested in some pics/list of major components?
UPDATE: Click here to find the details!:disappointed:
Bit of a mixed bag, you get a propriety motherboard, single PCIE 16x, and whatever PSU and cpu heatsink they decided to include.
As good as the 3 year warranty may be, I'd be sure to check if it still covers you if you upgrade any components.
If I had the money I would buy this, it is lovely.
An SSD will improve it but it will work fine without one, once you know more you can spend some money on an SSD but you don't need one to start using this straight away.
Also, note this _doesn't_ come with a screen.
I'm looking for a pre-built with i5 6600k, 4gb Gtx 970 if anyone knows of any good deals available.
It sounds like a great deal but it's already been said that I'd rather pick my own set up would contain minor upgrades, like making the ram 16gb rather than 12,
£1,400 for the spec listed
https://m.alza.co.uk/asus-g11cb-cz013t-d3837425.htm
Good luck to anyone that's ordered but I'm sure they will be cancelled tomorrow.
Edit: 12GB of RAM is super weird. 8 + 4??
I agree about the RAM (that is weird unless DDR4 ships in 6gb sticks?), and obvious cost-cutting measures everywhere, but a 980 Ti is asking a lot :stuck_out_tongue:
The ASUS G11CB on Currys website is i5-6400 with GTX 950 for £899 - before even thinking about warranty and JL customer service benefits.
