Very low cost colour networked and duplex laser printer. Works with most versions of Windows and Mac OS.

Up to 16 pages per minute print speed
Up to 2400 x 600 dpi Print Resolution
64MB Memory
Automatic Duplex (60-90 gsm)
USB & Network
Ships with 1000 Sheet Starter Toners
2 Year Warranty

REFILL kits for the toner can be had for around £14 per colour (2000 page yield), or just under £50 for a set of 4.

Would be suitable for low volume printing, so if you're planning on printing a library, you will probably be better off looking for a printer with cheaper toners.

Compared to the good Dell printer deal that 'wishihadadonkey' posted, you would be on equal cost terms after two toner changes, but will have printed slightly more pages from this one. The Dell would be cheaper to run after that.

eBuyer have it in stock: http://www.ebuyer.com/718068-ricoh-aficio-sp-c250dnw-a4-wireless-colour-laser-printer-2-year-901630

I bought that exact one last week and it's been great. It's newer than the OP, and has Wireless printing (which I actually need, as printer is in a cupboard, not connected to the computer, and no ethernet nearby.)
It's also faster, higher resolution, and the starter toner cartridges are bigger (1,500 yield).

Toner does look expensive, though. Shall be going down the refill route.
But if it's anything like the Samsung B&W one it's just replaced, I'll only need new toner once in 7 years usage....

See my link above. That's the newer, wireless-enabled one.

I remember in the late 90's when my school got it's first colour laser printer, having cost over a grand (in 1998 money!).

The amazon reviews are pretty poor, but at 2p-4p per page you can't argue even if you don't refill it when you're done. It helps to justify the massive waste of energy and resources extracting the raw materials, creating the product then shipping it half way around the world.

but 2p per page!

I use burned Ricoh printers as toner in my own laser printers which I then spend energy grinding up and using as toner for my posh laser printer. I only use that printer to send letters to myself telling me what a cad I am. Whatcha gonna do tree hugger?

Is it easier to return to Tesco or Amazon and is it worth takin out the extra warranty with Tesco?
topss to sowotsdis
5 Mar 16 #18
All three links are for Box.co.uk (Amazon and Tesco are just the sellers marketplace) Amazon would probably be the better bet for returns in the very short term, but never had a problem with Box themselves either. After 30 days, it will be Ricoh who provide a 2 year warranty on the unit. Personally I wouldn't both with any extra paid for warranty. If a £40 printer lasts 2 years, that seems decent value to me.

Power consumption: Maximum 1.3 kW

Blimey, that's juicy!
pibpob to simate
5 Mar 16 #38
All laser printers are similar, because they contain a heater to melt the toner in order to fuse it to the paper. That consumption is only intermittent, though, even when printing continuously.
davidc to simate
5 Mar 16 #58
That's normal with modern lasers but no real problem, it's because they are traditionally measured by time to print first page from cold and so they want a large element to quickly get the fuser wire up to temp. It'll take that power for less than 30 seconds. However some office models do have high standby currents for similar reasons so worth checking - on the Dell stuff it's a setting you can change - most home users who pay for their own electric would prefer to wait a few seconds longer for the first page. And, this is another reason why you should never connect lasers to a UPS or any other sort of power regulator.

Any links for a cheap mono laser printer with toner replacement about a tenner?
topss to crazy786
5 Mar 16 #24
Cheapest mono laser I can find is another Ricoh one. The SP 201N at around £25. Toner REFILLS are around £15 on ebay. If you would prefer replacement toners rather than refills then the Brother HL-1110 at around £38.00 (Amazon) has compatibles available on ebay at 2 for £10. You'll need to search for the links, not on a PC at the moment.

Obviously running costs are all dependent on how much printing you need, the cheapest initial cost isn't always the cheapest to run.

Excellent, ordered one. Was looking for a colour laser after my faithful old Epson Stylus SX210 decided to pop a magenta cartridge such that everything is coming out a shade of blue/yellow and no amount of cleaning or new cartridges has made a difference. Time to retire it.

This is a bargain! Hope it performs well, and that service/returns are ok from Box via Amazon.

thanks for posting. i'd been after a colour laser printer for a while, and duplex and ethernet were two options i wanted in particular. i don't print much so my inkjet dries out. the only other feature i would have liked was a scanner but i'll use my old printer for that

i presume if i want to run off a load of black text only pages it won't use any of the colour ink, unlike older injets?

We have Ricoh printers in work (replacing older HP printers). Bits of plastic snap off, and it seems to "misfeed" at least a few times a day. When the paper runs a little low it will always misfeed until you top it up.... useless things IMO but it is a super cheap price. I'm still rocking my old Brother B/W laser printer that I have had for years, never had any problems. again just my view....

Can I buy this and buy just the black toner and just print black and white? For example, will it show a error if the colour toners are not put in?
topss to xlolomgx
5 Mar 16 #50
Why wouldn't you put the colour toners in? They will only be used if you print colour and unlike inkjets, they will not dry out over time. Plus you can always set it to print in monochrome only mode. But to specifically answer your question, no the printer will not work if you don't install all the toners.

Managed to get ~£6 off this printer with Flubit by putting the Tesco Direct URL through (could probably get a similar deal with the Amazon one). Couldn't resist at that price, though part of me wonders if I should have resisted as I had a Ricoh black and white laser printer and it was a total PITA, regular paper jams and eventually packed up altogether, luckily it was just within it's 1 year warranty and Tesco Direct took it back without a quibble, perhaps they had a lot of them back....

Still at this price got to be worth a shot. Will only get occasional use anyway for times I need colour as I have a HP black and white laser printer, for my day to day printing use, which is one of the best printers I owned, no paper jams, great quality even on dirt cheap toner and paper.

5 Mar 16 #52
While that may be correct, the contract is with the seller & under UK law it is the seller who is responsible for honouring the warranty, including paying for all costs involved (i.e. postage). I do agree about the extended warranty - £20 per year is fine. Then again, you could use consumer law to argue for 5-6 years coverage.
topss
5 Mar 16 #53
Yeah sure, but I've always found it easier to go direct to the manufacturer with items purchased over the internet, after all, most reseller's just acts as the middle man and tend to waste time, unless it's directly from places like Amazon or Supermarkets - both which have been in my experience exemplary for exchanges.

Have been thinking Colour Laser for ages as fed up with ink jets drying out between use and the proverbial blocked head - had 4 do this and probably printed less than 200 pages between ALL 4 together! Cheaper to bin and replace than buy parts.

Currently get occasional use of a HP 4600 colour at Uni which is older technology but the colours are always balanced and it just works when you want it! No faffing with carts and flushes...

I got a Ricoh printer, and agree that it's a total pile of carp. Lots of paper mis-feeds. Plus the drivers were extremely hard to install for some reason. Admittedly, it was pretty cheap, but really a bit of a disappointment even taking the low price point into account.

5 Mar 16 #76
Its cheap but at the same time its comes with its issues according to reviews and comments here. Its also look pretty huge and heavy at 23.8 kg. So although it's cheap, buying this for home use would be impractical and take up a lot of space.

You have to think about what you are going to print the most, for most people who only print the occasional document then a mono printer will serve you well. I personally have the Samsung M2022 Xpress Mono Laser Printer which has a newer model out for £39.99. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Samsung-SL-M2026-Mono-Laser-Printer/dp/B00YU62K3K/ its smaller and weighs just 5kg.

ST3123 to gsiastra
5 Mar 16 1 #87
Just keep making new demands, once they complete an offer you are allowed to make another demand. The price you get seems to be random and can vary up and down, sometimes I think filling in the little demographics panel might make a difference but not sure on that. Also never take the instant offer as this is always very low (typically 4% or less) always wait for the 'proper' offer or if you can't wait get the elite trial and you will get the proper offers through almost immediately...

About 50/50 I'd say (I get a lot through Flubit). It doesn't help it being the weekend as I have noticed orders through Flubit seem to make no progress on weekends, I know people would be off, but it seems like the whole company takes the weekend off, even demands, which I would think are automated anyway tend to take longer (no using points to speed them up).

So a fair chance they will come in on Monday, see a load of printer orders and cancel them all because it's more expensive 'now' but might squeek through, you never know. Mine is stuck on "processing" been that way for over 24 hours cos as I said, they just don't seem to have anyone in the office on weekends, they must be a VERY small operation or they really like their weekends off  ....

My Flubit order was delivered today too - order fulfilment by box.co.uk.

The printer is a sturdy beast, but I've yet to clear enough space on my desk to set it up and run a few test prints. Fortunately, I have a large desk!

My two arrived yesterday. Haven't had a chance to use it yet, so if anyone who has set one up could comment on the colour 'photo' printing quality, that would be good. Not expecting anything amazing compared to a decent inkjet on glossy paper, but would be good to get some feedback.

Printed on plain A4 and am pretty impressed, it's better than any regular colour laser I've seen before. Assuming it holds up for a few years I'll be very very pleased.

It's bonkersly heavy and quite large, but the print quality is fantastic. Drivers on cd worked fine on Windows 10. I've just connected directly to pc with usb cable as connecting to the router is probably beyond me and I don't fancy having this beast of a machine in the lounge! Instruction are limited, but hey it's printer and I've got it to print so job done! Thanks OP

If anyone can assist with an idiots guide for adding this to a home wifi network it would help.
I connected via Ethernet but when I search for the printer on the PC it is not seen, any ideas?
topss to gordy1
10 Mar 16 1 #146
Might be best to setup it up via usb to begin with. Also make sure that DHCP is selected in the printer settings from its panel.

There are two different Win 10 drivers. 32 bit and the 64 bit version. Did you use the correct one?
rustybin
10 Mar 16 #145
Not sure whether mine is faulty, but I've been trying to get it installed for the last hour with no luck. Windows 10. Says driver is missing.
rustybin
10 Mar 16 #147
How do I know which is which (they all seem to be 64bit).

There are 3 different drivers - do I need to install all three?
topss
10 Mar 16 2 #148
Are you using the supplied CD?

I downloaded the drivers from their site and didn't use the CD. I usually do that to make sure I get the latest drivers.

On the Ricoh site, there seems to be only two Win 10 drivers. Both are a different size (2,328 KB vs 2,352 KB), so I'm assuming they are actually different.

http://support.ricoh.com/bb/html/dr_ut_e/ra/model/spc240/spc240en.htm

The 'x64' one is the 64 bit one. You would need to check which version of Windows you have.
rustybin
10 Mar 16 #149
Thanks - I have the 64 bit version of windows and the driver is showing as being 64 bit. I think my printer must be faulty.
gordy1
10 Mar 16 #150
Thanks. For anyone else having issues.
As suggested here connect via USB and install drivers. Then connect via Ethernet.
For me I could not see it on the PC when searching for printers on Windows 10.
I logged onto the router and got the IP address for the printer from the router.
I went into advanced printer setup. Clicked on 'the printer I wanted isn't listed'.
Add the printer with the IP address from the router and this added the printer to the network
topss
10 Mar 16 1 #151
If it's all powering up and not showing any errors on it's LCD panel, the it's most likely a driver issue. Might be an idea to try testing it with another PC (laptop maybe?) before having to repack and send that monster back.
rustybin
10 Mar 16 1 #152
Finally got it working... Deleted everything and started again. Sorted the driver issues only to have the 'lever' error... Had to manually move it from the envelope preset to paper. Seems a very strange set up. Thanks for the advice.

Mine arrived this morning.

Connected it to the network and manually added to Printers in Windows 10 using the "Specify IP Address option". Then I chose to manually install the 64 Bit driver on the disk but no joy.

I then deleted the printer, downloaded the driver from the Ricoh website and reinstalled the printer (as above) but used the downloaded driver.

It is now up and running......

11 Mar 16 #155
Thanks - got this beast setup & too exhausted to find a CD drive now!

I can confirm that it does use about 1.1KW while warming up (checked via electric keypad meter). In powersaver mode, it uses next to nothing (so little that the energy scrooge is thinking of leaving it 'on')!!! Currently sitting at 0.1KW total load inc. fridge, mini PC & 40" telly - does that seem possible? I think my keypad is faulty!

The telly was displaying HUKD (I was typing on the mini PC via the telly). Good point about the fridge.

Win 10 64 Bit - Home Office - Setup Guide on Office/Home Network
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

How to set up your Ricoh as a networked printer.. this can get a little involved, so you might want to consider connecting using USB as that is the easiest option..

Still want to connect your new Ricoh to your network? Okay.. here we go then.. good luck

Scenario: Connecting your Ricoh to your home/small office network with ethernet cable and installing Ricoh driver onto Windows 10 (64 Bit in my case) PC/Laptop

Before starting - Download 1) Ricoh W10 (64 bit) DDST driver
AND 2) ICM Files

(See post #1 for download location)

These are zip files, so...
Suggest you create a folder on your Windows 10 'desktop' named Ricoh, then clicking on the two files downloaded above, change the 'unzip' location to be the Ricoh folder just created on your desktop by 'Browsing' to that location

Unzip both downloads into the Ricoh folder (or whatever you choose to call yours). You'll need these files later

1. Physically install printer (ie remove packing materials - shake cartridges (as advised) - connect mains power - connect printer network port to home hub using network cable

2. Open front of printer (catch on RH side). Ensure two blue levers at top of unit (fuser unit) are set to Paper position NOT envelope, else you'll get a red alert indicator and error message! :smirk:

3. Switch on printer (watch electricity meter spin round  ) - Check that Alert indicator is NOT on and display shows toner levels

4. Press 'Menu' button on printer (printer may warm up if not already warm) - when it displays 'Ready' ....

5. Press 'Menu' button - Press 'down' button 4 times to display 'Host Interface' - Press 'OK'
Press 'down' button 3 times to display 'Network Setting' - Press 'OK'
Press 'down' button 3 times to display 'IPv4 Config' - Press 'OK'
Press 'down' button 1 times to display IP Address' - Press 'OK'
Make a note of the IP address (mine is 192.168.1.58) Yours will be different - probably  You will need this later

6. Now - on your PC/Laptop/Tablet.. Click 'Start' - Select Settings - Click 'Devices' - Click 'Printers and Scanners'
This will list any printers/scanners already set up on your PC

7. Click 'Add a printer or scanner' and it will report 'Searching for printers or scanners' with a swirly thing swirling around - After several seconds to maybe a minute - Check for your new printer and it almost certainly WILL NOT be listed.. So click on 'The printer that I want isn't listed' - This brings up an 'add printer window'

8. In that window, click on 'Add a printer using a TCP/IP address or host name' - Click 'Next'

9. Leave device type as 'autodetect' - Enter the TCP/IP address from step 5 above into the 'Hostname or IP address' field. Let Windows set up the 'Port Name' field. Tick the 'Query the printer and automatically select the driver to use' box - Click 'Next'

10. Next the 'Add printer' will open a window to 'Install the printer driver' - Click 'Have Disk' - then browse the 'Ricoh' folder created above (after we downloaded the latest drivers) choosing the 64bit subfolder. Select the oemsetup.inf (in the DISK1 folder) file then click 'Open'
Back in the 'Install from Disk' window click 'OK' -
Next select RICOH as manufacturer then click 'Next'
Either accept the default printer name Ricoh Aficio SP C240DN DDST  or give your printer a friendly name.. Ricoh maybe? - Then click 'Next' and Windows will install the drivers...

11. At the Printer Sharing window choose 'Do not share this printer' (unless of course you wish to Windows share your printer.. but that's another can of worms.. so in a simple home environment or small office suggest you do NOT share the printer BUT follow this procedure on each PC/Laptop/Tablet/Smart fridge (only kidding there) - Now click 'Next'

12. Then in the next screen click 'Print a test page' and cross your fingers

If all of this worked, then you should get a test print.. so if you do then pat yourself on the back and pour a large beer and start enjoying your new Ricoh :sunglasses: ... Else read this again, and give it another go.

IMPORTANT NOTE: The printer default setting is to obtain a TCP/IP address using DHCP . I would suggest that most home users and small office users probably have their router set as their DHCP server. In this situation, the IP address shown in step 5 above would have been allocated by the router when you first connected your printer to your network and switched on the printer. Therefore it is a very good idea to log onto your router and setup a static address for your new printer. (Google how to do this as the method is different for different manufacturers.. the concepts are the same though..ie you set a static IP address dependant on your router's MAC address).

If you do not set up a static address for your printer, then if it is switched off, then it is probable that some other networked device joining your network (phone, tablet, PC, smart fridge, etc etc) to grab the address (from step 5) meaning that the next time you switch your printer on, it will obtain a different address meaning that your PC/Laptop will not be able to send stuff to your printer...

So long story, short - Set up a static IP address on your router for your printer - and use that in Steps 5 AND 9 above.

Finally, thanks OP for spotting this deal.

I gave up the static address bit a couple of years ago as recent routers are capable of giving the same IP address each time a connected device is switched on, either by default or by a setting.
topss to TheBiker
11 Mar 16 1 #165
I think that's what pileemhigh actually meant. DHCP on the printer and reserve the ip address in the router settings, rather than actually assign a static ip address in the printers settings.

12 Mar 16 #166
Yes, I meant exactly that.. Thanks for clarifying

Agreed - I would hope 149, but hard to know. In any case it has 2dp so 105W or 109W max. It was fluctuating between 0.09 and 0.10. At risk of sounding sad, switching the rocker off, checking, then switching off the plug & checking again seemed to confirm that rocker isolates it from mains - no need to switch off at plug.

If anyone is interested in being able to print to this wirelessly from an Android device, the official Ricoh app seems to be working, even though it is for its Multifunction devices.

RICOH Smart Device Print&Scan from the Play store.

Will only work if you have the printer setup via ethernet. You will need the printers IP address, which you enter into the apps device search menu.

Edit

Ethernet into your WiFi router or a connected switch.

Routers have the ability to assign IP address by DHCP not printers. I stick by my original post, my router assigns IP addresses (by DHCP) to everything on my network but because my router remembers previously assigned IP addresses it always gives those IP addresses again. Hence no need to give static IP addresses.

Useless.
3 failed delivery attempts. They will not leave with any of the other 38 flats here, with the concierge desk, in a safe place or provide any kind of premium upgrade.
3 blank cards left buy the courier over the space of a week. Avoid anyone who uses UKMail as a courier, they are useless unless you are happy to sit at home all day, every day, until your goods arrive.

Gave up today and got refunded by Amazon.

I have just gotten round to unpacking mine to test. I know the box is huge but I was expecting a lot of that to be just packaging, only it isn't, the printer is absolutely huge as well.

It does appear to work in that I got it to print a test page out ok. However, when first turned on and during and for a while after printing it is really noisy and after I printed just one page out it made the whole room very smelly, not sure what the smell is, not a burning smell, but definitely unpleasant, presumably the toner?

Is it normal for a printer like this to give off such a strong distinctive odour like this?

My room is only small so perhaps the confined space is making it worse?

I have used other laser printers and they do have maybe a little smell to them after printing but absolutely nothing like this!

Beginning to think I have made a (literally) enormous mistake here......
pibpob to ST3123
22 Mar 16 #181
Just give it a few goes and see if the smell diminishes.
ST3123
23 Mar 16 #182
I've run it a few more times and the smell seems to have diminished a bit now. The other issue I am finding though is that several programs, typically image editing programs including the Windows 10 Photos app, Windows Photo Viewer and Paint all crash when I try to open the print dialogue, making it impossible to print from them. Printing from a web browser is fine as is from Word.

I am only using a basic USB connection from PC to printer and just installed the drivers from the CD.

Can only guess it's an issue with the drivers though I don't know why they would work on some programs but not others?
topss to ST3123
23 Mar 16 #183
Always a better idea to use the latest drivers from the official websites.

I would say, uninstall and reinstall with the online drivers.

As for the smell, no idea. The two we purchased are working fine with no noticable smells or other issues. Are you sure you removed all/any of the plastic tabs/stickers as per the instructions?

New drivers from the Ricoh website should sort that out. Link on first comments page.

Can't make it work with Windows 8.1 :disappointed:
It prints test page but when I try to print anything (picture, document) I get a message: "printer settings user interface has stopped working".
I've installed drivers for 8.1 from Ricoh.
Works fine with laptop on Windows 7.
