Put her money away! Go to one of the refurb outlets and get yourself a core2duo dell 755/760. Hundreds of these about ex govt/ company machines get sff or my versions not usff Around £50-60 mark. Then by yourself a evga gt610 graphics card ( works out the box) then follow this guide
So I guess plex transcoding wouldn't work very well on this?

Maybe for one possibly two concurrent streams but no more
Or get a decent client which can go 'native'

Great to know. I'm trying to think of the best way utilise this as a perimeter device with multiple NICs. I'd probably need to go down the USB NIC route

a few stupid questions:
1> How good is the CPU?
2> Is it quick for webbrowsing and youtubing?
3> Can I put in another SSD next to the original 32GB SSD?
4> Is it fanless (ie quiet/noisy?)?

For 12 quid more you can get the Brix from Amazon with J1900. It has twice the cpu grunt (roughly) which will be noticeable at some point. Doesn't come with 2GB ram, 32GB Memory or Dos, should you need such things.

All these so called "32GB SSD" units are pretty crap - whether laptops or mini pcs.
They usually have no internal sata interface and the SSD is not an SSD, it is slow eMMC storage which is usually soldered into place - which means if it fails, you can junk the whole unit!
False economy - don't buy!

Yep. Like I stated in my 3rd sentence. Ram so cheap right now that I would simply put the 2gb in the bin, not even worth the time to eBay it, and throw in a 8GB stick.
These barebones units are mainly bought by blokes who like to tinker, and who hasn't got a spare drive and soddim lying around, purchase at an irresistible price thanks to this very site?

Plug it into a tv with hdmi, when I first tried to set up my nuc, I had to use a 720p tv, it wouldn't work on a 1080p tv.
You can try to install from a usb cd drive, but a bootable usb stick might be easier. You might need to change bios settings to get it to boot.

Tiny spec, no choice of software, and half the drive bays, for the sake of £55. Microserver worth the extra  What's it max out at, 50, 60 MB/s? That's not the drives or the network limiting things you know!
