I have the older model. It has saved me a fortune since leaving sky. I now have Freesat and NowTV entertainment, it now costs my about £3.50 amonth (buying cheap NowTV offers) instead of £36 and I watch exactly the same channels.

bought this from Currys last year, not quite sure why people rave about this. The menu is really sluggish. it's OK as a pvr I guess.

ITsa good box but menus are slow this new model allows casting from youtube (Android not sure about iOS) the unit needs to be on the network for this feature. The playback TV is nice (not great). It also plays media (AVI, MKV) but the menus and interface is pants.
Nice box - Video and audio quality is MUCH better than that of the tuners built into TVs IMHO.
Build quality is and design is very good. Not like the cheap stuff Sky knock out. Low power consumption and heat long life from these units. Good price.
If you are technical you can use a RP2 with Kodi and USB tuner (OTA not SAT) and record HD without encryption.
The humax records unencrypted only in SD. Great box.

Way cheaper to buy a BT branded Humax box (although based on a different model), unless I'm missing something?

This is a PVR with series record it uses SAT inputs and can record 2 channels at the same time.
It has a 1TB hard disk and you can series record etc.
Files from the HD can be coped to USB (SD only HD files are encrypted and can only be played on the player that recorded them - Shame
Agree the BT Humax unit is cheaper but this is a lot more capable this can also stream content from the youtube app on Android etc...
It supports UPNP and can stream MKV, AVI files locally or remote (SMB etc)
Finally this is FREESAT not Freeview!

Is there any better freesat box? Sky is going so want to replace it with streaming and freview/ freesat. As we don't have free view aerial I am thinking freesat is cheapest.

free sat definitely has the better range of channels. I made the swap in January to this box and now tv entertainment and out of the channels we watched I think I miss out on around 2 channels. I wish I had made the swap years ago. sky have had 13 years of over priced tv out of me and no more.
the box took a bit of getting used to, it's not as good as a sky+ box. but it does the job and I quickly got used to it and the savings are well worth getting it. I was the same with no aerial , it takes 5 minutes to set up
Opening post
Usually this price for the 500GB model
