EDIT: I went back today and they had an Acer AL1511 on display for 50p including a power cable which I got too. Works great.
I went to CeX today to get a refund for a broken 250GB HDD and spotted a sad-looking 17" monitor behind the counter. It had no sticker on whatsoever, but they ran it through the system and apparently the price was £1. They actually honored the deal! It didn't include the 14V PSU but I have one spare and they chucked in a free VGA cable too! It's a Dell Ultrasharp, an older model (2002) but has VGA and DVI ports. Just what I needed as a server status display that's only going to be used to setup new OSes and change BIOS settings.

They also had a (what looked to be, it was hard to see) Sony 20" TV for £18 and a couple of other displays.

I'd been previously also and managed to find a 19" Dell display for £6 which was also hidden behind the counter which works great as my main display. I had no idea CeX sold displays until recently - just remember to ask staff if they have any.

Proof for the display I got today (I lost the receipt for the other one) - http://i.imgur.com/QfFrd2B.jpg - it looks like any 17" monitor would be £1 looking at the product name

Picture of the display - http://i.imgur.com/QLyLfKq.jpg - yeah I know it's old but for what I need it for it's great.

I wouldn't fancy cooling my 4690k @ 4.7Ghz in a laptop or tablet, I don't think my H110i would fit.

Other strangely cheap stuff:
https://uk.webuy.com/product.php?sku=SMEM8CMD - 512MB RAM for 10p, I can only think of it being useful for testing desktops now (they also do it for the same price for laptops)
https://uk.webuy.com/product.php?sku=SHDD460D11 - 40GB IDE hard drive for £1.50. Guessing it would be useful for fixing an old PC?
https://uk.webuy.com/product.php?sku=SCPUIENA11 - Pentium E2180 for 50p. Could be useful for testing a 775-based motherboard I guess or including in a sale just to show it works
https://uk.webuy.com/product.php?sku=SPERK2GE2PA1 - generic PS2 keyboard, 50p. Might be useful for an old PC.
https://uk.webuy.com/product.php?sku=SMEMD7AA - 16MB (yes, MB) SD card, 5p. The only use I can think of is holding the boot files for the Raspberry Pi to allow it to load Linux from a USB. Same price as a plastic bag.
https://uk.webuy.com/product.php?sku=SGRAAFHG4P10BAA - GeForce 8500GT, £3. Would add dual-monitor capability to a PC and allow it to play (basic) games
https://uk.webuy.com/product.php?sku=SMP3GENR - 4GB MP3 player for £6 - useful for travelling or where expensive iPods might get broken?

I'm pretty sure it's national as I've seen monitors in other CeX shops too - it's just today I decided to ask. There's still a few generic ones left in Guildford. This post is more of a heads up that if you do see one it's worth inquiring about the price.

13 Mar 16 #7
I read somewhere it was 36 months now...
I can't find a PSU anywhere for it actually - the one I thought I had was only 12V whereas this monitor needs 14V. To buy the PSU on Amazon is £10 so instead I'm going to grab another monitor from eBay for £10. However they normally include the PSU so if you find this elsewhere hopefully it will come with one - basically they explained that this particular model had been in the store for a while and they'd lost the PSU, but everything else they sell comes with one. Apparently they purchased the monitor for £0.30 lol

They have cheap desktops aswell.... reckon they will suitable for browsing etc?
meagain0 to ed1980
13 Mar 16 #10
You'd be a lot better eBaying for that - I've found the desktop prices there to be a bit more that what you'd get on eBay. What are you looking for? Something like a Lenovo M57 / M58 or Dell equiv. would do nicely for browsing and can be around £17 + RAM and HDD or £30 prebuilt. If you're looking for something more powerful, eBay is still the way to go except in rare cases (like that system posted two weeks ago).

EDIT: I've put together a list of stuff that looks like it would fit your requirements that's still in the moderation queue but essentially you can get a dual-core, 250GB, Windows 7 system for £30, which is better than anything you'd get at CeX.

Any recommendations? Please don't take this as self-promotion, but:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Hp-Compaq-dc5700-PC-Intel-Core-2-E6320-1-86GHz-1GB-Ram-160GB-Hard-Drive-GG54-/181493520980?hash=item2a41db5a54:g:yjMAAOSwVFlT6fTW - low price, grab some DDR2 from CeX and install Linux and it should be great.
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/RM-ASCEND-2030-CORE-2-DUO-DESKTOP-PC-2-00GHz-2GB-80GB-/171945336898?hash=item2808bda042:g:1xwAAOSwQTVWAsCQ - again, could do with a bit more RAM
They should be fine but not brilliant - if you wanted to spend a bit more:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1x-HP-6005-PC-AMD-Athlon-2-8GHz-2GB-RAM-250GB-Win7-Pro-COA-Sticker-0039-/151969884166?hash=item23621c6806:g:nNsAAOSwCQNWeXCV - includes Windows 7 Pro / 10 Pro assuming you're OK with installing it yourself using media like USB created from here https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/software-download/windows10iso - I've ordered the exact same PC from them and it's been great - running Windows 10 like a dream, can take up to 16GB RAM (mine has 8GB which was £10 at CeX), and up to a quad core CPU (mine has a triple core one at the moment) but still runs great without upgrades - just needs you to install Windows using the key on the side of the case.
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/RM-Ecoquiet-965-All-In-One-Complete-Computer-Desktop-PC-Set-Built-in-speakers-/121907412315?hash=item1c623f7d5b:g:jG4AAOSwFNZW0aGA - All-in-one with laptop components but should still be good.
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Fujitsu-Esprimo-P2560-PC-Computer-Dual-Core-2GB-Ram-320GB-Windows-7-COA-/191823606704?hash=item2ca993f3b0:g:vXUAAOSwxp9W2FA- includes Windows 7 too - again, you need to install it
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/ThinkCentre-A70-Core2Duo-E7500-2-93GHz-Windows7-/182045501211?hash=item2a62c1e71b:g:nnMAAOSwr7ZW3BaP would be nice with a bit more RAM - Windows 7 preinstalled from the look of it

Personally I'd go for the HP 6005 - I actually own one and it's great - go grab 2GB more RAM from CeX and possible a ATi 5450 / 5670 and it should be great.

This will fit your requirements well even without the upgrades I suggest. If you have more to spend I can help you find a i5-based system, though that would be overkill.

I used to work at CeX (unfortunately), some stores want monitors, others don't. A lot of hardware is put under "generic", this doesn't mean they're complete tack, if they can't find it under the system and don't bother to send off for a price check then they'll put it as generic. A lot of these are hidden in boxes underneath the displays so you could ask what generic items they have in store. I grabbed a 720p HD HP webcam which they had to list as generic for something stupid like £1, was still in the box not even used. It is particularly good for PC hardware because it's not as popular and the staff don't really care or know about the products so just put them down as generic

My experience of Harlow CeX store . I saw some memory in their window and waited ages inside with a queue and only one person serving , with 3 other employees faffing about behind the counter . I spoke up asking cannot any one else help serving people ? This responded with 2 more people serving and the queue quickly went down to me.
I asked about the RAM memory in the window the guy showed it to me and I agreed to buy it . The guy then took the memory back from me in both hands and lowered them behind the counter which I thought was odd and should have trusted my instinct and walked out.

When I tried the memory out at home it did not work so I took it back and the guy refused to give me my money back or replace it. What the guy had done behind the counter was deliberately bent the memory with both hands before putting it in the bag , so that it would not work, and because I had spoken up asking could more people serve!

If this is an example of how they trade then I would not trust their guarantee. I should have sued them on principal but for £20 I was too busy. I have bought stuff in some of their other stores and the people have been very friendly and on the basis I can make my money back on buying a few bargains . But just remember buyer beware !
HereKittyKitty to Proveright
14 Mar 16 #36
Aye, their guarantee isn't worth the paper it's written on. Bunch of shysters will try anything to wriggle out of it. Tried to return a broken DSi a while back but they conveniently couldn't find anything wrong with it. Only when I showed them video evidence of the fault did they give me a refund, and that was at their current (lower) price. Somehow, I doubt they would have given me more money back if the price had risen. Sounds like a particularly bad store though - I can't believe someone would break an item out of spite just because they were asked to do their job

Guildford CeX is usually quite good at this stuff but there's a few I've been to that have been a bit harder to accept returns.

Kill me.
Of course, I'm not using this monitor for daily use, no. It's a server status display where I don't need the 8K 50" TV you have to play your console games on. I just need something that outputs a few lines of text and maybe the basic Windows setup screen. That's it.
This post isn't just about that. If you're short on money and are using your PC for work then something like thev £6 19" display would be perfect. In fact, over 50% of all offices I've seen use similar. You want to disagree with them?

Consoles? PCMasterRace. Some of us prefer to game on PCs - higher FPS, better choice, cheaper prices, retro gaming, or even *shock horror* we can't afford a £300 XBOX or PS4. You try finding a console that can play Far Cry 4 at 40FPS for £35. See? Some of us on tight budgets can only afford used stuff and even then that beats the FPS of your consoles.

If you'd like to continue the hate for PC gaming then I invite you to vent over at PCMasterRace on Reddit as I don't see how your comment is valid here. You don't get the point of my purchase. You don't get the point of the post. It was to help people looking for cheap monitors. That's what this site is about right? 300+ hot voters agree that this is a decent deal (and I hope a helpful post).

Try finding a better monitor than my 19" Dell under £10 and then maybe I'll accept your ridiculous post a bit more.

15 Mar 16 #58
Agree to disagree ! Bet you I can get the same monitors free off free cycle , gumtree , dumped outside skips . Don't make it sound like wow what a deal when really it's not that exciting and anyone with them should be embarrassed to charge but I guess cex can't give them away so charge a pound just to go through the till ! But if it serves your purpose and makes you happy then fine and your paying too much for your consoles and they are cheaper than top end gaming PCs which I don't know anyone who uses except hard core geeks consoles are fine for casual gamers and look good on good TVs but going off track abit. Point is I've picked up a dell from a skip . Worked And it was crap so I put it back again. Worth checking first if your desperate for old tech and council recycling centres
mattyh333
15 Mar 16 #59
Even on eBay I find it hard to believe old monitors sell for much more but never checked so couldn't say for sure , maybe Gumtree has cheap monitors, not knocking people if they choose to buy one I just don't see this as the wow factor like old cheap monitors are really that hard to come by?
meagain0
15 Mar 16 #60
For people who need it quickly and don't fancy a dirty item from a skip or don't have a Freecycle or active Gumtree this is perfect. Again, the other point of the post is to explain that they do sell monitors, even newer ones still cheaply. They had a 22" for £35 a while ago, too, for example.
Anyway, let's just stop this debate now. We disagree, that's fine.

You really are making yourself look stupid, I use a desktop for gaming, photo editing, a media hub and many many other things. I chose to over a laptop due to price and I don't like using a laptop for anything other than general use. Your statement was "who uses desktops nowadays" was clearly an ignorant one as it seems many people do, this thread is an example of that.

Consoles are fine and serve a purpose granted but they don't even compete with a midrange gaming PC never mind a top spec, I have a 2 year old gfx card and an i5 processor and it runs games like BF4, Fallout far better than consoles. Why do you feel sorry for people that game on a PC, would really love to know.

Anyway, you continue to poke about in other peoples rubbish if that's how you spend your spare time. The OP got what he wanted, with presumably a bit of warranty for just a quid, without looking like a bin hoker.

Have you heard of laptops ? People buy laptops these days not PC but you won't believe me so just google it or ask PC world what they sell more of. I've bought from CEX before but usually got an added extra of a child's bogey included ! If someone's leaves a monitor next to a bin with a note saying "works , help yourself" how is that any worse that buying from some **** pawn shop?
meagain0
15 Mar 16 #65
I'd just literally replied to this but I deleted it accidentally. I would type this on my desktop but I don't think the effort to go downstairs is warranted by the stupidity of these posts so I have to type on mobile.
Most people use laptops, but some prefer desktops as they're upgradable, faster, quieter, and cooler. I don't think a laptop can take two GPUs, four monitors, three hard drives and a SSD like the desktop on my desk.
The reason PC world don't sell any desktops is because the ones they sell are terrible and unbalanced, and overpriced. Go take a look at Chillblast or DinoPC to see that decent built desktops sell way more. Yes laptops may sell more overall but that doesn't mean no one uses desktops. The majority is not everyone. For PC enthusiasts like me laptops have their place, (I have a large collection varying from 2006 business laptops to the latest Lenovo Yoga before you try to say I don't know what I'm talking about) and they're great for portable work, but give me a choice and I'd use my more powerful desktop.
Your comment about a child's bogey is so correc... Oh wait, it's complete rubbish. I'll be sure to inform you when I find nasal product on my RAM or GPU, thanks. Maybe there's some in your console games cases but not on PC hardware. And I've yet to see a PC monitor by the side of the road, ever. Of you know of any magical bins that manage to produce 17" monitors in working condition I'd love to know, thanks.

I don't really see the point of typing out my previous reply that I lost again for the quality of this guy's comments so far. I don't think any more long replies like this warrant the effort, either really. You fail at arguing for consoles so then try to criticize desktops, are destroyed by Donkii, then come up with this pretty poor reply and I don't see the point of continuing to reply to you. I'd rather be seen going into a respected technology and games retailer than in a skip, thanks. I'll pass on rumaging in bins as well.
Donkii
16 Mar 16 1 #66
Your basing your argument on sales at Currys? I used to work for Currys and believe me I wouldnt ask the majority of their staff for any advice as they simply dont care what your needs are they just want to sell you stuff. Just look at the number of sites that sell desktop computer compontents, look at the number of deals on here refering to CPUs, HDs and GPUs, there are many, many people who still use desktops. The only advantage with a laptop is it takes up less space, bang for buck the performance comparasion is massive, the user experience is better with a desktop not to mention the upgradability. Your point question was "who ises desktops nowadays?" the answer is plenty of people.

Your argument regarding the skip vs a pawn shop. If you take something from a skip, without of the person who owns or has hired the skip, your actually stealling. Of course if there is a note saying "free to a good home" your probably covered but come on, how often are you going to see that?

And quite often I see monitors outside large bins ( not skips on private land) you are talking about techies who build their own PCs which is a minority and the not the mass public same as tv and hifi people buy all in one junk from Argos rather than richer sounds or a specialist shop

Nah, I just like the fact that I can customize it and develop apps for it without paying Apple. And the fact that I have control over the built-in apps and can root it to get a ton more features.
Anyway, let's just do that.

Lol no I'm a full Apple user iPhone and 2 pads and a MacBook, guess what they make desktops too!! Lol. I really do not get where your information is coming from, you don't have to be a "techie" to install a graphics card or hard drive.
mattyh333
16 Mar 16 #71
So how many people do you honestly think do that? I know it's not hard I've done it myself but I guarantee most people will just bin their old PC and buy a new one instead of upgrading it. And I bet the MacBook and iPads outsell their desktops which I don't even know what they are called. A big screen is nice to pug laptop into but if desktops were still in fashion then iPads wouldn't sell Aswell as they do. Most people are casual surfers and use the minimum of features and just want apps and web browsing. Unless they work from home then a desktop would be better. Maybe in 5 or 10 years they will be back in fashion again and nobody uses laptops and tablets anymore
But for now I guarantee desktop sales have shrunk and if you worked at currys you would know and it's why they are so cheap now , second hand ones are worthless

How did we even get onto this? Some of us prefer desktops. Some of us don't have enough money for a newer monitor and would find the £6 one I posted useful. Some of us need a server status display so the £1 one could be useful. Just because you use an iPad and MacBook doesn't mean all of us do.

Desktops are so cheap now? Perhaps you can show me where I can pick up a cheap desktop with the likes of a i7 6700k and a r9 390x from? That's not too cutting edge.

18 Mar 16 #74
Again your listing specs ( techie talk) they've come down loads they used to be thousands or at least hundreds . Just seen a new acer and Lenovo on PC worlds website £230 with Windows 10 so second hand would be half that have a look on eBay loads for sale " because most people use laptops " apart from you people you know it seems
mattyh333
18 Mar 16 #75
Just seen tower Windows PC fetch £26 on eBay. Can't seem to copy link and paste though but will try again. The market you are talking about isn't mainstream market otherwise PC world would be bankrupt and we would all build our own PCs I'm not saying there isn't a lot of IT people that do that I'm saying that most people who aren't big users do not do that like I say ask the shops what they sell more of laptops or desktops and I'm happy to bet with you that they say laptops end of discussion

suspended lol - I'm not even gonna bother anymore.

I'm currently helping a user put together a Sandy Bridge-based PC for <£60 and it's going pretty well so far, got a G630 CPU and 6GB of RAM lined up in a HP 3400. I've come across plenty of Core 2 Duo desktops on eBay and some even below £20 but I'm not going to link as I've seen others be banned for self promotion for posting links to them and I don't want to risk it.

lol I couldn't resist. 15" monitor for 50p, including power lead and VGA cable. Apparently they have loads more in Guildford.

EDIT: This is a really nice display. Bright, clear screen. Acer AL1511.

because people still seem to be voting on this... I've got proper prices now: 15" 50p, 17" 25p, 19" £3, 22" £18 (confirmed instore today). picked up three 19" ones only to find two were 17" and the 19" one had a vertical line. gonna phone them for a partial refund.
