Seems a decent deal from a reputable supplier. Haven't had any issues with gamestop personally, although i know some have. Sure some of these old 360's arent the most reliable but the 60gb models should be ones from later on, and at £36 it should be worth a punt if you're in the market for a cheap console.

Ohh, pre-built. Yeah I'd already built a PC that was about 1 and a half times more powerful than a 360 at the time.
When you say "most", I think you mean those holiday booking PC's in Thompsons...? Because PC's absolutely hammered every single console before they were even launched, and after. If only it were solely about CPU to have a machine zip along. You just have an SLI set up and chuck more RAM in and get the kind of framerates that make your eyeballs bleed. Please don't extend these bizarre statements to the first PlayStation. The graphics on those were laughable compared to what was being enjoyed on the PC for some years before. This is not about the old "PC master race" chestnut it's about the simple fact consoles are not very upgradeable at all and the fact is they've had to become more like hybrid PC's in order to not just come to a complete standstill technologically - which would tend to tell you something about which is best for gaming.

I usually do follow them but albeit I haven't recently. This doesn't surprise me though, people were asking for it for many years and now that they're finally doing something in regards to it people no longer want it.

At launch they were the most powerful consumer gaming devices available. Although they only stayed on top graphically for a short period before equally powerful graphics cards came out they still were briefly top and commanded a price to match. As this Nvidia chart shows...
And for CPU power they were unmatched for years, most home PC's at the time were not even Dual Core let alone Octa Core when the PS3/360 came out. The Dreamcast/PS2/Xbox era were also the most powerful home machines people could buy at launch, you could only get better graphics on arcade machines.
The PS4 and XBONE however are about half the power of a top end graphics card when released hence why the launch price was half and the lifespan will be shorter.

It affects me as well as any PC gamer that has consoles for exclusivity...after a drying up of software on the 360 I learned my lesson and have not bought a Xbox One but own a PS4, there really is no exclusives to persuade me otherwise, and this is the final nail in the coffin. People are talking about RROD risk with these consoles. And also fan noise too.
The one thing nobody has mentioned which is very much worth taking on board. And that is the heat pumped out from these consoles.
I had the first model Xbox360. And the heat it produced was quite literally like having an electric portable fan heater going off in your room.
This is fine during the winter months. But during the summer, July and August it is literally torturous. As a result I did not want to play my 360 at all durign the summer months as I couldn't bare it.
I remember one summer GTAIV came out and I ignored this and persevered during the summer months playing it and at the end of any playing session I felt like a Kentucky Fried Chicken my bedroom was like a Sauna. (not joking either).
You can buy an slim "S" model for around £14 more many places (£50/£60 used) during deals that often get posted up here. Buy those if you want a 360. The difference is night and day. The S model is an amazing console. This is junk.

I have an original Xenon chipset 05-06 launch machine. Identified by the 16.5a rated sticker and no HDMI. Beat that. This one was remanufactured in 2009 and replaced all the original Xenons that had failed on me previously. Works perfectly over 6 years later.
Microsoft solved the problem and remanufactured loads of models. If they could sort a genuine original Xenon chipset machine then these Zephyr (with HDMI) or later models will more than likely work even better, so I wouldn't worry about them.

Yeah but when the PS3 and Xbox 360 came out they were comparable to powerful PCs of their generation.
With this generation the consoles that have been released were comparable to mid line PCs.
So I think it's fair to say that the business model has changed and that we are probably half way through the life cycle of this generation of consoles.

what's the best and most up to date way of playing backup games from usb drive on a xbox 360. can someone point me in the right direction please.
They never were the most powerful gaming machines on earth, at any time, ever - mainly because it is physically and technically impossible to make a console more powerful than a gaming PC, since consoles stagnate over years and PC specs are evolving constantly - even to this day. However such a bemusing statement brings back happy memories of when the first Xbox came out, and I stood with amusement in Game as I heard the shop assistant tell a customer "oh the graphics on the Xbox are MUCH better than on PC". Happy days.

6 Mar 16#41
Several things here; he was talking about the next generation of Xbox being upgradable. Think of it as an Xbox Steam Machine using the Xbox OS. Doesn't affect Xbox One.
Secondly, the Windows/Xbox thing is, more precisely, sharing of Windows 10 apps only. There will be games appearing on both platforms, though the ones announced for PC are slightly different (Gears of War remastered is tinkered with and Forza 6 is a custom built version for PC) but I still think there are thousands of gamers who want a console over a PC so it won't affect them. The majority of both Xbox One and PS4 games seem to make their way to PC these days, anyway.
Of course, there are no real details on any of this until they flesh it out and it's not like Microsoft are adverse to doing a U-turn on any of their decisions!
Good price for a cheap 360, though. Would suit things like youth clubs or groups to use.

I can only assume you don't follow gaming related news at all right?
Well ever since what I personally have dubbed 'quantumbreakgate' went on between Spencer and the crapgamer on twitter the whole Xbox division has been on the defensive and been spinning alll sorts like would make Alastair Campbell proud.
Just google it yourself but more Xbox exclusives have been rvealed to be going over to PC, including a free version Forza and Spencer was also talking about hardware add ons for the Xbone a la PC gaming.
Bottom line they've clearly already given up on this generation because the PS4 is so far ahead and no I'm not a Sony fan baby as I'm someone who owns all three current gen consoles.
David23
6 Mar 161#38
The problem was this started out as being the lowest powered console generation ever (to achieve post recession pricing and deal with the shrinking hard core gaming market). Gone the days where a new Xbox or PlayStation were the most powerful gaming machines on earth at launch with a price tag to match. Now the PS4 and XBONE are the same power as a mid range PC. This means that decade long lifecycles are no longer possible and that's why they are thinking about constant refreshes and add on units. I think the idea that Xbox games can play on Windows 10 is a good idea as there are lots of titles I want to play without having to buy their console but as you touched upon it's going to become very muddy as to what will work on which system and out will come the flash from the past 'requires expansion pak' style stickers! As you said in the old days they got none of the sweet PC hardware upgrade cash and by PC-fying the Xbox they can do that.
Regarding this deal I think £36 is slightly too high, under £20 would be about right considering they are the older 360's. Amazon had a black friday lightning deal years ago for brand new 360's for £50!
xbox one and pcs running win 10 are now (or will be) cross compatible. looks like an xbox environment like stram will function in win10 to maintain your library.not for some titles...ALL xboxone titles will be win 10 compatible(and vice versa presumably)
the ropey bit is his announcement that xbox will stop getting 'big bang' upgrades every 6/7 years....from now on updated versions will come out every year or two without a big rebrand...he seems to compare it to the iphone hardware cycle. also they will encourage 'upgrade add ons' a bit like n64 ram pack type upgrades.
the worry is that that will fragment the xbox market the same way the pc market is fragmented.... your 2 year old xbox might only be able to run 75% of new titles and run thise slower/lower framerate than a 'new' xbox one. from m$ point of view they can scam gamers into buying a new pc or at least a graphics card every two years but they never made money out of that... they have been itching to get their hands on that hardware cash...
You'll be getting Xbox One refurbs at this sort of dough if you're willing to wait a couple of months after all the announcements Spencer made this week :smirk:

reddragon105 to WiggyDiggyPoo
5 Mar 162#14
Only slims have 4gb internal storage. Some of the later phats did have 256mb or 512mb internal storage.
As these 360s come with a 60gb hard drive they should be from mid-2008 or later, as that's when those were introduced - unless they're pairing up older consoles with 60gb hard drives, which is possible.

therealjohnpeat to UberPark
5 Mar 161#13
ALL 360s have backwards compat. because it's a software not hardware thing (on a limited range of titles with mixed results if we're honest)
In theory, all 360s can RROD too - the worst offenders are the earlier designs pre 'Jasper' chipset - this page explains how to tell if you have it

I used to have a original type white 360 (was the HDD less core model) between about 2007 and 2011. To be fair it never had any kind of failure at all, despite the early ones being known to rrod.
However, the noise was appalling on it both fan and drive noise, was just tolerable in games but made TV/movie watching impossible.
Replaced it with the black slim model in 2011, which I still have, massively better machine, virtually silent by comparison.
Not sure if these are as bad for noise but these days I'd always recommend the slim version, doubt it would be that much more either...

the ropey bit is his announcement that xbox will stop getting 'big bang' upgrades every 6/7 years....from now on updated versions will come out every year or two without a big rebrand...he seems to compare it to the iphone hardware cycle. also they will encourage 'upgrade add ons' a bit like n64 ram pack type upgrades.
the worry is that that will fragment the xbox market the same way the pc market is fragmented.... your 2 year old xbox might only be able to run 75% of new titles and run thise slower/lower framerate than a 'new' xbox one. from m$ point of view they can scam gamers into buying a new pc or at least a graphics card every two years but they never made money out of that... they have been itching to get their hands on that hardware cash...
Straight over all of their heads.

My advice spend a bit more and buy a slim.
It looks like its an original pre-arcade model - these ones I had three fail and replaced.
If it was an arcade or later (has white drawer and 4gb internal memory) then I'd recommend it.
As these 360s come with a 60gb hard drive they should be from mid-2008 or later, as that's when those were introduced - unless they're pairing up older consoles with 60gb hard drives, which is possible.
In theory, all 360s can RROD too - the worst offenders are the earlier designs pre 'Jasper' chipset - this page explains how to tell if you have it

If it doesn't die in 30 days it's probably AOK tho - just give it a good workout ;0
