they only come in 2.5". well there was one model released ages ago in 3.5" but nothing new comes in anything other than 2.5"

There are a lot of ssds that are not 2.5". Mata, m.2. They come up as deals often and are still called ssds. Just wanted to avoid any confusion for people

Refurbished i3 at cheapest is between 180-200 for more than a year now.

2.5 inch SATA SSD is what you want.

You need a 2.5 inch usb hard drive enclosure to transfer windows from HDD to SSD.

SSD should come with system migration software.

use macrium reflect imaging software to swap the data over if you're not doing a clean install.

Not many today's budget laptops come with Office pre-installed. You have to buy seperately.

Just keep the original hard drive, if you ever need to claim warranty repair, swap them back before sending away the laptop.

They are indeed many different sizes and interfaces SSDs at today's market, not just 2.5 inch SATA.

Budget consumer laptops normally do not come with M.2, nor mSata, normally just 1 slot for a 2.5 inch SATA.

The only other option to add hard drive in budget consumer laptops is to replace the DVD-ROM with hard drive caddy.

SSD comes in different sizes/shapes and different interfaces.

Most common and cheapest is 2.5 inch SATA.

There are also M.2 SATA, M.2 PCIE, MSATA etc. They are more expensive than a standard 2.5 inch SATA SSD. They can be a lot faster too, and they save the SATA port, so a 2.5 inch HDD can be in the laptop at the same time for storage.

My 240Gb SANDISK ULTRA® II SSD and Pny Usb3 Hard Drive & Enclosure Kit came with Acronis cloning software.(which was a 50% off @ Amazon black Friday Offers)
Pcmag reviewed the software and gave 31/2 out of 5 Stars. Tried it, not easy to use. But the worst thing is it wanted to delete the original HD at the end, glad I didn't as I needed to rebuild the boot. My verdict RUBBISH !

Instead I used Macrium Reflect Imaging Software as another posting said it was good. It was easy to use and at the it said I mite need to rebuild the Boot and it took care of that too! so 5 Star from me :laughing:

I heard good things about Macrium Reflect. I have not used it before.

I used Acronis few times, never had any problems. Maybe it was some options you choosed.

And I agree, Acronis is not the easiest migration software. I found Samsung's is much better, but it only works with Samsung SSD.

I will give Macrium Reflect a go next time install a SSD.

The A8 is 8GB RAM for £10 more.


You normally only go AMD if the AMD CPU has better GPU. But this A8 does not have a good GPU.

Normally AMD is cheap than Intel. To make both equally attractive, this A8 should be £20/30 cheaper than i3.

I bought this exact laptop last week, it was delivered on Thursday. Opened it up and was feeling pretty chuffed it was in immaculate condition but then turned on and booted up and within 90 secodns a system warning message appeared saying that a problem with the heating system had been detected and the laptop needed to be shut down immediately. It was sent back for refund the next day. I googled the problem and it seems to be a common thing with this model of Toshiba? Anyway I still need a laptop but am a bit hesitant about the level of technical expertise with these refurbs if it fails within 90 seconds. Since it wasn't a major problem to send back I'm thinking of giving Argos refurbs one more chance but a different model. How would this one compare?

Why? Any i5 this price would only be a slight upgrade over an i3.

This one is not bad. The Pentium 3825u is a strong version. It is as powerful as i3-4030u, slightly powerful than this laptop's i3-4005u. The spec is totally adequate for what you want it for.

The downside is the colour, and being HP consumer laptop which does not give people peace of mind that it will last.

HP business laptops are quite good. But HP consumer laptops are quite bad.

That will take a long time.

Refurbished i3 at £200 mark has been holding the position for 1 year and half now.

I think it would be more realistic if you put £250 for a refurb i5 or similar powered A10. That kind of deal could come from time to time.

Received the 8GB version in white today. It has a i3 5005u processor instead of the advertised 4th generation. Really pleased for £240!!! Forgot to mention that it is in pristine condition...
