I was talking with ee on Friday about a phone upgrade. They could offer unlimited Internet using their newly acquired BT network and line rental for £18/mth. There were some free weekend calls but can't remember. He said that he would give me 10gb 4g data for my mobile for free. Might be worth giving them a call if you are an ee customer

Virgin has been excellent for me, there you go, I've had about 4 outages, none lasting that long, since I first got cable broadband, and that was a very very long time ago.

The superhub2 is nothing special, but generally works as well as any other I've had.

I have had a pleasant experience with them for years now! On the other hand when I was with Bt I had nearly daily drop outs and disconnections which got worse when it was raining but all they did is slow my speeds everytime I complained and ultimately said there was nothing wrong their side! I would never go back to them!

It seems that VM performance varies wildly by area & circumstances.

I was happy with them ever since the Nynex days, with blistering fast & largely stable connection, but since the start of Feb my broadband speed has gone off a cliff during the times you actually want to use it (evenings & weekends). I pay for 50Mbps, I'm lucky to get 1Mbps between 5pm - midnight and at weekends.

Streaming video (eg Roku, NowTV) is out of the question.

I can get full-speed near 50Mbps in the small hours of the morning.

Basically they've oversold their network in many places and don't have the capacity to deliver what they've contracted. I strongly recommend that before you sign up to VM you spend some time looking at the community forum ( Virgin Media Community Forum ) to see if people near you are having problems.

I know that many of their customers obviously get great speeds, but you should do some research before you commit. I'm currently paying top dollar for a very poor service, with a constantly-moving 'review date' for improvements.

You'll find issues with every supplier. You only hear about things going wrong, no one is going to make a thread praising Virgin. I've been with them the past couple of years and the speeds are great (and consistent). The only downside is if you miss a bill they cut you off immediately until it's paid.

Was a long time customer with them and asked about this deal when it was originally posted in January. Was told they could match some of it but they would not match the £50 credit that was being offered for new customers so I gave my notice. They didnt bother at all during the notice period to contact me.

However I signed up after giving notice in the other half's name- same surname. I took the deal and they applied the £50 credit to that account. I have been connected for a month now and am paying £5 for the broadband as I paid the line saver , but as a bit of warning did it after i had been connected a few days. So there is a slight mismatch in the contract dates. However after factoring in the credit it worked out as £16.17 per month for phone and line rental compared to £28.50 which they were charging for simple boradband under my contract.

Yes it is the new superhub 3- nothing spectactularly different about this compared to the old superhub 2 in my opinion.

15 Mar 16 #29
i have virgin fibre optic 50mbps and most of the time i get that speed.
It used to suffer from slowdown but that was due to the hub being in a corner behind the sofa. Keep it in an open enough area and you shouldn't suffer slowdown. I did get angry even they increased the monthly price by £1.50 just 4 months into my contract! A quick call sorted that out!

Question please guys: I am with Sky deal that expires in JULY.....it was a deal from MSE that gave bill credit / free broadband; effectively meaning it is very cheap each month.....

Can I take up this Virgin deal, and have it alongside the 'free' sky deal until July.....or is my BT / sky telephone line taken over by Virgin as the new provider?

Thanks in advance, and sorry for random question!

Virgin don't use the BT line so you can have this running alongside Sky. Just make sure to ask for a new telephone number rather than moving your Sky one.

Yes you can but why would you want to pay for two lots of broadband at the same time? This deal is reposted every couple of months. So I'd either wait until the summer before taking it out. Or if you do insist on ordering today I'd ring Virgin and get installation pushed back (you'd probably have to ring two or three times to get it pushed back as far as July though).

15 Mar 16 #35
Virgin are dodgy though man; they're that bad that I record all of my telephone calls with them, especially after I caught them on recording telling me that they would give me a better price if I didn't leave with no additional contract. I was out of contract at the time.

I knew I was recording so i made sure I asked them like 10 times (multiple different people within the department) on recording if they were sure that they were not going to try and tie me in to another contract to give me a better price.

They swore I had nothing to worry about and that they were simply reducing the price as I was a long standing customer that had never missed a bill. A few months later I decided f**kit im leaving anyway as they kept doing work on the network in my neighbourhood, so I phoned them up and told them to come and get their kit as I'm leaving.

They were like but you're in contract sir, so you will have to settle that first. They were like you took out a new contract not so long ago and I was like BS, they were like theirs nothing on our system about any special discount or price reduction.

Anyway, I obviously escalated it up the ladder, forwarded over the recording, got an apology and ended up with a better price. I hate to think of how many people have had one over on them thanks to their scamming deceitful sales team.

Just think of all those people who thought they were managing their contracts and bills correctly only to have some scheming little sales team bas***d mess them up, get them in bad credit, get them black listed and what not.

I personally hate Virgin, I only use them as they're one of the better of all evils in my neighbourhood.

Good advice mate. Twice I've been promised something on the phone and then they've not delivered what was agreed.
Wish I'd had a recording. Never rely on the fact that VM record the calls as in a dispute they can never seem to be able to retrieve the recording.
Latest scam was I recontracted in December and checked numerous times that I would still be able to get the free upgrade from 50mb to 70mb. Once the ink had dried I found I couldn't get the upgrade because I'd recontracted......

Ah thank you for your reply.....I am actually paying nothing for line rental or broadband, due to the "credit" that was put on my account via the MSE deal last year.....so it would be the free sky alongside the virgin deal (I would then just give notice to sky in June to leave in July when it ceases to be free)

15 Mar 16 1 #45
Yes. They're two different types of boradband. They have nothing to do with each other. Virgin broadband comes down the TV cable, whereas every other companies' uses the telephone line method. If you were going from Sky to any other company, bar Virgin, then yes you would need to hand in your notice and request a MAC code. But again because Virgin is different you can have their's and a telephone line based BB at the same time. I have 50Mb/s Virgin BB without a phoneline for £23.50pm.
Taksim_Red
15 Mar 16 1 #46
Cool. Your choice of course but I'd just take a quick look down these search results before I went jumping into anything too soon persoanlly. You'll see how regularly this gets posted, which is pretty much every month or two. Again if you do wish to order today, then the delaying the install tactic is another good weapon which should work at least a couple of times.

Had lots of problems with Virgin in the past but got offered a better deal recently so stayed with them. Last 6 months or more everything has been very stable, getting slightly higher than the speed we are paying for a lot of the time and never more than 5% less (between 190-210 on the VIVID 200mb) . Also not had any real connection issues, 2-3 disconnects in the last 6 months and those were all fixed within 30 seconds or a router reset.
RealBargainHunter
15 Mar 16 #48
Vivid 200mb fibre broadband only price is shocking! I don't need tv or phone and unfortunately sky isn't providing fibre in our new home postcode, and although I'm not contracted anymore I don't want to cancel as until the next few months I'm sky fee free thanks to previous bill credit offer plus 60% off everything.

What I don't understand is if they are able to provide them speeds (200mb) why not cut the bs and get rid of the 50, 100mb lower speed tariffs completely and instead implement pricing for 6,9,12 month etc contracts. But I suppose in the end something's are only worth what people are willing to accept and pay for it.

The customer is within their rights to record the call, for their own use, when ringing companies such as Virgin Media. They're also under no obligation to inform the representitive of the organisation whom they've speaking with, that they're recording the call.

They must not however make a third party privy to the contents of the recording, such as a friend or family member, without prior consent of the individual or organisation (as this goes beyone "own use"). Playing the recording to the line manager of the representitive is acceptable as they're not deemed a third party.

You can. Here's what I did, find the deal you want on USwitch, phone virgin media and tell them about the deal. They WILL match the deal (if they don't, tell them you'll go to sky or elsewhere and they'll soon match it). Tell them you have a new customer £50 and then once they have processed that, tell them that you've been referred by a friend (you will need the referral code from the friend at this point). VOILA

Gutted. I was on 50 mb with a landline (compulsory) for about £22 then over 4 years with increases and then me threatening to leave I managed to get to £25 for about 2 of the 4 years. Recently they tried it again with the increase and it is at £27.99 for the same and they will go back down to £25 but I wanted more off and they called my bluff lol.

So I am in my notice period until 1st April and I haven't heard back. The deal you have is spot on for what I need as I only use BB. Do you think I should grovel my way back? lol.

You need to be kind to be mean. Phone them and say you're struggling to afford the monthly outgoings and you've seen a deal with Sky that is better (they may check so don't lie!).
Be nice to them on the phone and they will be nice in return. If the first person you speak to doesnt sounds like they are 'kind', hang up and try with another person instead.

If all else fails, ask to speak to the retentions department as its more than likely that they can offer better deals and negotiate better than the first people you talk to.

adamwilko007 to RealBargainHunter
23 Mar 16 #113
How did you get this deal please?!
RealBargainHunter
23 Mar 16 #114
The same way as stated by the OP plus was given refferal thanks to Mr Murphy.
The free speed boost will be rolling out nationally throughout this year to every VM customer. I just called VM saying this is what I was offered upon signing up and I will instead cancel before the install and switch to sky instead if the incentives are not added, called their bluff and they added it :smirk:

Anyone have a referral code? It would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Would you mind answering a couple of questions as I'm having all kinds of trouble trying to get a deal like yours?

First of all, I can't seem to get Quidco to play ball because if I choose uSwitch as the vendor I get offered £21 cash back, but if I choose Virgin Media the website obviously doesn't show the £5 unless you go through uSwitch first. How did you manage to get this to track?

Secondly, I've got an email from Virgin after a friend referred me. There's no code as such, just a link to their packages to buy one and then apparently the £50 credit will be applied to both accounts after I pay my first bill. Again, the £5 uSwitch deal isn't listed because the email takes you straight to the Virgin Media website, where the same package is £9 a month. I tried speaking to one of the customer service people on chat but she refused to add the offer because I had gone through a uSwitch link, rather than one of the offers listed on their website.

How did you mange to combine all these offers? I feel like I'm banging my head against a wall already with Virgin and I haven't even signed up yet.
adamwilko007
25 Mar 16 1 #117
you have to call on the phone and ask for the uswitch deal and ask them to apply the refer a friend discount:)
jh787
25 Mar 16 #118
Go through to cashback and leave that tab open.

Click on the refer a friend link and leave that tab open

Finally the uswitch link and put the new customer code in and complete order.

You will get the two £50 discounts for definite because it shows on the screen.

Not sure about the top cashback

If one takes any VM offer, can one definitely keep their landline number (moving from Sky)?

Edit: Found out via their online Chat feature that it should be ok.

Sorry not had chance to reply sooner but adamwilko007 is correct. Just complete the sign up through quidco-virgin media, once you've signed up and received confirmation just give VM a call and state you joined based on this offer.

Just ordered online through quidco using referral link. The £50 credit has shown on the order webpage but quidco did not track. Anyway does not really count on quidco after using the discount. Many thanks again to OP!

Btw, received a confirmation email saying the delivery date is 30/04/2016 though I requested 30/03/2016. Had to call customer service to change back the date, apparently a careless mistake on their side... So better check the date on your confirmation email, everyone.

Virgin broadband if you are in the right area has no equal. I live right next to the exchange in my street and the 200mb just flows
jh787 to tonge77
27 Mar 16 1 #145
Does it flow right through their throttling algorithm...?

I agree that they have no match when it comes to speed but the only time I seem to get my contracted speed of 100mb is late at night.

Other than that at times it's so slow that i have to resort to tethering to my phone.

27 Mar 16 #146

27 Mar 16 #147
Thanks for the codes! Is there an installation charge if you go through this route?
MarzBarz to Wolf39
27 Mar 16 #149
no installation charge apart from the activation cost  which is £9.99.
jh787
27 Mar 16 #148
I'm afraid so.
It's probably been happening since day one but only just noticed because I've started using the internet a lot during peak periods.

Luckily... I'm out of contract.I've given my notice in for the second time after being talked into staying a week back.
Although I was on a decent retention deal(£24 100meg) i decided it wasn't worth it because I never saw those speeds in real world use.
