It doesn't mention VR in the info and the lens in the pic isn't VR, I'd go in store if you can and see for yourself, they may have used a stock pic.

this is not the vr kit. I asked in store and they stopped retailing the vr kit before xmas

Gutted my son bought this on wednesday and there was no bag with it from currys. Looked online and theres one in next town to us. Is it possible to return to currys and buy from another branch?

Easiest way to return the item would be to buy the camera and case from the Currys in the next town, return to your local Currys with Wednesday's invoice and return the unopened camera you just purchased.

Make sure they will accept the return first of all, as unless you bought online they have no obligation to accept a return unless faulty.

Honestly, the bag is just fine. I've owned it for over 6 months and it seems OK.

Price is pretty much on the money

- the accessories give this the edge over others - own a D3100 and a D3200 so this has to be better ?!?

- another advantage of buying Nikon (or Canon) is that the lens mounts are substantially the same as the old 35mm jobs, although auto-exposure and auto focus almost certainly won't be compatible

-good if you happen to have some old "film" kit
- added advantage being the 35mm lenses give a longer equivalent focal length (a 70-210 appears 105-315)
- disadvantage if you're looking for wide angle, your 28 becomes almost "standard" 42mm)

If you want extra batteries, be aware (on D3100 and D3200, and so probably the D3300) it *may not* recognise it as being "genuine"
- I had to "flash" a patch on my cameras before it would use ones I'd bought on Fleabay, this will of course goose your warranty, but you'll pay a tenth of the cost for the pirate cells.

Nikon D80 used, about 100£ anywhere. Nikon 50mm F1.8 80£ new. Bonus: option to use any Af or AF-s lens. minus: no video (who ueses it anyway).

The trend we see in new Nikon bodies is dumbing down and adding useless features while they scrap compatibility with AF lens

Sorry i shouldnt have said its trash, i meant i wouldnt chase getting one returning kit just to get a deal with the bag. It is fine im sure, but a good camera bag has padding and a rain cover, the nikon bag a asthetically good and serves well as an none bulky carrier im sure.

Personally I would go for the Jessops deal, for another £10 you get the new af-p vr lens, as well as the nikon bag, spare battery and lens cleaning pen. Still a great price though!

i've used mpb.com several times to part exchange camera kit. The last time was ti PX a nikon D40 for a D3200 i was pleased with the price they offered for the D40 and with the D3200 i bought. They also paid for all courier costs.

I'm 99% sure that Nikons have an extended warranty as standard.

All goods sold EU has statutory 2 years warranty:
-1st year is manufacturers warranty
-2nd year sellers warranty

I've currently got a D5100. Worth upgrading to this? How useful is the guide mode for a newbie? I've bought books for my 5100 but I generally find easier to learn by doing than reading.

I don't see how this is an upgrade? More MP's? Who cares? the MP thing is a marketing ploy.

There's not much to gain really, image quality may be a bit better but you'd see a more pronounced difference by putting the money you'd spend upgrading into saving up for a new lens instead.

Yes you do get the extra 12 months with Nixon as long as you register within 30days of purchase. Just registered my sons.

The issue I have is that I'm still relatively inexperienced when it comes to cameras. I'm still on camera phone (albeit a rather good one). I do have a visual arts background having studied it at degree, but photography was not my specialism. I want to get much more into it as I'm frequently envious of all the excellent photos I keep seeing and want mine to look as good. As I say, I have books I use for my d5100 but I don't manage to retain the information I get them from easily. If guide mode is good for beginners to dslrs then that to me is worth the price as I don't tend to use my 5100 much as I get frustrated easily when I have no idea what the settings do or how much I need to adjust each one.

I've got this camera. You can't get better for the price.

Taking great photographs has very little to do with the camera and much more to do with the one holding it. I'd suggest you try one of the online photography courses (there's a few good ones to choose from and are in the region of £0 to £30) . I use both a dlsr (d3200 actually) and a point and shoot (Sony RX100) and some of my favorite shots are taken with the point and shoot because that's what I had on me at the time, a good photograph is more about good composition and interesting subject matter. I've seen pictures taken on iphones that have blown me away, I wouldn't up/down grade from a D5100 to a D3300 personally.

Why are people getting this and not the Jessops deal?! I'm wanting to buy but, Jessops appears a better price. £289 with a VR lens.

Good question I'm looking at buying the d3300 too just seems so much confusion with the lens and which one is the best!

Frequently have I taken really well composed shots, only for them to come out incorrectly exposed or blurry due to the wrong settings. I've read countless books, manuals and even attended reasonably expensive courses. Nothing has helped and from what I've seen of guide mode this may well be the one thing which helps.

The jessops one has now been deleted.

A lens with VR will give you better images (reduces blurring due to handshake) at slower shutter speeds (i.e. in low light) so is therefore more flexible and if the price diff is marginal i'd go with the VR lens. you could also look at a site like http://www.dxomark.com/ and compare the different lenses you are considering.

You could I suppose, go into a shop and try out the guide mode see if it does what you need but I'd strongly recommend you save your money and join a local camera club or sign up to a good online course with practical photo assignments or even just watch some youtube tutorials about the different camera settings. If you rely on guide modes or auto modes you'll never really learn why some shots work and others don't. Either way - Happy snapping :-)

Like you I'm still trying to get to grips with my camera. I was a bit disappointed with the guide mode on the d3200. I found the sunset mode didn't work very well. If that is the mean reason for upgrading, I think you would be disappointed. Keep an eye on the junk mail from Nikon, they do occasionally have useful starter articles like this one

If anyone is thinking of buying from PortusDigital (link in the post above)- just be aware that they sell grey imports. Nothing wrong in buying a grey import (have one myself) as long as you are aware of the risks.

too many times random comparisons of grey imports from questionable retailers are shown as a reason to vote cold

This is not the more up to date vr lens version plus I thought this is a better package deal because it even includes 16gb SD card and a more expensive bag.

Why would anyone want a camera from 2006 which only has like 10mp? I'd rather have the quality, over price.

Nothing wrong with grey import if you are short on budget, but if you really wanna pinch pointing probably focus more on import coming every day in trailers from France.

i did already say there is nothing wrong with grey import as long as its 'sold' as such which you didn't bother doing
