I didn't get a free plant pot but spotted that Illinois mixer taps are reduced to £14.
They have a pile of them in Wellingborough.

Is this one of those cheap taps that rust in a year

Don't you mean cheap kitchen tat?
I think you'll find its end of line and will be chrome plated brass. So no it won't rust.

Heat added although I would have expected the higher previous price to be higher.

The mechanism needs to be brass, thats why the good quality ones are heavy, if you buy a light one you will replace it within 1-3 years

Currently got a Lidl one, it was a heavy one, but the body turned out not to be brass, its got a leak and a bit of the metal snapped off and judging by the weight and colour, I think it is probably zinc. Surprisingly the chrome still looks great!
I've also read that some cheap taps use a very poor quality brass which also won't last.
So weight is not a sure sign of quality, although I agree a light one is bound to be crap.

A tale of 2 taps in our house. A cheap and cheerful 'Martin' bath mixer tap that cost very little from iBathUK on Amazon and has performed faultlessly for 2 years (the chrome plating on it is the best I have ever witnessed and we've not one drip out of place since it was installed). The other one (DEVA Edge) was getting on for 100 quid and performs poorly - constant drips, wobbly bits and non-aligned tap return position.
I do wonder if we aren't being ripped off with the so-called 'better' makes. I'm assuming 99% of taps are made in China anyway...

Exactly the same experience with £11 Aldi basin mixer vs £100+ Bathstore ones (have had two of each in use for 8 years). The Aldi ones are nicer to use too.
No problems with two B&Q kitchen mixers installed 3 years ago.
We do have soft water though (thanks Wales!). Those with hard water need a softener as hard water will kill any taps (as well as your piping, kettle, etc.).

Problem is with cheap taps in our kitchen the hard water kills them after a year or so. Im gonna pay a but extra get a decent one next time

I find that the chrome plating is always rubbish and becomes tarnished within a year..

deva and bathstore generally are not considered as selling good quality taps. traditionally brassware was self explanatory and heavy. Many modern taps are not and are made out of mazac. this has implications as a base for plating but this can be done well or badly. in terms of use the cartridge quality inside decides this. then it's down to correct specification for your system. there are good and bad far eastern manufacturers, as well as British and euro. go see a good independent specialist.

Hudson Reed stuff seems good. Had a concealed thermostatic shower valve for 7 years or so and no problems. Installed myself and appeared to be good quality.

We bought taps from B&Q exactly like this but for our bathroom (sink and bath). Not cheap ones.
After a few months the mechanism jammed up stopping all water flow. In the space of about 18-24 months we had four replacements from B&Q. Reviews online confirmed the problem wasn't just with us.
