Try sticking a sturdy dinner knife under the rim and twist to break the air lock. That should make it a lot easier to open.

The other trick I've learnt is to knock the jar lid against a wall/worktop (mind you don't damage the wall/worktop!!) and it causes a dent on the lid, so releases the pressure, then try to open it!
