Whiles kids are shopping with their parents they can help themselves to a piece of fruit to snack on whilst shopping.
The fruit had a number of choices including the original apples/bananas/pears etc.
I just wanted to share this brilliant idea to help kids eat fruit. I hope other supermarkets follow suit:)
I hope this helps everyone with kids:)

It depends on why you wash the fruit. There is nothing wrong with ingesting some natural occurring dust, dirt and bugs. 1 of the 5 a day and an immunity boost thrown in for free.
The sickest kids I know are the cleanest ones.

Some people will always find something to moan about.
It's a great idea so well done Tesco. Fruit for kids and good publicity for them (and rightly so). From a practical standpoint I'm sure they'll iron out problems if it's an ongoing thing.
If you think they can do better or improve then perhaps suggest it to the store manager in a constructive manner rather than moan and complain to random people.

First up let me cover the 'heat' this post has got..... I've seen an underwear thread get hotter just because there's a girl in a swimsuit, and that pun was intended.
You obviously have a hatred for Tesco or very much dislike them for some reason. I'm not going to even pretend whats happening in your cynical mind, there seems to be a few people in there already.
Let me throw this one out to you......Let's say Tesco have fruit that is not quite ripe enough, or didnt get to the supermarket on time for sale so is a little bit older, or maybe its slightly bruised etc etc etc (you'll know all about that shopping in aldi, thats all they sell, I saw the c4 despatches program on aldi) so instead of throwing it away as they cant sell it, they can do something nice and give it away for free ? Not saying thats happening, but its not beyond the realms of possibility.

It's not a case of "Tesco would be way too expensive for you" - I go to Tesco's for 2 or 3 things which Aldi/Lidl do not sell and bulk order from Tesco or Sainsbury for home delivery - it's the case that Lidl Aldi offer lots of good quality fresh produce and doesn't bamboozle the shopper with over the top "choice" all at an extremely good price, it's called being prudent.

My son has never eaten anything while walking round a store that I haven't first paid for. When he was younger, on the few occasions I miscalculated and took him at a bad time, we went in, bought something to eat, left and ate it, went back in and shopped. Letting them eat food you haven't yet paid for is wrong and shouldn't be acceptable to anyone. He'd be totally up for free fruit now he's 13 though, there isn't a moment in a day he isn't hungry, it's amazing, he can eat his weight in food, no matter what I put in there's always room for more, apparently.

The absolutely excellent Keelham Farm Shop on the edge of Skipton (happy to plug this excellent local store) has done this for some time now - they have a really good range of "free fruit" too (my kids especially adore plums and nectarines!). It's a really good idea as hungry kids and shopping rarely make a good combination. Also, free stuff!
Still, glad to see Tescos doing this. When we used to shop at Sainsburys, peas-in-pods were my kids' favourites and a handful would keep them occupied for most of the shopping trip. I don't remember ever paying for them either

Why on earth does the other poster think it states 'WASH before use'? Insectisides, my friend, insectisides!
And as said, trolley handles carry every tom, dick and harry's germs. Remember lots use the toilets in supermarkets and the ones who don't wash their hands has to be seen to be believed. And it does bring up the point of what happens to the waste. Supermarkets have bins (outside), kids drop stuff all the time. Our 2 year old grandchild will eat apples till the cows come home. 2 years olds can be VERY messy! Will Tesco supply baby wipes free? No, it will mean you'll add them to your shop (hey presto, Tesco wins!). But they will lose... 'excuse me madam, this (top variety) apple bag is ripped, it has only 3 apples instead of 6, would you like to go back and get a full bag?' (Kid has eaten 3!! - the crafty parents syndrome).
Tesco is in the dumps - literally. They are losing money fast. This is just a gimmick (albeit sensible to the public) to attract more back. Do you really believe Tesco want kids to have an apple and not the junk by the tills where the real profit is? Of course not. So not hot, not cold. Just a cynical ploy. As usual.

My tesco, a small Tesco Local/Express store in Kirkintilloch, has had this for the last month or so. A crate at the front entrance as you go in with a sign telling you to help yourself to free fruit for your kids while shopping which I have taken advantage of while in with my 2 kids several times.
It is a crate of fresh whole fruits -apples/bananas/tangerines mainly, no cut or sliced stuff or grapes.

The large supermarkets are reacting to losing market share to Aldi & Lidl, where people are going to buy cheaper fruit and veg. Weekly deal in Aldi / Lidl, fruit & Veg for 39p a pack, etc.
For the past decade Tesco has been ripping people off, e.g. putting apples in to fancy pack and trying to charge £3+ for 3 apples making it unaffordable for people to buy plentiful fruit & veg to eat at home.
Now they offer free fruit for kids...

22 Mar 16#175
Come on, be realistic, do you think any fruit you buy in the supermarket could be poisonous, of course it can't, you might get pesticides into your body, but they won't kill you or there will be no proof that at xx% they can kill you, otherwise they wouldn't be allowed to sell the stuff, any poison sufficiently deadly to kill you isn't going to be washed off with a bit of water. Of course a few years down the line, you might have a slightly higher risk of cancer or some other disease but you can be sure you won't be able to trace it back to the free apple you ate aged 5.

Possibly, but if it's fruit that couldn't be sold, you may find the savings not taking this stuff to the tip could cover the costs. who knows, I doubt it's a significant cost either way. In fact knowing Tesco, they're probably charging the supplier for getting rid of the fruit.

No it doesn't. It means "we provide free stuff for kids because we know parents will spend more". Usually the fruit is not ripe, and the longer it stays it ripens and tastes better. So if they do wait until end date, it could be better...

Of course it's a freebie, thanks for the effort op in posting.
But for me cold.

Whether it's an advertising campaign or not it's still beneficial and therefore a deal. Giving people points is a marketing campaign but as you benefit from it your happy.

Are the bananas all vastly under ripe like the ones you can buy or have tesco stores used their brains and not sent them to waste early?

Ive always took a snack with me or picked up a squeezable yoghurt or something for my son (then payed for it once its eaten) Why can't people just do that? Don't get me wrong I love anything thats free but its pretty sad if a parent can't buy a kid a piece of fruit if they want one
nrackham76 to lauradixonn
22 Mar 161#105
I think it's more the fact that they are giving the kids the fruit for free, people could do what you say for items that are not weighted at the till I guess. I think it's a hot idea as these days nothing is free:)

So many think this is an excellent idea to get kids eating healthy fruit and keeping them busy whilst you shop.
So my question is this. Why haven't you all been previously taking fruit with you for the kids whilst you shop?

My local Tesco do this but really dropped the ball by putting out sub standard fruit, which then put me off buying any of their fruit, surely by putting out juicy good quality fruit it would have led on to more sales, great idea, but as usual Tesco have got it wrong.

21 Mar 165#19
It's a great idea due to the amount of people who eat items before getting to the till. Being handed a bag of grapes to weigh minus the grapes was one of the worst i had back when i worked in a supermarket, despite having the facilities for them to print their own labels at the produce aisle. Great bit of PR work by getting good publicity for a what normally constitutes theft.

Whiles kids are shopping with their parents they can help themselves to a piece of fruit to snack on whilst shopping.
The fruit had a number of choices including the original apples/bananas/pears etc.

The rotherham tesco used to make mr want to shower just walking past it.
They've kept the new one clean though and presentable though, and its been open a year or 2 now.
Anybody with 'insider knowledge'?
They tend to keep the kids quieter longer especially the sharing bag size that nobody shares.
And people really fall for this ........................ dear oh dear!
Don't worry, you shop at Aldi anyway, Tesco would be way too expensive for you - no-one has got one up on you, youre safe.
Outrageous behaviour.
No diffrent to if it was "Weatherspoons giving away free pack of crisps when you go for a pint"
Your getting some for free for doing something you usually do!
Do you really think the high paid proffesional marketing section of a multion billion £ company would come up with this as a way to get people to change where they shop.
Most people i know shop in tesco, so its a good "offer" for them.
If i knew a single person who changed where they shopped just to get a free apple - do you know what i'd do? slap them up the head and tell them to sort there lives out.
I am 30 year old though.
Seriously.
I have three kids anyway. That's how I've learnt to hate them.
I will try this and if there is any problems, I'll just say I thought this offer was nationwide.
For your information I can well afford to shop in Tesco, I just choose not to.
Staphylococcal . ...Scratch..scratch mmm those look nice.
Prediction. Over the tannoy in Tesco...
'Please would the contract cleaner go to isle 3 to clear up.' Followed by 'Is there a doctor in the supermarket, an elderly gent has broken his leg ...slipped on banana skin.'
LOL
Tesco ploy. Won't work. Public think it's good intentioned healthy eating. No, it's a ploy. Wait and see.
Technically grapes aren't free in supermarkets, and I certainly wouldn't be giving a toddler grapes as a choking hazard.
Still, glad to see Tescos doing this. When we used to shop at Sainsburys, peas-in-pods were my kids' favourites and a handful would keep them occupied for most of the shopping trip. I don't remember ever paying for them either
Checkout staff regualr throw away my little ones apple core when I get to the til
can clearly only get a dog in his life lol
As usual.
always turning something positive into a negative.
Mental age = No
It is a crate of fresh whole fruits -apples/bananas/tangerines mainly, no cut or sliced stuff or grapes.
For the past decade Tesco has been ripping people off, e.g. putting apples in to fancy pack and trying to charge £3+ for 3 apples making it unaffordable for people to buy plentiful fruit & veg to eat at home.
Now they offer free fruit for kids...

It is clear that it is not a deal, but a freebie if there is no requirement to spend money - you are not obliged to spend money in tesco.
mike
mike
Regarding the washing though - you can't build up an immunity to the stuff they spray to make it last longer on the shelves.... I just took my lads apple to the parent and child room for a quick wash.
She said I was bananas, but I think she was just looking for a scapegoat.
The sickest kids I know are the cleanest ones.
Tesco = cold cold cold
Haha your kidding me right? and have everything off the shelves lol
Most people dont care about this. If you want you can buy fruits for your kids anyway(i would).
We want good deals instead where we can save money:-)
A dog will only urinate or defecate where it's trained to do so. You can't say the same about most children.
And if the kids weren't allowed in the store there wouldn't be food all over the floor for a dog to brush against.
It's the future I tell you.
Usually the fruit is not ripe, and the longer it stays it ripens and tastes better. So if they do wait until end date, it could be better...
I don't shop at Tesco, we have closer options that are better in my opinion.. The fruit is cheaper in the market and at Morissons, so I can afford to buy fruit for us to eat at home.
Is it a deal or a freebie ?
Of course it's a freebie, thanks for the effort op in posting.
