Cooling the bores? If it is getting into the bore the piston rings are not sealing (and your bores will be glazed in no time) if it is not then it won't be consumed. Sounds like an excuse for poor engineering too me.
The coolant (the clue is in the name) cools the engine, any cooling effect the oil has is negligible - its there to lubricate the crank, con rods and pistons.

Thanks, was after some oil. Not the one you listed but got another one for a different make using same code
I think the code marchmad gives 15% of everything.

Great, thanks
Reserved three. As unfortunately my Mini Cooper S loves to eat oil. Apparently they are allowed to eat up to 1 litre for every 1000 miles. Used for cooling the bores.
Time to leave Castrol Edge and move to Shell Helix. I think that's what the local Mini franchise has in the barrels anyway.

I wouldn't worry too much if I were you, most manufactures (of oil) will have you believe that each type of oil is for a diff. car.
I've seen oil tankers turn up at diff garages BMW, Ford, Vauxhall etc and the same oil dispensed to each supplier (in large container tanks - oil for your service) yet say it's manufacturer specific !!
At the end of the day (within reason) oil is a lubricant and all the variants will do for most engines.

Tyranicus66 - Yes, it's designed to. It squirts a bit in to cool the engine. Cooper S specific

Don't believe it!! The dealer is fobbing you off. There is NO good reason to get oil in the cylinders. It will glaze the cylinder, reduce efficiency, smoke, consume oil and in time ruin the intake valves. It turns out the engine they use in your car is poorly designed, it allows oil from the crankcase into the inlet manifold.
So would this oil be suitable for a 330i petrol? Or would I have to fork out the extra "BMW tax" to get the BMW version.
I'm not interested if it's long life, I change my oil every year.

This may be suitable if you require BMW LL04 spec oil
my handbook specifies ll04 oil (Diesel car)- but also says you can use ll01 if 04 is not available , unfortunately it does not tell you why 04 is better and why it's preferred - but as the DPF costs over £1000 I only use ll04 to be safe even though like you I change my oil yearly (oil filter every two/ might go to 3 years this time (or 30000 miles)) - I got the ebay edge deal 2x4l for £50

Nowhere does it say don't get this deal (Shell oil) but instead wait for the Halfords deal.

I am trying to help you. The oil spray jets that moisten the piston crowns with engine oil will use a tiny tiny amount of oil. The real reason for high oil consumption is oil entering the intake manifold from the crank case. If you don't want to easily and cheaply fix this then keep buying oil at 1 litre per 1000miles (which is more than my 40 year old 5.3 V12 Jag)

Consuming that much oil is extremely bad. That engine will not last anywhere near as long as it should for the reasons mentioned by Tyranicus66.
I wouldn't recommend the fix though - the PCV is there to allow the engine to 'breathe'. It's there for a reason and blocking it could do more harm than good.
If I were you, I'd sell the massive-on-the-outside-tiny-on-the-inside poorly made BMW and get something much better made and reliable. Perhaps a Audi A1 or Toyota Aygo.
Lando
5 Mar 16#43
I believe the fix you found is for the N16 engine, not the N18. Mine might use more than the average for cooling as it does a lot of starting and stopping on a daily basis.
I have a lot of trust in the one guy at mini that I let work on my car, he knows my classic mini knowledge, I don't need to brag but I know my stuff. Plus he has saved me a lot of money over the years!
If you can find a fix to suit an N18 I'm all ears :-)
However I have a bigger problem at the moment, blue smokeeeeeeee ! Arggghhh

5 Mar 16#44
I could see myself maybe in an S1 (what's the output?) but a Toyota Aygo!?! Noooooo that will never take roundabouts, have anywhere near the power, or do my business justice.
I actually like the build on the mini (though not a true mini)

The more ironic point is that both are models that use oil! Not as much as yours mind. You can scare your self silly in an aygo. Julian's C1 GTi (essentally same as aygo) did (RIP) 0-60 in 8.65sec in a car that is about the size and weight of a coke can!

My thought exactly :-(
I need to get a couple of video clips of the blue smoke first as then it can be done on warranty.
Generally does it when it's had a gentle lesson. Left on tick over for the debrief then as I touch the gas to pull off a cloud fills the rear window.

You getting your work done at Sytner. Good luck with that! But as its under warranty I suppose you have little choice. But if you decide to keep it after warranty there is a wealth of knowledge on your door step (mechanics not technicians) you have Woodlinkin Citroen on the A610 or Prima Racing/Cituning at Basford which both have good internal knowledge of the Prince engine.
Anyway. This Shell oil is good I use it myself. Well I put it in my car!

6 Mar 16#54
Does anyone know the difference between the AM and AF version? The euro car parts is AF but the shell lube checker is saying AM-L. Guessing the L means long life, which makes no odds to me as its never in long enough.

F=Ford. M=Merc/BMW R=Renault H=Hyundai P=Peugeot/Citroen V=VW and G=GM so Vauxhall.

Think the S1 is about 230bhp. The Aygo is still a much better car than the Mini but they don't do a performance version.
The build on a mini is pretty good, as with any BMW, but it's just so badly designed. Classic Mini or nothing!

I was thinking the same code wise.
Spoke to Shell earlier and they don't recommend the AF for BMW/Mini as it doesn't meet the minimum specification.
So cancelled my order. Looks like I'll stick with Castrol Edge for now as the Shell AM version is even more than Castrol.
