They are dangerous as they do not always work. I got shocked myself when replacing a thermostat a year ago. They are not worth risking it when you can use a voltage tester pen for a few pence more. Not only that but the pens are far more efficient in their non-contact detection. You can get cheap ones from Amazon or ebay for less than £2 or if you are prepared to wait, then from China for a little over a quid.

I'd sooner have one of these if you can find stock.

I'm a plumbing and heating engineer and rely on these every day for screwing/unscrewing terminal screws within heating control switches. They have yet to fail/kill me when ensuring the electric supply has been correctly isolated at the consumer unit. Saves a lot of time having to pull out an eletrical tester first then swapping to an electrical screwdriver.

I'm an Electronic Service Engineer working on UPS Systems from 3KVA to 9.6MVA, 415V. I won't risk my life on a cheap tat screwdriver for proving dead, but you feel free to risk yours. If you're allowed to use one on site, that is.
