Don't really understand the concept of waterproof socks... If I wear them do I no longer need waterproof shoes/boots?

Can't go wrong with an extra layer. I use similar ones, the only issue is my toes get cold so I guess they're not very windproof. I think it's the same type but not ankle length.

not certain but id guess water could easily come in the top of the shoe
cycling motion might draw the water in more as well as more vertical movement?
just a guess!

Use these for rowing and they are ok - not submersible by any means, but they are warm

What happens when you try to submerse them?

I use them with a pair of small bridgedale undersocks.
Seems to improve their warmth.
Anybody tried silk socks underneath these sealskinz?

They let water in, but maybe that's my skinny legs!

I bought a pair of these as a cheap option when I just started cycling to wear under a normal pair of trainers. They did not work at all, sent them straight back and bought a pair of waterproof shoes/trainers instead.

I've got a pair of sealskinz socks and they are supposed to be breathable but after 2 or 3 times using then they start to smell very bad. Anybody got tips?

I don't think they let the moisture out.
