The strategy makes sense. Also, I dare say HERE will pull out of the consumer space entirely. It is now owned by a consortium of car manufacturers - so their focus almost certainly isn't going to be in the smartphone space.

Victim blaming suggests that those foolish enough to download nefarious apps should take no responsibility for doing so? I agree the app store owners should shoulder a portion of the blame, but so should users! Fake apps are very easy to identify, as JoeSpur has already eluded to, most, if not all the main apps that most people use, in the case of his example social networking, they all create their own apps, under their own development centres. Facebook is made by Facebook inc, Twitter is made by Twitter Inc, Snapchat is made by Snapchat Inc. The latter is the perfect example of using third party supplied applications. Snapchat isn't present on the Windows Mobile Store, there were a number of third party options, but a breach in their security was traced back to a particular third party app which lost all the personal information of people that used the app. It no longer exists for that reason! There are also quick and easy ways of finding out if an app is endorsed or not. Outsourcing app development is not uncommon, but their own websites will link to the relevant app store page for what you need. Banking is an example of that, my bank provides an app on the google play store that is developed elsewhere, but I got the link from my bank, I know it is good!
It is too easy to blame everyone else when ultimately, all the information is there for you make the right choice! If in doubt, ask!

This is typical of Carphone Warehouse where they have low prices for 3 weeks and then they raise them again. A clue to the prices going up could be seen in a leaflet that was being given out at Carphone Warehouse which said that the sale must end on the 6th of April. The only date in the Year when a sale is guaranteed is Black Friday.

Yep, my in-store experience was similar, though the guy did sell me it (on O2 PAYG upgrade) for the £19.99 Virgin price in the end.
He had never heard of the PAYG upgrade price match, neither had his colleague. Showed him the page on CPW web site, he made a couple of calls to head office (or whoever it is in-store staff call with questions). From what I overheard, neither person he spoke to had any idea about it either!
I sent CPW a message via their web site about that experience. Ideally they'll actually do something about it (i.e. train their staff properly), but I'm not holding my breath...

Cheers - I might just do that.
I've done a complete phone reset and not pulled back any apps that I had installed on my old phone so it should give me a baseline as to whether the issue is OS dependent or a misbehaving app. If that doesn't cure the problem then I'll sign up on the insider program

Windows 10M apps are sandboxed....so rogue apps shouldn't be able to cause system wide problems.
Whatever problem you are facing is almost certainly caused by the relatively unfinished state of the OS. It is improving quickly though - as I am discovering by being in the Insider programme.

Couldn't get it, to them I was lying up until the point I showed the website and at that point they changed their tune to "not our problem, it's not as if we are Carphone Warehouse or anything". I don't think the staff have any kind of process to find out information, a process to manually override prices in situations like this or a process to get something fixed about the company. So it makes sense why they are so defensive about it since they have no ability to do literally anything about it. Sent a complaint to the ASA about it which is silly because a normal company would have just given the £10 that one time and removed the ad from the website.

Having a lot of trouble trying to get them to price match. They are just terrible. Phoned customer service and they told me to ring whilst in store or get them to ring. It will be a nightmare as the staff don't know what they are doing and the first customer service rep didn't know what they were doing.
Kind of feel like they should get training instead of me having to do their job for them haha

I don't know whether you've been reading this thread....but the gist of things is this;
W10M was released prematurely. The current retail version of the OS is still full of bugs. Your WiFi issue is probably one of them.
If you want to have the best experience, get yourself updated to Insider Preview 'slow ring'. It'll more than likely fix any/all of the glitches or WiFi bugs you have been experiencing.
Alternatively, just wait around for Microsoft to issue software/firmware updates in due course

Sign up here using your Microsoft account details;
You will have the choice to be fast ring (bleeding edge of development - more bugs), or slow ring. I recommend slow ring for beginners. It has bug fixes that are still a problem in the standard phone software....but is also more stable than the fast ring release.
Once you have selected slow ring, just go to settings > phone update and download the updates that are available . You'll be given update prompts on a fairly regular basis that will continue to improve your phone. It's a great alternative to Android where you kind of just get stuck with what you have when you buy the phone.
W10 Mobile is turning into a v.good mobile OS...especially with Continuum. Plenty of potential

As for the other ones...I am guessing you are annoyed at having to pay to rid them of adverts?! In case you hadn't noticed, the official YouTube app on iOS/Android sticks adverts in front of most videos.
Personally, I would be happy to see a small banner advert in a Windows Phone app if it means I never have to see a YouTube advert! But as it so happens, I use MetroTube - and as such never needed to pay for anything. (I did pay the 79p though as I think it is good to support the developers)

You need to get yourself on Insider Preview. Select the slow ring, and you'll get a whole stream of updates that will resolve these issues (aside from the Spotify one).
Also, I assume you've actually gone into Settings>Phone Update?! You need to get it on to the latest version of the OS because the old ones were horribly slow and glitchy.
(The new builds are vastly better though - and make this into a superb little phone)

Needed a cheap phone to tide me over until I replace my proper one I lost last week so picked this up to see what Windows 10 was like. It's not bad. Biggest issues for me - Spotify app doesn't have Spotify Connect and my home automation system doesn't work on it. Best thing is the Outlook client and Office. It'll do me for a while till I decide what next higher end phone to get. It's quite slow at times though.

Also tried online using my granddad’s Vodafone PAYG sim, but this came back as ineligible even though he has had it for years (it is active, and he does make some top-ups). After ringing CW the advisor said we would need to be topping up by at least £5 a month, every month (back to back) for 6 months to be eligible (and this isn’t the case). Not sure how accurate that is given that she was using that info to try and sell me a sim-free version at a ’special rate' of £40 (arguing that I would need to shell out a lot each month to be eligible for PAYG upgrades, so it was best to buy sim-free).
EDIT: Just found this. A little old, but probably still accurate. This says he requires a top-up of £15 in the last 4 months. His last top up was 5 months ago and for £5. Shame to be missing this deal....

Tried to price match in-store today using an EE PAYG sim (so £19.99). Wasn’t recognising my number as a valid EE number on CW’s system. Store telephoned EE and was told that whilst it is a valid EE number, EE do not offer the option of an upgrade on EE PAYG, and this is why it wasn’t working. Having had experience of the general incompetence of EE customer services (never trust the advice they give you), I doubted this, but then another colleague in store came over to try and help, and (unaware of the EE phone call) immediately indicated that she had experienced this problem previously with EE PAYG sims, and that it was not possible to upgrade them. Pretty disappointed...

Lots of the apps in the Appstore are fraudulent / dishonest and have a famous application name / logo but are not actually made by them, they just want to harvest your details / login and if you read the reviews you will see that the application doesn't work anyway.

My recommendation when getting one of these magnetic holders is to get a silicon gel case (like this: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Connect-Zone%C2%AE-Microsoft-Silicone-Polishing/dp/B01A9JAELQ or similar) and stick the other half of the magnet onto the case. Saves having a magnet permanently stuck to your phone and you have a nice dedicated phone holder for the car.

Here Maps is been discontinued on Nokia Lumia Windows Phones from June 2016, after June 2016 you won't be able to run Here Maps on a Windows 10 Mobile, it will work on a phone with Windows Phone 8 after this date, but is no longer been developed, or availabe from the App Store.
It will be discontinued from both App Stores on 29th March 2016, so update/install beforehand, to keep using that version.

Well worth the money.

Smartcall is the app for making outgoing Wifi calls using your Virgin landline number billing.
I'm guessing Virgin-to-Virgin calls will still be free as before.

smartcall is terrible anyway. I'd imagine the free calls he refers to is mobile to mobile which is free for some packages
So you think no one complains about all the malware on Google Play? I'm sure you know it has more than iOS and Windows put together... The fact Google does nothing about it makes them a joke too, right?
It's a shame some developers are rogues, but that's just the way things are these days. One or two will always slip through the net and a developer more than anyone would know how to do it. Almost any app with a web interface can change its content once it's been approved. It's down to the user to be vigilant.

I am sure all major app stores have the same policy with regards to what is submitted for use on the relevant store, but they get through. That's what the reporting tools and review systems are for!

It's Microsoft's store. It operates under Microsoft's policies which state "Don’t mislead our joint customers about what your app can do, who is offering it, etc.", and yet somehow it is the fault of the user if Microsoft doesn't apply it's own policies in its own store?
The Windows Store is a joke, not just for the lack of applications, the dreadful interface and the proliferation of junk, but because this has been evident and complained about for a long time and Microsoft has done nothing to fix it. They don't even deserve the margin-of-error marketshare they have now.

15 Mar 16#39
Even though the app store has it's issues there are a few apps that are worth getting like 6tag, metrotube and whatsapp. So if you only use those then it's perfectly fine for the price
Some apps like facebook, ebay, viber have proper issues that have never been fix and continue to cause very big problems for those that rely on them
ben1979
15 Mar 164#38

I have had a few Windows Phones and I can defo say the build quality is very very good for the money. I have a cheap 635 Work gave me which fealls really sturdy and solid. I have a Lumia 640XL of my own which is as good as an iPhone 6+ in terms of build quality (is a twin Sim Also and can hold a 128GB Memory Card). Further back I had a Lumia 1520 which really exceeded even the best Apple iPhone in build Quality.
Certainly the phones that have pssed through my hands have been exceptional well built for the price bracket.

Agreed! Also in the same category as those who complain about Microsoft spying on them when they use a MacBook, Siri, iPhone, Google, Facebook etc that spy on them even more LOL
JoeSpur
15 Mar 161#29
It's their own fault because the real Facebook doesn't list their app under the developer name of "CountFilth" (example, don't take that literally). The signs are ALWAYS there! It's very VERY rare for the app to have official everything and not be official, maybe it happens but I've never seen it.

I got this phone on the week of its release when Win10M had problems and when stupid 3 detected their universal platform as tethering and wouldn't allow it to work properly. A dozen calls to 3 gave me a discount due to not being able to use my data (shoddy service), so I ended up selling the handset, but I have tried it since and it's fine for the light user amongst us. People comparing a £20 phone to iPhone 6s and Galaxy S7 really need to get their heads tested. I have experience with £20 androids and believe me when I say it's not pleasant!

15 Mar 162#27
So how can you tell a fake app that uses the real name, the real logo, the real text? Wow, people only have themselves to blame and the store provider has no responsibilities. That'd be like Ernest Jones selling aliexpress watches and everyone blaming the customer for not being able to tell a real Tissot from a fake one.
I suspect Microsoft allows this because without all these fake apps (of which the real version doesn't exist on their store) it's quite empty.

Couldn't agree more, anyone installing fraudulent or fake apps only have themselves to blame! Windows, iOS or Android, the problems exist across all platforms! I label fools that download these sort of apps alongside the sheep that post those quite obvious fake competition pages on facebook, and then wonder why their account was hacked! Delete, block, goodbye!

15 Mar 164#24
Any numpty can tell the real app from a fake/clone just by looking at its page. FYI this is on all app stores not just the Windows one, the only difference is sometimes the real one isn't there. I actually find what you describe to be more common on Google Play.
On TCB it says "Please note, cashback will not be paid out on a handset purchase. Only new contracts and upgrades" But it does say "Pay As You Go (New & Upgrade) Sales £5.25"

I may even bung a SIM in soon .....
I've done a complete phone reset and not pulled back any apps that I had installed on my old phone so it should give me a baseline as to whether the issue is OS dependent or a misbehaving app. If that doesn't cure the problem then I'll sign up on the insider program
Whatever problem you are facing is almost certainly caused by the relatively unfinished state of the OS. It is improving quickly though - as I am discovering by being in the Insider programme.
Kind of feel like they should get training instead of me having to do their job for them haha
\end salty rant
Anyone have any trouble or did anyone doing the price match get it easily?
W10M was released prematurely. The current retail version of the OS is still full of bugs. Your WiFi issue is probably one of them.
If you want to have the best experience, get yourself updated to Insider Preview 'slow ring'. It'll more than likely fix any/all of the glitches or WiFi bugs you have been experiencing.
Alternatively, just wait around for Microsoft to issue software/firmware updates in due course
I've done all the updates but can normally only maintain 3-6 hours of connection before it disconnects. I've managed a couple of days once but then it bombed again.
For those interested top cashback tracking at £5.05(now £5.30) so makes phone under £15,absolute bargain for spec.
https://insider.windows.com/
Then download the Windows Insider app and sign in;
https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/store/apps/windows-insider/9wzdncrfjbhk
How do you get Insider Preview?
Saw a developer mode in update & security is this anything to do with it?
As for the other ones...I am guessing you are annoyed at having to pay to rid them of adverts?! In case you hadn't noticed, the official YouTube app on iOS/Android sticks adverts in front of most videos.
Personally, I would be happy to see a small banner advert in a Windows Phone app if it means I never have to see a YouTube advert! But as it so happens, I use MetroTube - and as such never needed to pay for anything. (I did pay the 79p though as I think it is good to support the developers)
Any other questions?
Tubecast £2.29
My tubes 79p
As i said NO YOUTUBE!
If my mother wanted too pay for an app I'd buy an iPhone for her.
The girl tried to do it, but couldn't see how to. I suggested that she manually override the price, but needed authorisation from her manager, who wasn't in at the time. I couldn't be bothered to come back again so I just paid an extra £5.
MetroTube
TubeCast
MyTube
For various reasons (offline video caching, background streaming, lack of adverts), Windows Phone is arguably the best place to watch YouTube content on any mobile phone OS!
Also, I assume you've actually gone into Settings>Phone Update?! You need to get it on to the latest version of the OS because the old ones were horribly slow and glitchy.
(The new builds are vastly better though - and make this into a superb little phone)
EDIT: Just found this. A little old, but probably still accurate. This says he requires a top-up of £15 in the last 4 months. His last top up was 5 months ago and for £5. Shame to be missing this deal....
Note that the Vodafone PAYG upgrade price is £24.99 though. You can get them to price-match the Virgin £19.99 in-store, or just go via TopCashback/Quidco for £5 cashback.
Version 10586.107 was meant to have fixed/improved that problem, and that came out 10th February.

I hope that is fixed, you should be able to use a recovery key, rather than have to reflash the device using the WDRT and lose all data.
and Good luck putting that data in !
You ll end up doing a complete low level flash if you are lucky !
if you ever enroll to join corporate network and emails on the phone and ever attempt to hard reset you will need bitlocker recovery key !! I semibricked mine and had to do a recovery flash on low level !
MS is so screwed !! and their W10 is pretty sleek but full of bugs !
Sounds like a ringing endorsement from where I am sat
(Unless CPW have got some new stock of these phones with updated versions of the OS preinstalled).
Your sim has to have been active for 6 months too to get the offer, so you couldn't get a new one :-(

rubbish as daily driver, but decent secondary no frills phone/satnav.
MS screwed up this phone, the SoC is really a let down.
It has the main apps and other apps like movies apps which I were surprised by it!
but not sure if it's just me but this handset does get abit slow and frustrating at times (only on this model)
but for the price and for these who want to try out windows 10 phone, it's a good use
Nokia haven't been in the smartphone game for more than a year. Microsoft are not pulling out of the smartphone space either...and these are Microsoft branded phones that are part of their current lineup (550/650/950/950XL)
Personally I like windows phone, but I don't need to install loads of apps or care about the latest edge to edge screen, my phone is for phone calls and perhaps email, that's pretty much taken care of by all the manufacturers, at least with Windows phone, the architecture prevents apps from doing much outside of what they're allowed.

HERE maps was always going to be depreciated in Windows 10. The built-in Windows 10 maps app uses HERE data and includes a sat nav..
