Well, seeing as the 3DS doesn't have GBA games in the VC, if Yoshi's Island does come, it would need to be the SNES version... but that in itself is exactly why it seems doubtful. :disappointed: I've no idea what the reason would be for the game's absence, though.

Maybe if these are being surfaced as 'pixel-perfect' they might use the original?...

I heated this because if it's a good deal if you want these games to play on your new 3DS and are not someone who has them on cartridge, emulator, Wii, Wii U, GBA, PSP, raspberry pi. £7 odd. Awesome. Metroid. Now hopefully they will release the legendary yoshi's island too.

...which, somehow, still isn't available as the SNES release on the Wii U VC (the available version is the GBA re-release).

Nintendo's marketing for the handhelds is impeccable. No hardware update but incentivise it by dumbing down older consoles in favour of the new one. And people then buy the new one. First class.

I assume that's a mistake since half of £7.19 isn't £2.69

Also title could be misleading since its only half price if you buy a full price game

I assume, in this case, Nintendo realised that the order you bought them in would affect the final price (it would have been cheaper to buy SMW and get Earthbound half price than the other way round), so they lowered the offer price of SMW to make the two the same.
antray1984 to Lomi
4 Mar 16 #62
the deal has to be set this way as earthbound is more exspensive then the other proposed snes releases. so it has to be ordered in a way that weather you get earthbound or mario 1st, the second games discount price will add up to the same overall value. fot example earthbound is more exspesnive so without the adjustment in place it would always be better to buy it as the half priced game as half of £9 is gonna be a bigger saving then half of £7.19
luckysalt1 to Lomi
7 Mar 16 #91
Its so both ways it works out at £11.68 for both games no matter which way round you buy.

If you buy all 8 of these SNES games in this deal it works out at £44.02.

Which for 25 year old games, is still making Nintendo a **** load of money.

I'm not talking about sharing the game with four people.
I'm on about being able to log in on another device and playing my games like I can with my PSN and Xbox ID.

I've got two 360s in my house and I can use whichever one I want at any time and play my games with no trouble.

I can also let the kids play my games on their accounts on the Xbox and Playstation.

Nintendo make great first party titles, but their consoles and ways are a bit behind the times. I wasn't comparing the PC to the Wii U, merely stating that's my main choice of gaming.

I own a Wii U, like I said, it's great for first party titles but that's about it. I just wish their online and virtual console was better. Unfortunately I'm sure Nintendo will continue to milk the consumer with the NX by re-releasing virtual console games you'll have to pay for yet again.

'New' 3DS to run 20yr old 16-bit games. Disgraceful marketing. No wonder Ninty is trailing these days
pazuzu17 to Brevster
5 Mar 16 #87
Nintendo are "trailing" only in sales, yes, a big area if you are a shareholder but not everybody is (thank God) ONLY interested in the numbers game. Trends have changed. Chavs covet both PS4 and/or XB1 because how they are marketed and the promise of more 'mature' titles...the majority of which as mature as a QT movie.
pazuzu17
5 Mar 16 #86
I dont think you can compare a PC with (for example) a Wii U. Totally different hardware, games, market. Also, Nintendo can continue to "thrive off" me just as long as they keep up with offering AAA the likes of which are unavailable any place else. No developer is 'perfect' - I just find (for me) Nintendo are the closest.
PLEYOR
5 Mar 16 #85
You complain about Nintendo's lack of cross buy, and you're still willing to buy their newest rip off console. It's people like yourself who Nintendo thrive off of, they won't make it past the next generation if they don't get with the times.

PS4 has been awesome for me, but PC is where it's at.
pazuzu17
5 Mar 16 1 #83
I don't know "scam". Archaic maybe...

I'm almost certain to buy the NX - whatever it is - day 1. Say what you will about Nintendo, its pros FAR outweigh any of its cons. My PS4 has been used more thus far as a catch up player than an actual GAMES machine. Fact.
pazuzu17
4 Mar 16 #9
Disappointed owning as I do SMW (Wii U) via the Virtual Console I cant simply add it to my New 3DS for 'free', but, count me in for Earthbound, ALTTP, Super Metroid, F-Zero, SMK and (perhaps) at least one of the DK Country games...

For those who claim Nintendo's library is lacking in some department, I'm finding it tricky to keep up with everything in my (growing) library.
PLEYOR to pazuzu17
5 Mar 16 #82
Because Nintendo milk the hell out of their followers. I doubt I'll buy the NX, they are so far behind in the times compared to Sony and MS.

Edit: Why couldn't this be released on standard 3DS systems, seems like a scam to make people 'upgrade' to the n3DS.

It seems that you are the one not taking it in as you are talking about something I'm not even complaining about.
The problem isn't one purchase for one ID, it's not allowing you to use your ID on more than one device.

If I purchase four Playstation 4s/XB1s/Playstation 3s/XBOX 360s/PCs I can play all games I own on all machines by logging in on each of them.
If I purchase four Nintendo 3DS' I should be able to log in on each of them and play the games I own.

If you think that is nonsense then fair enough, that's your prerogative, I'm just glad it's only you and Nintendo who think that way.

Oh and it's 'waste' not 'waist'.

no offence taken. Your talking nonsense so I'm just humouring you. Your not taking it in, one purchase for one id. Lifes tough I know. I recommend you don't purchase these games so you subsequently cant complain and I don't have to waist time "helping" you. Have a great summer.

4 Mar 16 #72
I think they've took the **** with this in three ways. only "supported" by new 3ds, no cross buy with Wii U and charging £7.19 for its 5th release. It also drives me bananas how you can't full screen/stretch these roms if you so wish. I love the game but this takes the ****. (that said, i will buy it if it's ever stand alone for less than a fiver lol)
wezlyons
4 Mar 16 1 #71
No offence but that's a load of rubbish

If that's what would happen then why do Sony and Microsoft allow it, surely everyone would just share the same id and only 1 copy of each game would get sold eh?

Restricting my Nintendo Id to one device is a ridiculous practise no matter how much you try to justify it.
I should be allowed to log in on any of the 3DS' I own and play my games.

Nintendo's policy of not having cross buy is bad, even worse is their ridiculous policy of not allowing you to log in on multiple systems with the same account.

I've got 4 3DS' in my house, one for me and one each for the kids.
It's an absolute joke that if I buy a game on my 3DS from the nintendoshop , I can't download the game onto each of the other 3DSs' I own.

I don't know much about it, but I've read elsewhere that someone has run one of these new VC downloads on a N3DS that's been made to run at O3DS speeds, the performance is poor. I've also read that SNES emulators on hacked 3DS units are also poor performing. All hearsay, but people seem to be making a lot of assumption about emulation, which is notoriously underestimated in its difficulty to pull off smoothly.

4 Mar 16 #58
I don't want to be 'that' guy, but why would anyone pay so much for an ancient game, when you can easily get an emulator instead?

The retro scene is great, but not at those prices. Nintendo should let their loyal user base download old ROMs for free.
SVRich
4 Mar 16 #57
I would be surprised if it was a hardware issue, I can't imagine SNES emulation is that taxing but I suppose it is possible. I think though it is more an attempt to give the New3DS a unique selling point.
terry's june
4 Mar 16 #56
How do you know there aren't legitimate technical reasons for not making these games available on the original 3DS?

As you say, there's probably not many people who would upgrade purely because of this latest development (though it might push some fence-sitters) - so why have Nintendo done it if it's so obviously not going to impact sales much? Do you think Nintendo is blind to this rather predictable reaction from original 3DS owners? If Nintendo is not blind to it, then the only logical conclusion is that it's a decision made deliberately to annoy people, or because they were technically restricted by the hardware.
terry's june
4 Mar 16 1 #55
Nintendo's practices over the short number of years I've been paying attention to them are often not entirely in keeping with 'keep the customer happy'. Nintendo clearly likes to try and manage the ongoing value of its IP. Sure, it could probably give us every game it's ever made bar Wii/U games on the 3DS VC, but once they're out there, that's it, and it's harder to continue leveraging the value of the IP after that - the bolt has been shot. By restricting the supply, it hopes to retain interest and value and maintain control of the IP over the longer term.

And besides, no-one here actually knows whether the original 3DS can perform SNES emulation sufficiently well. Nintendo has certainly not announced a reason why these SNES games haven't come to 3DS - could be tactical, could be technical.

I never had a 3DS before I got my N3DS, but having had both of them in my hands since, I would have had no qualms about selling my 3DS and upgrading to a N3DS. It's just an all-round better product, and being that much newer one would hope I'd be extending the working life of my ownership of the system. At launch you could probably have upgraded for not much more than £50, which is not much if you get 5-10 years life out of it.
terry's june
4 Mar 16 #45
Let's imagine we're all games hardware producers...

So we have N stock of our new product, but have only sold 20% of that stock. Let's think of some initiatives that could increase sales without us having to cut prices and sacrifice revenue.

Clearly all you business experts in here have a better idea than providing exclusive content that can't be run on existing hardware.

Let's hear them.
RebTheRebel to terry's june
4 Mar 16 #51
Don't know if this was in regards to my statement or not, but I'll reiterate.

If, as you state, Nintendo haven't sold many of these 'New' units, as sales suggest. Then I'm under no dillusion that they need a way to get those sales moving. Won't argue with that, I'm 100% in agreement with you.
It's up to Nintendo to get their sales moving, and it's up to the consumer to decide if those sales ideas are suitable to them as an individual. Not as a group, a family, a nation, just if that business idea suites you as the individual consumer.
As I stated, I won't be buying a NEW model. Maybe biting off my nose to spite my face, but whilst I appreciate business decisions have to be made, it's always imperative to keep those loyal customers happy, to a degree, whatever your business is. Personally, as someone who's worked in the business sector for nearly 20 years, I don't think this is the best business sense from Nintendo, nor do I think it's nearly the worst either though. But it doesn't make this the right one. They won't lose sleep from me not buying, and it's totally within there rights as a company who have spent several hundred millions on developing and thousands upon thousands of hours sweating to bring the best product they can to the table. I'm not questioning there hardwork. I'm saying this as a "Keep the customer happy" decision, isn't the best option they could have made.

Edit: I also voted this deal hot, because if you already own the New model, it's a good deal.
SVRich to terry's june
4 Mar 16 #54
I would be amazed if anyone would buy a New 3DS just because you can now play SNES games on it but surely there is something to be said for not upsetting your existing customers as they are more likely to be the early adopters of any of your new products, if they see that rushing out to buy your product on launch will down the line get you a machine that won't support all the software released they may think twice about that in the future. And also factor in those who are less gaming savvy who bought an old 3DS just before the new one was released as they didn't know a new one was coming, they might fell pretty annoyed, and rightly so imo. I could slightly understand it more if there was an actual reason such as needing the extra power but there isn't, it is just a cynical ploy to flog a ailing hardware revision that I would be amazed if it shifted many more units.

Obviously it is up to them but people are allowed to voice there annoyance.

I can't work out if adding these to the New 3DS only is a bad business decision or a good one. To be honest, as it stands I think it's a massive balls up. People vote with their wallets and maybe it is spitting the dummy out of the pram, but any thoughts about upgrading to the new console has seriously receded by this decision to block out original 3DS owners to run software we are already aware that the console can run, even without an update. Couple of my mates have said the same and forums seem to suggest this too. I thought about getting one, but I'm not going to bother now. This is pi$$ing down your loyal fan base throat to shift a console you added a few additions to. As for having to rebuy said titles if you already own the exact ROM for the WiiU, well that's as big a two fingers up as any. So, some say it's a good business decision which is fine. But from my wallets perspective, big balls up there Nintendo. Big balls up. I know Nintendo won't lose sleep from me not upgrading, but point still stands. I shall ride on out into the sunset with my trusty 'ORIGINAL' 3DS and his friend the circle pad pro.

The New 3DS is the one that has better 3D and the C stick near the X button. The picture below shows the difference. The one on the left is the New 3DS and the one on the right is the original one. So if your sons looks like the one on the right (only bigger screen) then it would be the original one

They're not going to because they expect you to buy them again (and they expect people will).

You can also expect to see article online saying you shouldn't feel 'entitiled' to cross by despite the emulator being the only difference between the two versions.

Personally, one of the reasons I don't generally buy Nintendo DD is because of a lack of cross-buy (the other being their awful DRM), so if money is what they want, money isn't what they're going to get from me unless they're going dirt cheap like Super Metroid was when I first got my Wii U.
