Got 5050 ones from ebay.
Have them in the bedroom (perfect for setting the mood. When the other half seems the room glowing red from the street when she comes round, she knows she's in for a good time!)
Also got a set in the front room.

As others have said yes they can..
to provide a more complete answer.. for RGB ones you'll likely need 4 wires between each segment..
you can cut these with scissors but you have to cut at certain points (usually marked with a dotted line), and then scrape the end of the waterproof silicon off carefully with a knife to get to the copper contacts (that you will have cut in half if following the line), you then solder to each of these and do the same on the other end.. I use this to have lighting above, below and at floor level under each of my kitchen units..
If you use white only LEDs (which is recommended if you dont care about the crazy colours - as the RGB ones are rubbish at making white), then you only need 2 cores between each end.. (cheap 2 core wire works well here - even door bell wire works for short distances)
Its also significantly easier to get the NON-waterproof ones if you plan to do a lot of joins as it saves needing to cut/scrape off the waterproof silicon coating to make the connections.
The soldering is very easy though as the pads you solder too are massive.
If you have any problems doing it message me and ill send you some photos and help out.

why would you hook up 10m of LEDs to your car ?
you get much brighter LEDS with the 5050 chips and there are tons of kits on ebay cheap with power supplies, you will also find this kit will not display true white it will be more like blue

Don't bother; absolute rubbish. Half of the LEDs on one strip did not work and the other was cracked so that there was no power beyond that point. Threw them out.

5M 300 LED 5050 Non-Waterproof / RGB / With adapter & remote - £12.99
Service was excellent. First set I received didnt stick to the wall. Went upsatirs and hour later and they had come off. Emailed the seller and they sent me another pack out FOC. Had the same issue so went to B&Q and purchased some "No More Nails" double sided tape. 6 months later and they are still holding up strong.

forgive my ignorance, can these be split into two and joined together by a cable?
ie, was thinking putting it around the kitchen unit but there is a cooker between the units - so can a wire join between two strips (that had been cut from one reel) and still light up?

Yes, if you are able to solder. Plug in connections may be available too.

Yes but you can only cut them where it is marked, I think its about every foot, also you can buy connectors for them and alarm cable can be used to extend them

He might not know the answer to his question, yet I wonder how we're supposed to know either. Reminds me of the time when a customer came in to the shop I work at and said I've got a virus it's encrypted all my photos! Get them back please! I said you can't it's crypto locked, it's impossible (unless you know the FBI:) ) So he said WHY wasn't I told about this? I thought hmm there's loads of people I haven't told, so I'm telling you all now in case you come over to me and ask why I never told you about it.
Anyway there's loads of people that write on this forum that are clueless how to use a question mark properly, I'd guess this person is one of them.

I work in retail lighting and sell LED strip all day ... this stuff is not good quality! if you do buy it make sure you stick it on metal do not stick on wood/plastic it will over heat and burn out.
