answered my own question... yes it can be turned off. so this can be used for drilling and screwing into anything.
for this price I've ordered as a spare.

Have it for years... Great drill for home. For that price? Just take it.

I bought this drill last year and it burnt out on its first use drilling through a single thickness brick wall.
If you look at the reviews all the bad ones complain of the same thing and when I say "burnt out" I really do mean up in smoke the bloody thing cought fire!!
I had to use my Makita cordless to finish the job.

Generally try and do most jobs with my rechargeable drill, but very occasionally the batteries haven't charged, or they run out - this seems an excellent choice as a standby - as far as some "going on fire" I've been using BOSCH tools for over 30 years and never had a dud, I can only presume there's been a problem with airflow and the coils have got too hot.

Great price - got one of these at Christmas for £30 from Amazon - only thing I've found is that it's a bit underpowered.
