Good price considering its build quality. There are better aftermarket charger cables that are a bit more robust but they cost between £8-£13

Considering you can have a fully working brand new Nokia phone for £8 I'd say it's far from "good price" for a cable costing £0.06 to manufacture and ship from China.

Not that I'd pay £17 for a cable, but I'm sure I read somewhere that Apple will replace any damaged/broken official cables free of charge so could be worth it if you are particularly heavy handed plugging/unplugging the charger.

I can personally attest to PC World having a 5 metre heavy duty Lightning cable for £12. One of the IWantIt range. Obviously the PC World website isn't working right now (irony) so I can't post a link. I've had the cable for about a year now though and shows zero signs of wear.

This is a good deal if it exists and was not just a glitch in Glasgow. If I get a moment I'll check out the local Asda store.
Apple cables are ridiculously expensive (about £15), so I have been using one of the pastel coloured ones from Poundland/Poundworld for the past year with no problems whatsoever (see a previous post on HUKD).
Ankers are very good quality, any problems whatsoever and they will replace.
However the poundland ones work fine, build quality isnt so good and certainly for android they dont seem to charge as quick.

I can only go by what I do, whereas others might have other recommendations or chime in with better options.
What I did was do a search on threads for this in the past and see what people have recommended and look carefully at the ones people say have been not very good. Sometimes I wait for these items to become available on special offer as they can be quite pricey at their normal price.
I have a household of 5 each with their own idevice that needs a lightning cable - we only buy the longer ones, and go for ones that look like they may last longer because my wife and the children seem to like to have the cable bent right where it joins the plug, which can leed to problems.
I no longer buy the cheep ones from Poundland, etc, or China, and I look out for the MFI logo which means it contains the ludicrous apple authentication chip inside. I'm probably going to miss out a couple as I am just browsing through my amazon order history on the term 'lightning'. The longer ones I have bough that seem to be more robust than the standard ones that come with the device are:
Do a search for Lidl 1.5m cables. £4.99 when they become available during the course of the year. Aldi no doubt are also doing the same thing now.
AmazonBasics Apple Certified Lightning to USB cable 1.8m. £7.29 from Amazon. They have had a few tweaks and improvements in the last couple of years. Like the Lidl ones, they are immediately more robust build quality than the Apple ones and to tend to last longer. Reviews mainly very favourable, though if they break you can get them replaced easily under warranty.
TeckNet (Apple MFI Certifield) 2.0M Apple Lightning to USB Cable. £6.29 on Amazon and come with an 18 month warranty.
Anker PowerLine 6ft Apple MFi Certified Lightning to USB Cable Sturdy Charging Cord £7.99 at Amazon with an 18 month warranty.
I haven't bought a new lightning cable for a little while so posts on here in recent months may give you more up to date information as to ones to look out for. Hope this gives you a good start

to have more than one cable? I have a cable at work, one next to bed, one in car, one in bag for travelling etc. etc. You can't compare a charging cable to a dumbphone, completely different uses and products. That's like saying £10 for a box of nappies?! I can get a 14" pizza for less than half that! bizarre statement.
Tino_G
19 Apr 16#65
True, but you need to be within the warranty of the product the cable was supplied with. Only managed to get mine changed because it was still covered by my 1 year IPhone warranty. Headphones are included in this too - had them changed a couple times too.
BenderRodriguez
19 Apr 16#66
Pizzas and nappies are different products. Cables and phones come out of the same factory. Phones are far more costly and complex to design and manufacture than 1m of wire wrapped in rubber.
If anything here is dumb it's going to be paying £17 for a cable, no matter how hard you're trying to convince yourself you spent it wisely.

A lot of cheap lightning to USB cables don't pass/convert digital audio through them, they just charge & sync data.
So at this price the original Apple lead would be a bargain. Only thing is, it's probably only at 1 or 2 stores around the country, so can't really vote hot for this.
s24adm
19 Apr 161#75
cables and phones come out of the same factory?! since when. There not one big "electronics factory" that anything remotely related come from. Cables can be manufactured anywhere, phones have components mostly manufactured in china but could be assembled anywhere also.
As for costs, if those products started life at the same time sure, a cable should and would be cheaper - whatever phone you are referring to is clearly built using off the shelf tech from 10+ years ago - the same spec phone when newly released would have cost in the hundreds easily. The lightning cable is fairly recent and a proprietary design which up until recently wasn't able to be reverse engineered - hence why so many cheap cables fail or show error messages when plugged in. The R&D and licensing costs are factored into new tech like this which is why it costs more than a micro-usb cable for example. Similar to why a proprietary Sony memory card costs 10x more than a standard sd card.
and as I said originally, I didn't and wouldn't buy one at £17 (so I'm not convincing myself of anything) - and in fact this "deal" is only for £1.97 so I don't understand your rant at all. You'd be lucky to find a decent knock-off lightning cable that worked well for this price, let alone an official apple cable with warranty.

3m is the maximum length specified in the "Made for IPhone" technical design guides. I wouldn't ever buy anything for an iOS device unless it has the MFI stamp which says it has been tested to a benchmark quality. Belkin, griffin etc all use MFI standards.
