The only thing different that I can see about these potatoes is that they're rather large!

Normally this would be a good deal, but currently Morrisons have 1.5KG bags of white washed potatoes on offer at just 32p. Tesco also have their potatoes on offer at 2.5kg for £1 which is the same price, but standard ( not wonky) variety

Are these still available does anybody know please
On a program I saw, think it was on BBC, they showed a picture of a JCB type machine tipping veg trimmings onto a waste pile claiming this was Wonky Veg going to land fill. Anything to back up their story.

i really love these pictures - thanks for posting!
Trying to work out in my own mind the value of the wonky veg deals from supermarkets. The idea is superb and I hate the thought of good vegetables going to waste for cosmetic imperfections. Are the big supermarkets offering better value though for wonky veg when compared to the non-wonky veg offered by discount supermarkets? Mulling this over and would value any feedback as I can be a touch cynical about the marketing ploys of supermarkets and large organisations in general. This is in the context of aldi weekly veg offers and lidl selling four different veg at 39p (though not necessarily 39p per kilo) each week.

It also goes to make animal feed and even electricity. Only that which can't be used, a tiny portion, goes to landfill and is turned into useful compost. And, as i mentioned earlier, if you eat wonky veg, non-wonky veg goes uneaten so you are not reducing waste in the slightest. If you prefer the taste, go for it but don't delude yourself into thinking you are saving the planet.

For something that would normally go straight to landfill , how do they justify the £2! Should be cheaper
soldierboy001 to peanuted
5 Mar 162#49
Get this straight people, not pretty fruit and veg does not go into land fill. It goes to the factories that make soups, stews, portion packets etc.. When I worked as an HGV driver I saw many bulk lorries collecting for these factories whilst I was collecting the pretty stuff for supermarkets ETC..
I also collected from the factories that made these products so not much eat-able produce gets wasted.

So, even if the farmer supplied the wonky veg for free, they still not be free in the shops!

Have you got any links to any studies on this, or an idea on what I should be searching the net for. I've been looking for articles but only found ones saying nitrites exposed to extreme heat can be problematic. Oddly most things I've found seem to think the nitrogen levels in vegetables are a good thing - like this.

I bought two bags of these last weekend. They aren't at all wonky, the odd knot/small blemish but no more than you'd expect in a bag. They're Maris Pipers, so not just generic "white potatoes".

no1 really talks about this stuff in UK... so no1 really knows, same thing with Palm oil ( people just being brainswashed that it's bad because other trees are chopped down to plant them but no1 tells you it's bad because it fu.ks with your heart ) The food quality in UK is just CRIMINAL, Hence I'm a big fan of aldi/lidl which sells mostly imported german food where the standards are much more strict.

4 Mar 161#39
This pretty much explained it.
I come from a family who has been growing spuds commercially for past 80years and we grow a special field for our own consumption where we don't put in all the crap in them to make them nice and big, they grow a bit slower/are much smaller and no1 would buy them from us just because they don't look ''normal and huge'' , but the difference is just mindblowing in taste/texture/colour.

Do you know how that translates to "don't eat large potatoes"? Nitrate toxicity is a thing of course but I'm pretty sure lettuce and spinach will always have higher levels than potatoes.
I'm curious as to where this advice came from.
Master G
4 Mar 16#37
Nitrates are a form of nitrogen that plants can easily absorb. Nitrogen is essential for plant growth, but it can be very dangerous when present at high levels in humans. Within our bodies, nitrates lower the ability of the red blood cells to carry and deliver oxygen.
229mel
4 Mar 16#34

Btw don't buy the super super large potatoes=means they are grown with sooooooooo much nitrogen you wouldn't want them in your diet or even touch them.

Can you explain this in more detail as it seems fairly meaningless. I breathe in a mixture with almost 80% nitrogen in it so it doesn't seem like it's harmful.

Yes. Everybody has an opinion, but it would be hard to argue that "red wine" is generally better than "pinot noir" (or "cabernet sauvignon" for that matter). It is an amazingly clever point you've made, but if we're looking in that depth: you may wish to put your full stops after your quotation marks. Even if copy and pasting from a google search.

Master G
4 Mar 16#23
André Tchelistcheff declared that "God made Cabernet Sauvignon whereas the devil made Pinot noir." The point i was making was that it's not true that it's 'only' not a good deal if the identical product can be found cheaper elsewhere.

It's only not a good deal if you can find the equivalent type of potato for less. Otherwise "Fallout 4" for £20 isn't cheap on PS4, cos another PS4 game is £5.
Master G to once_upon_a_tyne
4 Mar 161#20
Incorrect. It's also not a good deal if you can get a better quality item for the same price.
