The main flight, form Gatwick to Toronto is on Air Canada Rouge. This is their low cost arm. It won't be the same as an Air Canada flight (from Heathrow).

As above, "Rouge" is their no frills service. Doesn't come with standard IFE, it's on a tablet device.

WestJet also worth looking at

Air Canada Rouge was by far the worst airline I've travelled with. You do get what you pay for. Meals basic as one ice cold bread roll and butter with water, seats very uncomfortable and plane so cold they give you blankets. Lack of entertainment systems. Would definitely pay a bit more for something better, especially for a longer haul flight. Flew same route with air transat and was miles better.

Air Transat are from £350 return. I find they are OK. Air Transat also point out that you need an ESTA to enter Canada now, like you do to go to the USA. An ESTA is a visa waver document for those who don't know that.

thanks for the info - think with the dates offered, we may be in the clear?
As of March 15, 2016, visa-exempt foreign nationals are expected to have an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) to fly to or transit through Canada. Exceptions include U.S. citizens, and travellers with a valid Canadian visa. Canadian citizens, including dual citizens, and Canadian permanent residents are not eligible to apply for an eTA.
However, from March 15, 2016 until fall 2016, travellers who do not have an eTA can board their flight, as long as they have appropriate travel documents, such as a valid passport. During this time, border services officers can let travellers arriving without an eTA into the country, as long as they meet the other requirements to enter Canada. Find answers to your questions about the leniency period.

jeczap - I did see the leniency notice. Maybe your dates are OK, if you know what they mean by "fall 2016"! My present proposed dates are not in the fall, I am sure, but I would rather get the ESTA early to cover me instead of risking being denied entry! The problems I found was that the ESTA website did not tell you the cost or the period covered by an ESTA. Of course you will find out the cost before you buy but will you also be told the period? This is just another tax on travelers.

'fall', rather than a date! -I chuckled at that, too!
