Wow, I was going to say they're only £12.99, as that's what I paid for mine when the game first came out, but you're right - I've just looked and they're pretty expensive now for some reason! Best bet might be eBay - either just for the cable or for a cheap console copy of the game with cable.
There are cheaper cables, and homemade ones, but the quality is questionable. There is also a crack that enables you to use your microphone to pick up sounds from an acoustic guitar or electric + amp but that's not very reliable either.
I believe the consensus is that it's a great supplement to 'proper' guitar lessons - I.e. a fun way to practice - but I've tried learning the guitar on and off over the years and I feel that I've made more progress with this game than any other method.
Cherub Rock is the only one you need.

This is great if you're thinking of taking the plunge.
I have this on console but the PC version is a far better experience.

I would love this for my daughter but I can only find the cables for £30 to £40 ...... am I missing something or is that the real price for a lead? and do I need one ... i am guessing yes.
Thanks for any info given

The best price for the cable is £24.99 from Amazon. As many have said, there are modded versions of the game file that also allow other cables to be used (at much lower cost).

So so worth it! Brilliant game. There is also a dedicated community who create many custom tracks that aren't currently within the rocksmith library. Tons of material by bands like nirvana, Metallica, ac/dc etc... All you need to do is buy one song off the dlc. Check it out
