good deal. however I will never sell on eBay again! too many buyers taking advantage of the 'protection programme' and leaving sellers out of pocket! if you sell electrical items, never sell as brand new and take note of serial numbers.. mark them with a security pen to identify your item if need be. if you send by royal mail signed for delivery and the recipient signs as a name that isn't them, they can get their money back stating they 'haven't received' said item even tho they have. so you've paid to send items to people who get to keep them for free. I'm done with eBay.
take the above into account along with the fees for using PayPal and eBay - not worth the hassle!
If this happens you could take it up with Royal Mail. My partner is a Postie and says that the pda they use will verify that it went to that address, irrespective of who signs. So that would be proof.

I stopped getting the emails a while ago too and haven't changed any of my communication preferences. The cynic in me says eBay don't want to make people 'too' aware of the special offers as they don't automatically activate, which is utterly stupid, as who exactly wouldn't want to take advantage of a money saving promotion?, they should just come on if you qualify, but I digress, so anyway people who don't see them in myebay or on the app, will just carry on paying full price as normal even though they were entitled to an offer.
To avoid this I always check the promotional offers pane on the right hand side of myebay each time I log in. Sure enough this one was there this morning. A very decent offer for sure, though I have to admit I would have much preferred the month of free listings as I mostly sell low value stuff so the unlimited free listings would have been more beneficial but hey ho better than nothing...

I thought you meant eBay had put the prices up from 10% to 14% recently. I see what you mean though, 10% for eBay and 3.4% for Paypal + 20p. What annoyed me is when they started creaming off the postage too, ridiculous.

I use the BuyItNow option and check what I'll be charged before listing on this website: http://ecal.altervista.org/en/fee_calculator/ebay.co.uk/
The global shipping programme does not charge to the seller, the buyer pays the shipping price set by eBay. It increases the market both for both buyers and sellers so essentially it's a good thing.
Selling on Amazon is cheaper e.g. item £40 inc postage is usually £3.55 vs £5.56

I've had my business on ebay for several years - there's no worse place online to sell stuff! Clueless customer service removing your listing, scammers and quite often rude customers thinking they are buying 'from a mate'. 10% discount for top sellers is a joke as at the moment any private (quasi business) seller can undercut your prices especially if you pay VAT. I cannot comprehend how come they offer to sell hundreds or thousands items a month without a business registration. I don't even want to mention PayPal...

Discogs is good for 12" vinyl
Facebook local groups are ok if the admin team are good
Facebook specialist pages are also good
fundamentally though ebay does have a mass market and stuff sells quickly
Personally wait for offer like this

And where else has more than 25 million visitors in the UK per month, and turns over nearly 100 billion $ a year? Amazon's not bad, but outside of racked up commodity items, books, DVDs and games it sucks - you need a unique internationally registered barcode for every product, and it handles second hand, collectible or other unusual items badly if at all. Plus it's even more expensive!
Etsy? Yeah if you're hand making things to sell to geeky hippys (of which I probably count as one!). Tesco? If you just want to sell to Tesco customers. Rakuten... who checks play anymore? You could roll your own and set up your own site, but then you'll spend all day every day nurturing your community of customers on social media and SEO'ing the hell out of everything trying desperately to creep up the pages of Google - not that it'll do you much good, because the majority of people still don't want to buy from a site without a name they already know attached.
Sellers get treated like dirt on all the major platforms. And ebay.... probably the worst. But also, and here's the kicker, the ONLY choice for a LOT of trade. You could throw all semblance of reason out of the window and try ebid, but otherwise there is no direct competition.
You have to sell where the buyers already are. Competition in this sector is a joke.
Honestly, it did all used to be better - I remember some article in an interview years ago with some top brass at ebay, saying how "ebay was the table upon which a trade was made". Salami tactics, one key principal at a time. Remember when sellers could leave actual feedback on ebay? Not anymore! All notions of neutrality were lost long ago, nowadays you just feel like one of those abused Tesco farmers.
Large companies see marketplace sellers as a commodity to be ground into the dirt, in order to satisfy their own customers and make them a higher profit margin in fees than they could hope for on buying and shipping their own stock.

Ebay is a joke in my experience. I mean in what universe do you sell something as used and have a company hold the payment to ransom until the buyer finds a feeble excuse to return the item at your expense. There is also the hobbyist bidder button pusher with nothing else to do who treats it as a game without feeling the need to pay for the item,, I could go on. As yo you can tell I am not very keen on fleabay.
paws17 to xcess
7 Mar 16#111
As a private seller you don't have to accept returns - Just tick the relevant box when setting up the listing - and you don't have to send an item until payment has cleared. (Yes, I know that Paypal can do chargebacks). Although it's not worth it for low price (sub-£10) items, if you use Recorded Delivery to send items it avoids a lot of headaches with potential scammers.
Also, you can limit your sales to buyers with a certain feedback rating & with particular ratings - and you don't have to sell to overseas buyers - Again, just take the trouble to complete the relevant boxes when setting up your listings.
Finally, I always take the opportunity to report bad buyers. This does eventually have an effect on that buyer's Ebay reputation longer term, even though there is no officially sanctioned way to leave negative public feedback on a bad buyer anymore. (Do be aware that you could get a strike as a seller for leaving negative feedback on the positive feedback template, even though it's always very tempting to do.)
A final plea to genuine Ebay buyers out there - Please don't leave seller ratings of 3 stars or less unless you have had a real problem with a seller. Even 3 star ratings create a negative strike on a seller's reputation - and Ebay won't remove them, even if they are undeserved.)

Definitely agree Ebay is a joke. Always been common knowledge to get the best prices on your stuff, start them on a Thursday, put them up for 10 days so they end on the 2nd Sunday evening, anytime between 6-10pm and you will sell good. Rubbish. I put 20 items up, over 10 of them had over 30 people watching, only 5 sold and well below average.
I use to make a profit on stuff years ago now im just losing big time from people buying and then fees from ebay. Hell even Cex would have given me more money for these items and thats never happened.

I have to agree with others. Especially over the past couple of years, the rising fees +postage costs just doesn't make it viable to sell anymore. And I also agree that buyers are over protected, it is really easy to pull a scam.

As a seller with over 1,200 reviews I would advise against those who wish to sell high value items on EBay. EBay actually support fraudsters and sadly I have been involved in one. After collecting overwhelming evidence of fraud committed by one of my buyers who had zero feedback all they did was support the buyer from a call centre in the Philippines. They were unwilling to take any action as it wasn't within their standard proceedures in their legal department. EBay lose nothing but the seller always will! Frauds committed are around 7% of my sales that I know of anyway so it could be higher.
Although Gumtree is also owned by Ebay I would place your ads there for these types of items. This is a dictatorship and the competition commission don't do anything about it just like with Coca-Cola, Apple, Google, Nestlé et al.
OK that is my blabbering finished. Good luck!

For personal sellers the fees are simply too high. I used to sell loads of eBay some years ago when Fees were around 3/4% and no FVF on postage. As soon as they increased to 10% it just wasn't worth it. Case in point - I sold something on eBay last month for the first time in ages. Item went for £220. Cost me £14 to post. Total cost to sell item including postage almost £43!!! As a personally seller I find this unacceptable.
The alternatives are:
1. Gumtree - have had some success with this
2. Other auction sites like Ebid - not so good
3 - or, simply don't bother selling your things - my preferred option!
captainbeaky
7 Mar 16#92
Their fees still look high to me - it depends on what & how much you're selling but it's 20% if you were selling a few books each month for example.
Gumtree works just as well as eBay for personal stuff, for a business it would be useless. Facebook you don't get so much £ because everyone wants to pay nothing.
I stopped using eBay last month. I wish sellers would start keeping their website prices keener than their eBay price.

Although there is much truth in your message about dodgy buyers on Ebay, my experience is that Ebay DO accept a signature from Royal Mail Recorded Delivery as proof of receipt for the item, even if it is not the buyer's own signature, as long as you ensure that the item has been addressed to the buyer's official dispatch address Which is confirmed by Ebay in their confirmation of payment). In such a case it is for the buyer to chase Royal Mail about exactly who they have left the item with.
Some buyers move house & forget to update their personal details on Ebay/Paypal. Not my problem if I've sent the item Recorded Delivery to the official address, even if it is now out of date. If you are thinking of selling on Ebay just make sure that you adhere strictly to the conditions of the Sellers' Protection Scheme. Theoretically, at least, this should give you a better chance of avoiding buyer scams.

^^ this. I started selling on Facebook/Apps after the PayPal charges made Ebay not worth it anymore. You do have a smaller audience but can join more groups to widen your reach. Sphock is kinda annoying. People offer half what you stated but once it's up you can just leave it. I almost gave up on them and then a month later (wasn't urgent to sell) someone popped up offering for the actual price I listed.

Those are ok for personally selling a few items, but without a cliquey specialist niche you can't turn it into a business. You're also unlikely to get top dollar, and on FB, you're either relying on your extended circle of friends or having the same social media nurturing ballgame as your own website would require.
And, if you're just personally selling a few items, deals like this one from ebay make it perfectly viable. The chances of you picking up a poisonous buyer or getting unlucky with the post are also pretty low too if your volumes are, meaning you won't fall foul of ebay's merciless one-sidedness.

I agree that Ebay and Paypal charges might not be to everyone's satisfaction but if you want to sell something, there is nothing better to make sure your item is seen worldwide!
If you are using Buy it Now, you can control how much you want your item to sell for (or use reserve price for auctions) and add a little extra to cover the fees.
I also appreciate that some fraud goes on which I assume is inevitable on such a large scale but this can happen buying and selling whatever you use unless it's cash on collection (even then who is to say the cash is genuine?)

I stand corrected  Wish I'd known about that one. I feel pretty sure there was a zero FVF weekend a few times too, but I didn't have anything to sell at the time.

Some time Ebay send 100% off final value fees with free listing.
Often get 75% off,50% off final value fees if you not have sold anything quite a while.
35% is still low

Amazon market place is a much better place than Ebay. Their fees are similar but chances of selling your items at a good price is much higher for popular items.

Will probably make a new eBay account because the current one that I sell (not that often) rarely ever gets me any discounts to use on eBay or Paypal. :-/

Ebay send me an occasional email inviting me to sell on Ebay (rather than just buy) and offering a discount or money back. I must admit I hear so many stories of things going wrong I have never been tempted to try it. A friend sold some new shoes, the buyer then contacted to say they had not got them, my friend told the buyer the parcel was tracked so they would look into it, then the buyer said they had got them but they were too small, my friend said sent them back for a refund, and the buyer just left very poor feedback. As a buyer on Ebay I have had very few problems with sellers though.

I got this, I also got the previous one with 4% final value fee which was better.

interesting comments about eBay. I sell on eBay usually low value items upto about £20. when i use royal mail I rarely use recorded delivery and always use myhermes. I can honestly say fraudsters equate to about 0.01% of my sales and when i do get one i just bite the bullet, don't let it get to me, refund them and move on, its part of selling on eBay.

I've been selling on eBay (over £20k of sales) for several years and only ONE parcel that I sent off via second class has apparently not "arrived" to the buyer but I took a risk as it was only a £20 item anyway and Royal Mail refunded me £20 a few weeks after.
Just used this deal to sell an item worth £405, it cost me £26 in fees instead of the £40.50, pretty happy with that!

I saw this offer on my phone in the eBay app. Accepted that... Then 30 mins later tried to list something and it tried to charge me. Went back... It said to click the offer to accept, did it again... Then listed my thing. Three other times it's said "click to accept", several other times it has been accepted but still says to click to accept, so I do and it says "already accepted". Driving me nuts... But it works

it's because I cancelled a few transactions. I cancelled them because brand new members with no feedback were trying to buy my stuff. Didn't want to deal with them.

I am a personal seller - I just sell household stuff/clothes/toys that have been outgrown as a bit of a hobby/way to make extra cash/recycle. I only ever list when there are free listing offers ( I never pay fees to list) and maybe make £100 a month. Always amazes me what people buy. Brings out the Del boy in me! You do get the odd non payer or parcel that goes missing but never enough to put me off.

Having been ripped off on eBay before, not by the sellers, but by eBay themselves holding on to their commission even when goods have been faulty or not arrived, and the sellers have given me a refund, I have concluded that of all the crooks using the site, the worst are those in charge of it, and won't touch it with a barge pole. Cold, freezing cold.

Your link is in relation to currency conversion, that is not applicable in this case. You charge £120, the buyer is charged the conversion fee from their currency to yours.

Just the last week:
Ebay removed my listing due to 'MHRA regulations' saying to contact the agency if any questions - I appealed 4 times without any success - eventually MHRA came back to me saying Ebay was wrong! Now Ebay say I can relist my item starting from scratch as the watchers, history of sales and the rest is gone... Seriously?
PayPal open a lot of chargeback cases saying 'unauthorised transaction' was made - all items sold with Argos collections. PayPal next asked me for a tracking number to proof I did post all the items - no chance as they were low value items however I can prove there have been collected as I received a written confirmation from Argos for each collection... Well it turns out for PayPal it was not good enough as it must be a f&^%$!g magic as that did not qualify for proof of postage!
Stay well away from both if you have anything to sell!!!

So this is 35% off the 10% they charge on the final cost?
Does that mean that if an Items sells for £100 then you only pay £6.50 instead of £10?

Great post but EBay is an absolute joke they are obviously trying to claw people back in because they have p*issed that many sellers off. The Star rating for buyers is a joke and they are not clear enough to buyers that this effects accounts so much. I got kicked off because people were leaving less than 5 stars seeing 3/4 as average!

Also the fees are extortionate it hardly makes it worth selling your old clobber.

If you sell through the global shipping program they charge you a fortune.
EBay is a total joke. Ide rather sell anywhere else.
take the above into account along with the fees for using PayPal and eBay - not worth the hassle!

Still extortion but it's the best auction site for selling worldwide.
Be nice if PayPal had a nil few as well.

I didn't know the global shipping programme cost extra?!
The global shipping programme does not charge to the seller, the buyer pays the shipping price set by eBay. It increases the market both for both buyers and sellers so essentially it's a good thing.
Selling on Amazon is cheaper e.g. item £40 inc postage is usually £3.55 vs £5.56
Just add 10% for foreign shipment to cover excess fees for global orders.
where? is better?
Discogs is good for 12" vinyl
Facebook local groups are ok if the admin team are good
Facebook specialist pages are also good
fundamentally though ebay does have a mass market and stuff sells quickly
Personally wait for offer like this
I cleared £2.5k selling some of my trainer collection off in Jan.
I took advantage of their £1 max fees promotion (so much better than this one)... was brilliant for items selling at £120-£200 each lol
It charges a conversion rate between the buyers currency and yours and it isn't cheap.
take the above into account along with the fees for using PayPal and eBay - not worth the hassle!
I now do my own international postage. Easier.
They keep offering nice promotions to me via email! in the past couple of months i have received a free £10 voucher to spend on what ever i want, and last month i got an offer to double the value of what i sell up to the value of £30 quid! so £40 for nothing!
Been thinking of setting up my own webite instead. Anyone know if this would work out cheaper? Any reccomendations?
got 10% my purchases off a month ago.
got 30% last week.
and got this 35% off this morning!

You pay standard eBay fee & a higher PayPal fee. PayPal charged me £7 for selling £120 item to New Zealand through global shipping.
1) accepted the offer - no error messages
2) delisted my current listings which already has zero insertion fee (20 per month)
3) tried to relist & immediately told Im being charged 35p listing fee
complete con
I use to make a profit on stuff years ago now im just losing big time from people buying and then fees from ebay. Hell even Cex would have given me more money for these items and thats never happened.
This offer itself is good but for me it's still not worthwhile unless it's the 75% off fees offer which ran twice a few months ago.
Although Gumtree is also owned by Ebay I would place your ads there for these types of items. This is a dictatorship and the competition commission don't do anything about it just like with Coca-Cola, Apple, Google, Nestlé et al.
OK that is my blabbering finished. Good luck!
The alternatives are:
1. Gumtree - have had some success with this
2. Other auction sites like Ebid - not so good
3 - or, simply don't bother selling your things - my preferred option!

I stopped using eBay last month. I wish sellers would start keeping their website prices keener than their eBay price.
What about people that used to regularly use it until things like stopping the 100 free listings a month. It's amazing how the majority of big companies don't know how to run a business
366 feedback. 100% positive.
How the hell did they work that one out.
ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha, best joke I heard today...
With ebays 'protection' what it is you may as well just visit your local scumbag and give them your stuff for free... at least you wont have to pay postage (or give a refund).
A penny in the hand is worth 1 penny more than any Paypal sellers account balance.
I missed out on these offers for ages until an Ebay rep. let me in on the secret. Just scan down your "selling" page to the very bottom (even if you haven't got any active listings at the moment) and if you qualify for any promotional offers, they'll be listed there, just next to the standard "20 free listings a month" offer which is always there.
Sphock (although thats pretty bad as people make stupid offers)
Facebook is good
I sell loads via facebook, just join a group in your local area with a decent admin who dont let people sell pets / cigs / ecigs / booze and other dubious items.
also various specialist facebook groups... Adidas trainers / Outdoor gear etc etc
When i tried selling an item in eBay, i was socked with the fee on eBay and then on PayPal.
I was happy to accept a return and sell it elsewhere.
