My Sky HD box is on its way out (keeps freezing) and I phoned Sky who wanted to reset/update/reboot box etc. I explained I do all that regularly but it keeps freezing and I can hear the hard drive and I know it will fail soon (happened before). I was given the options of having an engineer visit (£65 call out fee then having to pay for a new box). I then asked just for the price of a new box which was quoted as £400 for the best 2TB box (built-in wireless etc.). I asked for other options and was then offered the same 2TB box for just £30 but a refurbished one (good as new). This seems to be an outstanding deal! My current box was a refurbed one and has lasted since 2010 and seemed just like new. Quite a bit cheaper than upgrading to Sky Q which is the same content just a fancy front-end!
This is a replacement and old box will be taken away by engineer

Cold !! Sky should provide this equipment for free. Virgin Media do. Sky charge enough for the packages and as I pointed out to Sky you cant use the service with out them. If you say you will cancel and they will put you through to retention's who will eventually give you it for free.
All the time people are mug enough to pay sky for routers or boxes when they go wrong they will keep charging.

You don't have to have Sky broadband, but you do need movies or sports for them to add this offer, however, they offered me movies half price for 6 months, but then said after the order was placed I could cancel movies immediately, which I have done, so I just pay the 1 month (30 days cancellation notice) for movies at half price, £8.50, in order to get the Sky Q offer.

I was with Sky nearly 10 years with no discounts and they wanted £150 for a new box (our old one caught fire in the middle of the day), with 10% off monthly fees and another year's commitment. We just have Freesat and NOW TV now, they just couldn't have cared less ... but they've rang a few times over the last few weeks. They'd have to include a French maid and a massive discount as part of the monthly subscriptions to get me back!

ANYONE that pays anything for a sky box at anytime is mental, same with these ridiculous subscription prices. I've been with virgin for a long time but have been forced to go back to sky due to a recent move. This time round I've managed to get a sky+ HD box, the family pack, unlimited broadband, and line rental for £16.31 a month.
If after 12 months I have a problem with the box, it'll get replaced or I'll cancel. Like someone else has said, you cancel and within a week sky will be ringing you to offer all sorts for next to nothing.

3 Apr 161#60
The deals have actually gotten better in my experience, because the competition is so fierce.
Just over 10 years ago there was no Virgin TV, BT Sport, there was no Netflix streaming, there was no Wuaki, Amazon prime, etc etc.
You negotiate with them and you go in and play hard ball, cancelling if necessary. They will ring you back with improved offers. They always do.
Jawz
3 Apr 16#61
Yeah that's what I did.
Unfortunately though I'm split with my services.
Sky - Full TV
BT - Phone and Internet
At some point I will try and merge as bouncing back n fourth gives good value with the TopCashback deals as normally offer around £200 for 'new customers'
I was only on Family bundle when I first joined but got all lot now (even though I never watch movies)
Just hope come September I can get a decent deal.
The Q looks OK and is marketed well. But ya don't really get much over standard. Features are OK but certainly not neccaserry to what's on screen.
Though I will still try to get it just for odd occasion feeling tired n finishing off a programme in bed.
Anyways hope the game continues.....off to celebrate the reds win athe Wembley:o)

I have VM broadband, which is ridiculously fast. I get 230 down, 13 up.
We have VM TV and Phone. And Sky TV. Missus hates Sky (thinks they are greedy) and to spite me ordered VM TV in 2 rooms  [Even though we have Sky for TV, and VM for broadband]
I was wary about VM for TV (I love Sky football in HD on my Plasma) and didn't think Virgin medias picture was good on the last Virgin box I had 8 years ago. I want the best, not the cheapest. Anyway, I can't tell now side by side with Sky or Virgin for HD now I have the TiVo box.
But VM newer boxes are good. Silent almost, versus the whirring a Sky box makes. We've had 2 Sky boxes fail.
And...
Sky make you pay for their boxes, whereas the VM ones are free!?
How do Sky get away with charging, when VM are free? I'm thinking of ditching Sky altogether, now my confidence is high with the Cisco Tivo Virgin boxes we have.
Not sure what Sky Q really gives you? Other than the ability to "stream" to other rooms without running Sat cable I presume?
But you are being charged for the privilege 12.50 a month? Is that for multiple boxes, a single 12.50, or is it 12.50 _per room_?
There probably some logic I need to get my head around :/

I took up BT fibre last year because they offered me all the sport chucked in which I wanted, and a £125 prepaid credit card which was basically free money back you could use for anything. Sky offered me credit for the BT sports channels as I talked to them, but then I said about this card and they couldn't match it. So BT it was.
When you ring sky, let them give you the offers, if they aren't good enough then just maintain you want to cancel because they aren't, too expensive. BT TV have this and that. Virgin have this and that. I'll use netflix more. Also because I have the sports, I timed my subscription to end at the end of the football season here. Then it's dead easy to turn around and hit them with - "yeah, but there isn't any football for 3 months, the Euros/World Cup is free" blah blah :stuck_out_tongue: this is a perfect time to snag a deal as they no doubt have countless people also pulling the plug at this time of year.
It really helps to know the prices and deals from the other offerings, because they often ask you to try and match or incentivise. Just have the balls and cancel, you'll get called back with much better offers long before the final month and cancellation goes through :stuck_out_tongue: trust me.

Personally wouldn't trust a refurb of the *slim* boxes as they seem to have issues with the fans and get roasting hot on the top which leads to premature failure. But at least Sky are selling them for £30 rather than making you pay £65 for an engineer visit who then gives you a refurbished box.
I bought myself a used 250GB box from a boot sale for £10, put in a Noctua fan connected to the molex power connector so it's on permanently (using the ULN adapter so silent), stuck in a 2TB WD Purple drive - Been going almost a year now without troubles and cool to touch.

4 Apr 16#89
I can only repeat what others have said about SKY they will do almost anything to keep you as a customer. Every time they have attempted a price increase i have managed to get a decrease instead. The last time it went right down to the wire i gave a months notice and resisted every deal they offered i told them i would pay no more than #15 a month for their basic package . My contract was due to end on Monday and i was starting to feel the pressure as the missus was stressing about losing the sky + recordings etc
I was dreading having to phone them back and having to ask to cancel my cancellation but then i had a call from them on Tuesday last week asking why i was leaving , i told them it was down to cost and they said can we see what we can do . After a couple of offers similar to what i had already turned down they came up with an offer of #14 a month and a #50 credit on the account on a 9 month contract . I agreed to this !
From previous experiences of dealing with them i would give the following advice :
Look up their previous profits and ask why after they have made eg #600m profit are they asking me for an increase
Why are they asking normal customers to subsidise their billion pounds investment in football coverage
Why are they expecting normal customers to subsidise their free broadband offers
Be polite and firm and quote facts as above and you will probably get a discount.

Yeah I wanted VM when I was comparing the Big 3. Unfortunately VM isn't available at my house as it was built after the rest so miss out by about 30meters.
I was all in with BT un till out of contract but heard loads of poor reports about Sky'sports Internet and saw a good introduction deal through Topcashback that made Sky Family the same price I was paying for BT TV.
That's where I have put myself today which is split providers.
Renewed Sky and held off with BT Fibre renewals whilst I waited to see what Sky Q offered. Saw the price and decided to stick with BT as out of contract was costing a lot so renewed.
So to cut the waffle.
I'm now not only split (BT Phone Internet, Sky TV) I'm also out of sync with my renewal dates :o)

4 Apr 16#100
Nope, you have bought the box or it has been given to you for free, the contract is a different matter. The box when new has a 12 month warranty which is just as long as the contract is with Sky, after that you can cancel at any moment giving 30 days notice. The problem arises when you're out of contract and the box fails, that's when you have a fight with Sky as to who is going to pay for the box swapping (they don't repair them on site) if you wish to stay with them.
Billythebubble
4 Apr 161#101

Tried asking for a reduction and threatening to cancel a few times over the years but I guess because they were the only game in town with no Virgin here they knew they had us over a barrel. Phoned for my cousin who does have Virgin available and got a cheaper price straight away.
I did get them to agree to a cheaper price when HD sky+ had been available for a while and I switched to a hd box but that was by dropping the sports channels and they actually billed more than agreed. What a hassle that was with them denying the deal and coming up with numerous stories.
TBH I wouldn't go back to them if they paid me now.

The delivery guy never came back to collect it. I think he wanted to take it for himself.

I just signed up for a 12 month contract extension. Sods law, my 3 year old Sky+HD box is starting to freeze. I think its a 500GB box.
What options do you guys think I have. I could do with a newer box

you can take the hard drive out and put it into a pc then put a smaller drive back in but need to Google how to put the software on the drive I have bought loads of second hand boxes with 500gb drives for £5 to put in a pc to sell.

They never made that clear to me and as I have a box full of recordings I told my wife to reject the delivery, spoke to Sky about it and said they was nothing they could do as I asked if I could keep it for a month to allow me to copy stuff off but no couldn't manage that!
So you will need to give them your SKY viewing card number that is linked to a 2TB box.
Pay £30.30 for full package.
Just hope come September I can get similar deal. But with introduction of Q I am wondering if deals won't be so great anymore.

If after 12 months I have a problem with the box, it'll get replaced or I'll cancel. Like someone else has said, you cancel and within a week sky will be ringing you to offer all sorts for next to nothing.
Is it a 3.5" or 2.5" drive inside?
I'm happy to say that I don't use Kodi/Ruya and also happy to say I don't pay SKY for TV only broadband.
I bought myself a used 250GB box from a boot sale for £10, put in a Noctua fan connected to the molex power connector so it's on permanently (using the ULN adapter so silent), stuck in a 2TB WD Purple drive - Been going almost a year now without troubles and cool to touch.
They are surprisingly easy to get open for anybody used to working on computers.
Will be moving over in a heartbeat. No huge complaints about Sky's service, but I'm not funding the EPL any longer. The money they are spending is stupid.
I'd be interested to hear more about people's experiences when trying to get this deal and what equipment they previously had
I know I could just swap out the previous hard disk with a suitable 2Tb one (which I already have) & use ExPVR, etc (but I'm too lazy & probably afraid I'll get it wrong!).
