Sorry, being pedantic also but it's not 2 years old but only just 18 months, and in reality the 801 chipset is one of Qualcomm's greatest and if I were buying a phone for this price with an 801 chipset now I wouldn't be the slightest bit concerned. It's still very fast, doesn't consume too much juice and runs cool compared to the 805 & and 810. My Z3 which I bought on release day absolutely flies with it's Marshmallow update and has been solid as a rock. The Z3 is a truly great phone and never got the love it deserved. Still prefer it too to my G4, S6 and to a certain extent my 6P. Imho the only phone that can rival it at this price is the G4 and the build quality is not quite as good on the G4. This is a hot deal in my eyes.

Not to be pedantic but I guess I am being...released IN Sept 2014 so 18 months old from first release. Sony were bringing z our every 6 months up to the Z5. Just divorced my Z1 after a love hate relationship. Sony great at supporting android updates but quality of updates often resulted I need for patches which they were slow to respond to. Sony mobile forum is very active and a great place to see if this phones bugs have been sorted. Based on my Z1 experience this z3 will likely be in its prime...sweeeeet! Unfortunately I am already in a relationship with a cheap floosie of an LG G4...I need to get out more! Good deal OP.

Upgraded last August from a Sony Xepria T to Sony Z3 compact.

Best compact phone on the market imo. Just like everybody has said battery life is immense.
Also find the features especially the dlna feature excellent on their products. Stream a lot of films and TV shows through this feature , which works perfectly. Heat added.

Disappointed Sony are not continiueing this series. Hopefully they have something in the midst.

That length of time is a bit irrelevant. You could moan if it was a few months but phone prices dont hold for long. I paid £430 18 months ago for the Z3 which at the time was a stonking deal.

Looking to replace my Galaxy S5 as i hate it but have a year to go on my contract so was thinking about this for £244 or Moto X Play for about £200 after both codes and Quidco cashback, or something else in the same money region any thoughts people?
Rjm123 to nobbyal
4 Mar 16 #38
Ordered the Moto X Play yesterday through quidco with the codes so works out at under 200. That is incredible for the price. Great battery, gorgeous screen, pretty much stock android and great storage and performance with the marshmallow update. Can see a better phone out there for the price.

4 Mar 16 #36
Had mine 18 months and I still love it . Dont feel the need to upgrade at all unlike previous phones. Only charge it once a day sometimes less.
The usb port cover has just given up though as the rubber seal around it has broken ( common fault). So its a case of getting a 3rd party replacement cover otherwise you have to send the whole phone back to sony for repair.

I would never recommend a Sony product, their products are ok but their customer service is atrocious, much better manufacturers around who provide superior products and superior customer service.
Supatramp to capelli
4 Mar 16 1 #35
Lol, there's always got to be one, supposedly all-knowing but fails to actually detail the superior manufacturers and products. We're all just dying to know, well not me actually, I'm perfectly happy with my Z3 Compact.
ICTHUS
4 Mar 16 #20
Perhaps because you can get the Z5 for £130 more then people think this is a bad deal.
It is a good deal for a Z3, and put a cover on it so the white case doesn't matter.
The Xperia phones are really great. My Z1 is 2 years old and still perfectly good.
Andybro to ICTHUS
4 Mar 16 #32
Now don't go ruining things by bringing in the Z1. One word...camera...arrghhh! But the battery life was sublime and the magnetic charger brilliant. I see people complain about the lack of magnetic charger on the Z5, removed as there was no need for a flap over the usb port.
e_munky
4 Mar 16 #31
Really like the video editing app and Album. Comparing the Sony apps with my wife's S6, the Samsung apps are marginally better but consume so much resource it's crazy!
e_munky
4 Mar 16 #29
I have had this phone since launch, it's solid as a rock, fast and stable - the battery is ridiculous also! It's got to the point where I can;t consider any other phone out there because no one beats the Z3 on real-world battery performance. The waterproof and magnetic charger features as well as near-vanilla android are also pluses for me.
Only downside for me is the camera is not so great in low light and the speakers are far too quiet, but I can live without it. Have been tempted by the Note 4 for the stylus but i remmeber how much i hated the bloat on my S3 whcih eventually brought the Samsung to a crawl, something I havn;t seen with my Z3 after 18 months.

I have this phone and haven't been remotely tempted to upgrade by the current flagship phones, camera is spot on and its snappy to use. Front facing speakers make it a decent sat nav too.
ipswich78
4 Mar 16 2 #27
Again your naivety is showing - but I don't believe you are being serious...

You and I both know phone companies release umpteen updates to A, keep up with their competitors and B, because people all want the newest and shiniest smartphone (and there is NOTHING wrong with that - it is consumerism).

If you look at any Smartphone nowadays most 'new' versions are incremental updates. How often is the most recent phone a must have from its predecessor?

You are indeed correct Sony has said that they will be no longer making a phone in the 'Z' series. But this will be superseded by a new 'family' so not sure what relevance this has?
Optom
4 Mar 16 #26
Great phone. I've had it since October 2014. Runs smooth. I bought LG G4 last December and returned it because it didn't feel any faster and battery life was terrible compared to this.

For 16 OR 32 this is still a very good price. The camera is incredible on this series.
octopus
4 Mar 16 #24
Perhaps you should take your views to Sony executives? If this is as good a phone as you make it out to be, then why did they keep releasing new versions every 6 months? And according to the latest news the Z series is dead.

I have a z2 and Z3 Compact, both great devices, I do recommend the Sony NC headphones for these phones (and the z3) , which can probably be gotten cheaper now. (Mine came free with my z2).
I was pretty impressed with them.
634miyamoto
4 Mar 16 1 #18
I agree with you with the "hype" bit BUT there is the practical matter of getting updates - manufacturers are less likely to roll out updates the older the phone. This matters not only from security perspective but a lot of apps don't support Android that is more than one generation behind. So effectively you get two years use less out of a two year old phone.

Love my Z3 Compact, have not felt the need to change since I bought it. Even with the headphone port knackered I still can't part with it. If I remember rightly the Z3+ had issues with overheating (perhaps fixed with a firmware update?) and the Z5 was not much of a step up from this apart from removing the port flaps, which doesn't bother me as I invested in magnetic chargers

Too right, especially if you do not use your phone for gaming...and really with the majority of phone games being gash you hardly need the latest greatest quadcore processor for the average users addiction to Candy Crush Saga...and exactly how much multitasking is done on a phone.

A few extra PPI here, a slight tweak of camera megapixels there, a few mhz clock speed increase here, upping the cores there, stopping future OS releases....all done to get more money from the consumer.

It is no wonder the ereader market has all but stopped, there was nowhere to take it or for that matter to convince the consumer they need to change their device every 2 years.

Ahhhh I'd love to be this naive about things and believe all the marketing gumpf that gets thrown at us.

The vast majority of Smartphones are massively over powered for the average users needs. People believe that they need the latest and greatest but in reality they 'want' rather than need. There is nothing wrong with that, but in the words of Public Enemy "don't believe the hype'.

still outperforms alot of current chips. faster than the octocore cpus. the is a reason why Qualcomm is returning to 4 cores instead of 8.
2.5ghz, not much faster clock speeds than that in current flagship phones.

cpu speed in any flagship phone from the last 2, maybe 3 years is enough to do everything easily without lag. battery life is now the weak point of most phones and the Z series is one of the best phones for battery life.

£244 is a good price.

Great phone, get it and sign up for the Sony Concept Software programme and you can update it to virtually a vanilla version of the latest Android os.

Best battery I have ever had on a Smartphone. Tempted to upgrade but nothing out there really jumps out at me with the exception of the Nexus 6P.
