OK, So I fully appreciate that this has been highlighted before (a couple of times). But I definitely thought it was worth a refresh. Courses are listed below if you need one.

(It's now stated that you don't need a valid place of study to apply for the NUS Extra card at the moment using Endsleigh).

I purchased one last year and it's been great, if not just for the £39 annual Amazon Prime Student inc:

- Unlimited One-Day Delivery on millions of items
- Access to over a million songs and hundreds of playlists, ad-free
- Unlimited instant streaming of more than 15,000 titles with Prime Video

There are literally 100s of retailers that offer NUS discount, from the £5 (£4.50 NUS) Co-op meal deal, right up to Up to 54% discount at Thorpe Park Resorts.

I have taken the liberty of highlighting below the 40 most popular retailers (compiled from various sources on the internet) I could find below with their discount percentage and links to their websites.

I have also linked to online courses (from £9) in the first comment. £21 for a valid NUS card. No brainer.

I genuinely hope this helps.

6 months of Amazon Prime free when you email Amazon with a photo of the NUS card. See Student Prime page for details.

to get 3 year card for £33 delivered.
Saves having to do this process every 12 months.

>>>>>

Do not forget to add the very best bit of this deal to
your NUS cart at purchase.. The Gourmet Society is
£2.99 for the year.. not £64.99!

Read the forum before posting your question. All possible questions have already been asked (PI numbers, student ID numbers, etc.) and answered multiple times. It is rude to expect others to craft an individual answer just for you when you can't be bothered to read what they have already posted.

I just clicked renew (when the invitation to do so was emailed to me about a month before expiry) and ensured the original course dates reflected the potential length of the course. I wasn't offered 3 years the first time, but was this time

Amazon require an actual scan of the card if you don't have a student email address. If you don't have one, you will need to refer to this page.

3 Oct 16 #1067
What's the score with nus card now? I have had mine for few years never used it last year but got another today.in past all I did was go on to nus site got code and then on Amazon site and worked.
But I'm reading now about Amazon student do you need to be part of this for it to work now?
Also in past you could use the 5% discount right away before getting your card as code to use was on site when logged in.
But why is it not working?

Also what are the benefits of have Amazon student if you already have nus card even more % off?
It says something like 31st October 2016 this Amazon student ends??
That's less than month away.
Very confused about it all before nus card was all I needed and my main reason was for Amazon like before but will use it on other site etc too this time.

Bit late in responding, but at time of this post SA are offering "one free course" via http://www.shawacademy.com/learning/?product=shawreviews
otherwise there's 20+ courses on offer for £1 via GoGroopie. https://www.gogroopie.com/deal/1xuext7f40/_1_Summer_Sale___Choice_of_21_Online_Courses
Promo "expires in 5 days" but it appears to miraculously auto-extend.

I think I've made a mistake, signed up for a "Foundation in blogging & content marketing" course with The Shaw Academy. It only lasts a month though, so does that mean I can't get an NUS card for a year?
I can't seem to find a close match to the course on the NUS form and after uploading a photo I get "Oh no! An error occurred while processing your request. Please return to the homepage, and try again."

You do not need to buy a Nus extra card to pay £39 on Amazon Prime lol Amazon only asks for your University email address to verify student status. However, Amazon never sent an email of verification to my uni email address and I still got Prime discounted lol I think that happened because I had previously ordered student software (student version of adobe creative cloud and dragon speech software - a uni email is needed for both although adobe and dragon asked me via email directly not Amazon) or Amazon is desperate for customers. The NUS extra card is good for saving 5% on Amazon sold/dispatched products. NUS extra also doubles up as an ISIC card (good for saving on discounted flights).

Got this last year and when mine came up for renewal that's exactly what I did as well. At the end of the day I guess its about retailers getting your cash and any incentive to do so, they'll bite. So little reason to enforce the signups...

I've not paid a huge amount of attention, but (at least at my two local shops) they don't scan anything, it's all done on the till, but I am in a big university town, so that may just be a time saving thing for when a large percentage of sales are to students.
Rastafari
8 Apr 16 #1010
Do they instead scan a barcode that's left by the till?
Mex5150
8 Apr 16 #1009
I've used my card in half a dozen or so different Co-Ops, not one of them scanned/swiped it, Like I said before, until this came up, I didn't even realise it was possible to.
Rastafari
7 Apr 16 #1008
NUS cards need be swiped for discount in the CO-OP. Not accepted in Central Midlands CO-OPs.
fargame
7 Apr 16 #1007
The card hasn't been scanned at first place, the manager looked at the card and asked me (with a nice smile) if I got it from ukdealsuk and I naively thought he's one of us so I said yes. I saw him talking on the phone with my card in his hand, not sure who he's talking to, OU, NUS or maybe his informer?

I'm quite certain one has to swipe their card to get discount in coop, I will try again in another coop later this evening, will report back later.

Petetobin
6 Apr 16 #1003
Well there is no barcode so they can't swipe it but there is a magnetic stripe so theoretically it could be swiped but as @Mex5150 says I would be amazed if it did anything. I have never tried to claim the Co-op discount because even though I am taking a course I feel too embarrassed to when people much worse off than me need to pay full price. I am happy to take the restaurant discounts though as that is just a commercial thing like Tastecard. I also take the Amazon discount as they can afford it!
Mex5150
6 Apr 16 #1002
I've never had mine scanned (in fact I didn't even know they could be scanned), but even if they always did scan it, how would they know? I'm assuming the dick manager from the first place refused the card without scanning it, so how would anybody make the connection? Even if the connection was made, why would they take his word over yours? After all they have received money from you (and may do again), but nothing from him, it's just an unsupported accusation.
fargame
6 Apr 16 #1001
My local coops always swipe/scan my card and yes, been using the card in coop fro few weeks already no problem. But on Saturday it just couldn't be read at the checkout. The staff was going to call someone over to help him out because he could see it's well in date but I was too worry to have a another embarassing moment so I told him not to bother. Maybe it's coincidence but I just feel safer buying another one. I'll think of it as buying Amazon prime membership in discount. No too bad either.

Bad luck mate, thanks for signing up to Hotukdeals just to tell us your tale of woe. Just want to share what happened to me last week and best to stick to shaw academy or other cheap courses if you can. I was confronted by a self appointed NUS police last week in a restaurant when I was trying to use some student discount, the manager or maybe the owner basically tricked me into admitting that I got the card from hotukdeals and refused me discount saying I am not an OU student. This morning I found out my NUS card dont work in Coop, think it's not just an coincidence so am going to get another card with work address and real online course.

This might be a stupid question, and I've tried looking, but there's so much BS. I've found a free course through Manchester University, it only lasts nine weeks though, so what should I put as the course end date when signing up for a card?

Are people able to get a card for twelve months by signing up to one of these shorter online courses?

Searching the whole of HUKD for "Pi number nus" or "pi number student" returns 0 results. I've looked in quite a few pages of comments for this post for "Pi number" and can't find anything. Appreciated you have a comment about reading the forum first, but I can't find the advice for pi number on the forum. Any help?

Yes...given that the NUS card generates cash for the NUS (I quote their website: "with revenue generated being fed directly back into key student initiatives in Students' Unions' across the country”), the more people buying the card, the better it is for them. So they would welcome the loophole. On the other hand, the retailers who they have negotiated these deals with may not feel too happy that what are supposed to be discounts limited to a relatively small section of the population (students) are actually open to everybody. Yet as others have suggested, the retailers may actually be getting bigger profits (because people are spending where they wouldn’t have otherwise spent), and so are quite happy to let it continue. Viewed from this perspective...the ‘loophole' is a crafty piece of marketing that generates funds for both the NUS and retailers through convincing people like us that we have got one over on retailers and scored a cracking deal! So rather than seeing the NUS, retailers, or poor students (of which I am one!) as the victims here...the real victim just might be the exploited HOTUK dealer...

I wish people would stop wailing about fraud!! The NUS website themselves says the course can be free if you like and it lists ONLINE courses. I emailed about a course I bought to do online that's not eligible, they said tell the online course company to contact them about joining up. If it's OK to buy or get a free/cheap course and get an NUS card WITH THEIR SUPPORT how is it fraud?! It doesn't matter how old you are too.

Can you do shorter courses as the Shaw Academy offer free 1 month ones here:

I can't help replying as it seems you are trying to be a kill joy. The companies will know about this and they are not bothered. This little 'scam or cheat or fraud' actually generates them profits. Think of it as heavily discounted baked beans at a supermarket. You think you are being clever going to buy the cheap baked beans, but you end up buying other things, generating profits for them and most likely future sales,as you know think of the shop as cheap. Amazon, people are now getting Amazon Prime half price, 'the horror' Amazon should stop this. People who would have never bought that product now are. And once they have that free delivery, what do they do? Buy everything from Amazon. What is poor Amazon to do with all those extra sales. Like a drug dealer giving out free samples you're hooked, next year a good percentage will continue to use it.
Shouldn't you invest your time in more socially rewarding activities than trying to tell tales on people.

True but all the local kids knew when the Poly were enrolling so it was word of mouth and they came in to get a card.

If anything it should be a lot easier to validate if people are on courses now, but as I said before there does not seem to be the will in the NUS to close the loophole. If they seriously were concerned about it they could close the loophole easily.

Can confirm, I saved the entire cost in one sitting this week. This "loophole" has existed since at least the mid 90's when I did a part time degree at Kingston Poly. At that time there were no checks at all you turned up at the Student Union at the right time, fill out the form and give them a photo. They never even checked I was enrolled on the poly at the time I applied.

NUS can say all they like about this is a loophole and that they don't like it but they seem to have made very little effort to restrict applications in 20 years....

Online, The Body Shop uses Student Beans (25%)* not NUS, I asked them and have "no plans" to change partnership or to allow both NUS and SB. Body Shop does have 30% off with voucher with free delivery (got mine today) if that helps more than the student offer anyway.

In-store, un-sure as my partner uses NUS find in store just shows it at checkout/till.

1 Mar 16 #922
I guess I agree and disagree with you @Cybervic.

The card is definitely running as a commercial enterprise in order to generate money for the NUS which they can use on banning people they disagree with from speaking on campus or whatever they choose. As long as the partners are happy and they make money then they are happy.

And therein lies the rub, if a major partner such as the Co-op or Amazon were to withdraw from the scheme due to abuse of the system then NUS would have to sit up and take notice of what is going on and clean up their act.

I also wouldn't be at all surprised if this story was picked up by something like the Mail Online, you just have to read some of the rubbish they publish to recognise that this is big news!

I did contemplate whether I should put that sentence out, I was sure someone will use it to justify themselves. Nevertheless the point is NUS didn't approve what the thread is doing (hence it's now expire according to NUS,) they choose not to action because there are more important priorities than chasing after individual swindlers." (NUS's word.) You can of course be cynical and believe they don't care but I felt I know better having worked for them before. there's a difference bwteen "don't care" and "choosing to use limited resource on seomthing else."

The suggestions of using makeup student ID or use open university where one's not actually studying is one thing, but it doesn't take a genius to know that majority of people who bought the card as a result of the thread's encouragement have no real intention of becoming a student.

Of course you were trying to save ppl's money, but if you care about money ONLY and nothing else... well, that just said it all really. :sunglasses:

The intention of the post was to save people money, it's what I do, regardless of what people feel about the offer highlighted. I've quoted a magical little piece of your comment there...

They know very well there's a loophole in their application system and they are also aware of this thread which they disapprove how the posts encourage public to be benefited from the loophole. However, they aren't doing too much about it at the moment

Finally managed to have a long chat with someone from NUS today. This is what I was told:

NUS card is for students in Further or Higher Education. You can't go and buy a course just to get a NUS extra card, you actually need to be studying the course full time or part time. Any FE or HE course be it £1 or free is eligible as long as you are an actual student and enter all details truthfully.

They know very well there's a loophole in their application system and they are also aware of this thread which they disapprove how the posts encourage public to be benefited from the loophole. However, they aren't doing too much about it at the moment, they are hoping the proportion of the abuse is small. NUS card used to be an acceptable proof for mature student when applying young persons rail card but not any more because of this problem.

NUS will cancel cards if there's any discrepancy in the system came up to them, they don't actively look for false information but bear in mind they had a large database and it's easy to find out if one's school detail is false.

-----------------------------
I doubt any of the info going to change anyone's mind if one already thought it's ok to exploit.
Nevertheless, I think it's a shame that this thread has expired, perhaps OP was making a real point forcing NUS to tackle the issue head on. Imagine a national news headline, - Everyone can get Free Amazon student prime and 10% discount at Co-op.....

3) Input 'n/a' as the student id number
4) paid
5) Have received confirmation email

Businesses use these type of deals to recoup fixed overheads and use full priced customers to make their real money. That is why most of the offers are only available at times when they are quiet. There might be the odd exception but in general they won't care who has a card.

It is simple logic in catering , you pay for the ingredients then staff and running costs , then put a margin on the Finished food product to recoup your costs . Restaurants will be pulling out of this as it is a risk of putting them out of buisness .
Bottom line is 80% of businesses fail , as they simply do not make money . If your customers start jumping on a discount wagon then your business will sink

You are deluded to think that businesses like to decrease margins or profits

They paid out £2.2m in commission to universities for selling the cards - I assume signing up at the website still entitles the organisation to commission (hence why that writing course promotes it), so nobody really has an incentive to prevent it until the partner companies complain.

Invalid argument.

You do not need to be in hardship to have an NUS card, that is not the qualifier, no matter how much you would like it to be. Children of billionaires are just as entitled to an NUS card as you. Companies making these offers are not losing any money, why would any company offer an intensive scheme that lost it money? What would that do to their share prices? Every one of the companies that does an NUS discount makes money on those discounts, if they pull the discount then they are not doing it because of abuse, more likely it's greed.

@sarahj88 just to be clear purchasing a short course does entitle you a year's membership of NUS Extra, it is even advertised as a course benefit by eCareers. You may feel that this is not appropriate but it's certainly not fraud.

So much unnecessary rudeness, aggression and self-justification for scamming on this thread. What is the world coming to when decent people can’t discuss how to pretend to be a student to get an NUS card and can’t be rude to do gooders who object. I mean what is this, a public forum?! What next, how to do benefit fraud? Whiplash claims?
Fraud is fraud, whether or not NUS try and actively stop it. Noone needs to be told you have to be a full or p-t student to qualify for an NUS Extra card. But it is made absolutely clear on their website and the terms. And “NUS reserves the right to cancel any card where incorrect or fraudulent information is provided. In the event that information is found to be incorrect, you shall not be entitled to a refund.”
Enough is enough now. There’s plenty of discussion here of making up details and people encouraging it, so I’m reporting it to crime stoppers. Let the police decide if it’s worth looking into people’s applications- can’t see myself how it’s not fraud by those fabricating details and those studying a brief course and claiming retailer discounters for 3 years.
And post 808 is spot on. For anyone concerned, NUS is 01625 5413288

Well after being in debt for 20K in student fees , on my final year and full time employed with many sleepless nights studying . it is irritating to think that some people who theoretically could have comfortable lives can snap up a discount on without proving hardship .
I wanted to take out my partner today for a meal but two restaurants refused the card as they say they 'no longer take the card' - Which one one hand is understandable if people are taking the mickey - which is what we are getting at

If I make an application to your organisation, you can make the rules and turn down my application. It's not me thats deluded mate. For starters, why would you buy an NUS card to get restaurant discount, when you can get a gourmet or taste card giving bigger discounts on free repeat trials?

In truth, its more likely these restaurants refused you entry because they were worried about upsetting the rest of their customers.

Many years ago I did my first degree part time via work day release. I did Chemistry and it was 9am to 8pm once a week with an hours lunch, so a ten hour day.
When I got my NUS card then it was a card one with a photo stick on it and laminated (which show how long ago it was), and they had different colours for part time and full time.

I asked what should I filling in full or part time, they asked the hours I did and when they heard it was 10 hours they said the cut off was what the lowest full time course did hours wise, that was philosophy and they did 6 hours a week as a full time course so I qualified as full.

Hours of study a week really had no bearing on what was or was not full time in the NUS eyes, and I think they phased the part time version of the card out by the time I did my Open University course, and it was then a printed credit card type card done centrally, not a laminated bit of card done by the local Student Union.....

Lol, I don't even know if you're trolling or just incredibly asinine. What an obscene waste of police resources that would be.

Fraud is not fraud, that's just stupid black and white thinking. If 'fraud was fraud' then there would only be one sentence for fraud, there are a huge range of fraud offences and ranges of sentencing. Nobody has ever been sentenced for obtaining a discount card.

Fraud is defined in the Oxford English Dictionary "Wrongful or criminal deception intended to result in financial or personal gain"

Lying about attending a university in order to get what is essentially a money off coupon would never be considered 'criminal deception', and as people are making up a fib to gain a discount card (that they pay for), there is no direct financial gain.

Please get a brain transplant.

Erm No.

Unless they changed in the last few years these often verify you by access to a .ac.uk account, some FE places allow you to maintain your account forever on their systems, so you can pass almost any place that considers the .ac.uk to be a valid account as student status.

Well that is indeed quite fascinating, but who gives a ****? The NUS make the rules for this deal not you, ergo the deal is valid. I am a student, and my university is not valid for this deal so I have not got one of the cards, I do not hold a grudge against those who have though, I wish I had the time to also do a two quid course and get the deal.

yes it's for pat time students too, but imho a part time student is someone who's doing a course that requires at least 10 hours of studies per week for a lengthy of time. I don't think a month course nor a £2 counts and if you disagree then that's what we mutually agree then. it's probably not good broadcasting the deal which you already taken advantages of for obvious controversy reasons.

Unidays and Student Beans offer their product for free and are bullet proof. The NUS either have rubbish IT or have diverted the revenue into other causes. Anyone who has been a student knows it's the latter. They won't care up until the point that the partners walk away.
cybervic
19 Feb 16 #822
Wrong, 1. NUS doesn't (or at least didn't) have budget to make the sign up process harder and 2. it costs to use UCAS database even if they wanted to, and 3 it's not possible to ask all affiliated organisation to send the database over. 4 the sign up process has changed over the year, it used to be collection at student union or students' office only until recent years they decided to include more students. (and my guess is to generate more income.)

I'm stupid, so I conclude differently than your suggestion.

I have my card and gourmet club discount which ive used several times already, the amount of savings are immense after just over a week so that alone justifies it to me. I couldn't care less about anybody elses percieved 'moral issues' about it.

Also point to note - if you have actually been to the site and gone through their sign-up process and saw how easy it is to sign up you would see how painfully simple it is to obtain. If they wanted to make it harder to obtain they absolutely could for example verifying course details against the UCAS database and displaying a disclaimer that signing up for a NUS card without actually being a student is fraudulent blah blah blah. None of these things exist...

Also this isnt new vic... The sign up process is that its been like this for years

Conclusion that any intelligent person would reach - they dont care

Surely it isn't so truly terrible having someone in our society/community to care about right or wrong be it big or small. I used to work for them few years ago and they were on the verge of closing down due to lack of funding. NUS extra was then born in the hope of generating sustainable income, thus it's rather important for NUS extra to have certain retailers on their side to give them discounts. If I was still there, I would have been worried to hear such thread gets mentioned by the retailers and I think this is the reason why it's expired.

I am all for it for anyone getting a bargain but I personally feel it's a different matter if one has to lie or create fake number/info in order to get the card. Having said this, I am genuinely truly curious if NUS wouldn't mind people buying cheap online course for getting NUS Extra Card. If this is the case then there would be no moral or whatever issues isn't it?

I don't think I've seen as much pointless anger in a thread on here with "new members" allegedly joining to vent their righteous spleen.

Id still like to know why this deal has been expired! Have they sold out of cards? I think someone suggested the CIA are leaning on the site to stop publicising it through fear of a global meltdown. For people who have made sh*t up to get a card you obviously run the risk of losing your money if they have sufficient resources to find you out. As I have said before these guys are focussed on making money and will only tighten up if they are forced to by their partners. Personally I see it as no different to a Taste Card, a bunch of greedy people around a trough all happily feasting but some of the partners such as the Co-op may see it differently. Wouldn't be surprised to see Amazon and Spotify tighten up as well but cheap pizza FFS you don't need to be a student to get that kind of stuff!

Yes I applied and yes I lied and yes I've probably lost £13. Wouldn't be surprised if NUS staff make these posts as it's all profit for NUS if they decline thousands of applications!

Tell me how much profit you make if you sell 100 items at £10 giving a 10% discount or 0 items at full price.

Lol @ small margins. Yes somethings that's true, but if you think that's true all round, how do shops give discounts of 80% and BOGOF? More importantly, do you really think they give a monikers about students?

Its a competitive world out there. Shame you don't understand how it works.

No 90Ninety you are wrong, retailers like selling stuff. Based on your argument there would be no Quidco, no Vouchers, no Taste Card etc. If this draws more customers to them, they are happy to discount. The exception is poor old Co-op who are clearly trying to help students as the margin in their game is so low. Stop trying to pretend this whole thing is anything more than a virtuous circle.

The T&Cs say "In order to purchase the NUS extra Card you must be aged 16 or over and be in part or full time education. Certain exceptions apply.". I can't see how the Shaw Academy's course wouldn't count as "part time education" - it has a full dated schedule with live webcasts.

Just a warning for you all.. please take note before applying!

Even though i was careful to tick the boxes to not receive any marketing materials, THE DAY AFTER i applied for the card i received 2 letters in the post from removals companies. It seems NUS know that people are doing this so rather than blocking the applications they are taking the money for the card, sending them out (mine is 'in production' right now) and then selling your info on to third parties for extra profit.
How do i know the letters came as a result of applying for this card? I purposefully didnt put the flat number, low and behold the marketing letters didnt have a flat number but my name was on there

Anyone concerned about the dishonest element here who aren’t studying anything and encouraging others to provide fake details, don’t get into further debate, as its been pointless, just let NUS know. Note I’m not referring to anyone legitimately buying the card with a course. Also post it on the NUS facebook page. For those too lazy to read what they’re representing about themselves and who pretend not to grasp how they’re being dishonest and that they weren't warned by NUS they had to be a student/about fraud (!?), here are the terms: “In order to purchase the NUS extra Card you must be aged 16 or over and be in part or full time education.” “NUS reserves the right to cancel any card where incorrect or fraudulent information is provided. In the event that information is found to be incorrect, you shall not be entitled to a refund”
Also see my post 416. The dim element don’t realise this thread has caused a massive spike in NUS Card applications, which only occurs in September. Smart criminals leave no trace. Unfortunately those here dishonestly buying a card without studying haven’t thought through they’ve provided their details. Then if they check this thread they’ll see posts suggesting you can make up a fake PI number, not bother studying anything etc. So what those individuals have to hope is NUS don't check anything as a result of the application spike and complaints about this thread.

This is effectively a discount card that you are purchasing. The NUS want your details so they can
sell them, retailers want your custom as they want repeat business from young people who tend to be the top earners of the future, that is why it is notionally aimed at students. Why all this talk of fraud! If people want to preach about fraud why not have a go at people like Amazon who tell a pack of lies to claim they are a Luxembourg based company, so they can avoid paying tax here. Thats dishonest, and little people like us have to pay more tax to subsidise them and pay for essential services

The thing is Nesima\Marko, if it was an actual issue with NUS I think that hotukdeals would have been asked to take it down by now. The other thing is - when you go to their site to sign up *there are no disclaimers that mention fraud*. It is far too easy to sign up and get the card, there are absolutely no warnings at all. Also, prior to this appearing on here its been like this for years but has not been widely publicised.

I wouldn't refer to you as right minded, I'd say more of a goody-two shoes busybody with a strange moral code who gets upset and uptight if something doesn't fit in with your 'progressive' world view. Nobody cares (including me) about your moral code - I already have my three year card and have used it a couple of times already. Quit throwing your toys out of the pram as not one single person could care less. If it still bothers you why dont you call the police NUS Card Fraud Prevention hotline that doesn't actually exist except in your own daft mind.

The deal information has been edited, but when it was first posted it simply suggested that you could get an NUS card by lying on the application.

Regardless, I suspect NUS cards will be dropped by a lot of retailers because it's blatantly being abused by muppets who think it's okay to apply for one when they aren't even close to student status.

A PI number is needed though to complete that, which I suspect might give the game away if a "dodgy" number is entered. I wonder if anyone has managed to successfully blag a card with this method. (I can see people have applied but until they get the card, no one is the wiser.

Please explain how this IS a fraud? The deal is if you are on a valid course you are eligible to buy one of these cards, if somebody decides to lie and claim they are studying something when they are not, how is that the fault of the OP or HUKD in general?

Your best deal to date was about a tub of Ben & Jerry's, if somebody decided to go steal a tub rather than pay for it, does that mean you are advocating theft? Should that deal have been removed because somebody could do something different from the offer and try something illegal?

Yes there are some people here openly scamming the NUS, but there are plenty who are not, I am eligible and didn't know about the deal, should I suffer because others take it upon themselves to lie about something? I think not, if you do why are you even on this site?

If people really must complain they should be doing it about the people asking for PI numbers rather than about a totally legitimate deal (although just moving on would be better still)

Can we just clarify that you really believe a criminal offence has taken place by someone who has gained one of these cards by signing on to a £1.99 course which qualifies them to apply?

Also, what exactly do you have a problem with this site having a deal for a NUS card? You do know they're not illegal don't you?

PS How did you get on at the police station?

i have just ordered. Can the OP update the description to confirm if it is compulsory to actually sign up for a course or not because I just processed without and it does not look necessary to actually do so although there are notes to say where to buy cheap courses. the description isn't clear and I couldn't find anything in the first few pages of comments either. Also when selecting a course, is there a tried and tested course that has been accepted without actually having to sign up? I did "Home Study Courses" and made up a number. Thanks

Clearly it is people who post yet another iteration of the same question expecting someone to write yet another answer just for them rather than read the posts who are the lazy ones, and before you complain that there are too many posts to read them all (I have read them all), consider how many fewer posts there would be if the same question did not get posted over and over.

I'd looked at that gourmet card on there too. I was thinking it was a bit naf as places like Prezzo only give a 25% discount (whereas taste give 50%) - then realised its the full bill including drinks. Thats a better option as when I go to a restaurant with my wife, the food bill is £30 and drinks £120 lol

Ive actually got a MS Office 365 Student license for 3 years, which says its an Aussie Uni - but I'm guessing if I tried using that I'd possibly get that pulled! How likely is it they'd check? My thoughts as well. Its a throwaway £2 that might prove useful. Still not sure whether to use this for just a year, or go for the whole hog with a dodgy 3 year OU course.

I noticed that putting in OP, it gives start dates of September for course starts. Would that mean the card has a start date from Sept 2016 (Or 2015 if you put in last year), or be from your application date?

PI is the OU's Personal Identifier, its the number you get to use on all work and exams.
They are unique to each user and if you try making a random one up unless you get luck and get one of someone who's actually currently actively doing a course the NUS validation will reject it.
PI's of people who have finished a course (such as I) will not validate if you are not actively studying.

"Manchester Met Students Union", you can opt for 3 years without PI number.

Obviously its just an option and down to the individual. Knowing those options, its then down to the individual. I must admit, I thought the same as you and have ordered one of the photography courses for £2, but whist it makes it a "genuine" (I use that term loosely) aplication, its then only valid for 1 year. I fully expect that once the card is accepted, it will run its course, so yes its a gamble, but maybe a worthwhile one.

I was worried to post this a I got a 5 year one a couple of years ago. I'm do have a vague memory of small print and asterisk sign with a line about you don't need to be a student to apply. This is when they first came out of course so may have changed. My area is a CO-OP monopoly so i loyalty swipe/NUS swipe/ then store voucher to the max. i.e Spend £55.50 get loyalty swipe first, then NUS swipe to £50 then £5 off £50 spend...boom. Cater to which ever voucher you get from the store 50p off £4 £1.50 off £15 etc, so effectively i get 20% off most of the time which is what staff get at pay weekend only!!! Also , just got 6% off instore with card (whithout the education online form filling) for an Apple Air 2 then £135 off for trading in iPad 2 and iPhone 4...double boom

12 Feb 16 #564
@pete525 Through purchasing online training, I am able to meet the criteria for an NUS Extra card (see link below, part time education is eligible). The discounts are obtained by virtue of having an NUS Extra card. Where's the fraud in that? It's not like it's a fake card. That said, I can see that one of two things will happen shortly, either the merchants will stop accepting the card or NUS Extra will need to tighten up their criteria like Unidays.

The OU PI number is your personal identifier. It's the number the use for all your exams to anonymise you to the markers.

They are unique to each student and i know from when I did an OU degree the NUS validates them so once you cease studying the PI you had will not be validated by the NUS

I had few times when the OU had not fully processed my next course and the NUS site would not let me proceed until the OU fully processed my course through.

NUS are offering these knowingly to non students (hitching the price up £10 to £13 in a year to take full advantage) and as a result, a huge number of organisations now refuse NUS and insist on Unidays where the students identity can be verified. Odeon and Amazon due to follow soon. RIP NUS

I had an NUS card that I got free when I opened my first bank account, I think I used it maybe twice. I don't think paying for the privilege of tiny discounts on shops I never go to is a great deal, in the long term I reckon I'd be spending more money 'trying to save' than just not spending the money in the first place, but hey that's just me. That Amazon prime discount isn't bad though.

Also fyi if you have a standard university or college card, Mcdonalds accept that for a free cheeseburger/mcflurry with a meal, no NUS card needed!

The best thing about the NUS card is that airlines accept it as valid ID for domestic travel as well as travel between Britain and Ireland. For £13 a year it's like a Common Travel Area passport for undocumented migrants to easily move freely among the British Isles.

TescoCookieBuyer2013
12 Feb 16 #449
This isn't an error on their part though so it's not really comparable to price errors or glitches which are normally down to someone's negligence. This is more of an open system which allows "students" an easy process of signing up. As I said, I'm not shaming anyone because as you can see I took advantage of the Tesco Cookie glitch a few of years ago but I do believe there should be a line. Its funny that someone mentioned Starbucks in reply to one of your comments, because celebrities and big companies have been using "loopholes" for years to pay less tax etc. but people are quick to criticise them but will happily exploit glitches, loopholes or whatever else they can find to save money (not directing that at you, just a point I'm making)

Just a warning for those who are concerned- those who aren’t are free to ignore this. You need to be eligible ie following a course. If you don’t and make up the course or pay £10 for an online course but don’t follow it, you’re likely committing two possible offences: fraud by false representation and obtaining services dishonestly. Plus every time you show the NUS card for a discount, you’re holding yourself out as a student. If you’re not in truth studying, and are dishonestly claiming the discount, you’re at risk. I’m a lawyer ok. It’s just not worth it. This thread is like watching the city riots a few years back: in the sense of people thinking if everyone does it (looting there), it must be ok. If you disagree with my view, fine, your risk. But don’t try and convince yourselves or others you’re not committing an offence. If you get detected, any jury would convict when a non-student is claiming a student discount, in full knowledge they’re not. About one in five UK adults has a criminal record. Much harder to get employment. If you’re desperate to get an NUS card, make sure you study an eligible course. And NB the alumni card terms make clear you have to have graduated from a relevant institution within the past 12 months.

I got a similar NUS Extra card deal last year and I contest that you don't need a university email address or standard university NUS (not extra) card. If we are talking about the NUS EXTRA card, Amazon refused to give me a discount on scanning this card alone.

If you are purchasing this mainly for the Prime discount, I advise that you check with Amazon first that the NUS Extra card alone will entitle you. If the answer is now different, I will be getting in touch myself again to get my discount too!!

Unlike some it's not fraudulent either, as I'm a post grad student who has a family - and for the purposes of the HUKD scum balls, my job is related to my degree subject matter and I have no student debt.

it's a legal loophole NOT fraud. Loopholes exist in all rule based systems; taxation, accounting, trading, hedging, internal controls etc etc people find loopholes & exploit them. it's up to the owner of the process with loophole to plug it. In the interim - fill your boots!

I open a new gmail account every month, followed by a new Amazon account. I then subscribe to Amazon Prime for free 30 days....I've been doing it for months. it's a loophole & I'll enjoy it until Amazon plugs it.

My Uni. I.D. was just a six figure number. I can't imagine they can check it as it is 30 years old and the uni has changed names three times. You could try putting in a random number and see what happens.

Wow, stereotypical discrimination! God forbid that these days a large amount of students are adults that were made redundant, many parents trying to better their children's lives by educating themselves and hopefully bettering their financial stability and their future opportunities. Out of touch of reality, dinosaur age stereotypes. Getting very yawn on here.

Simply ignore the University e-mail address box - it is not mandatory.

As others have stated you can get PRIME by sending a scan of your NUS card through to Amazon. I have done this purely for PRIME but I am sure I'll save a lot over the next year.

I don't agree, one simple way for NUS to do this is take the money, dispatch the cards and then cancel the cards, T&C states no refunds etc. One easy way for them to make money, the discounts aren't affecting NUS anyway they're still getting paid by us and the companies lol, most that will happen is some companies will decide to stop the NUS discount

Don't get me wrong though, I'm not shaming anyone, I just wanted to give my opinion as loads of people were saying it wasn't fraud. If someone feels they can exploit something and they aren't worried about consequences, good luck to them

The loophole would be applying for a course (the 1.99 courses posted in the comments for example) and then technically speaking you could say you're a student on that course.

The fraud part would be those who are putting in fake dates, changing dates etc, that is when it becomes wrongful.

Semi-related question...

Going through the process of getting braces (Very early stages) and the brochure for the private practice states 10% discount for students. I can get a NUS card outside of this deal anyway, but do you think this would be enough for me to be valid for it? In this situation, 10% is hundreds of pounds so I'm very keen to apply it. Are they entitled to query this/ask for proof? If they do, how should I respond?

I'm going to give it a go anyway but thought one of you lovely people may be able to help. Cheers.

What was your course?? The idea is to sign up to a cheap course, some e-careers one worked a treat for me, through Groupon or Wowcher. The fraud act says:
Wrongful or criminal deception intended to result in financial or personal gain.

However there is no Wrongful or criminal deception as clearly if there was the NUS would have taken a enhanced stance or resort to some checks.

If there is no deception, there is not an argument. In law you need both the physical ie Actus Reus and the Mens Rea (the mental act). If either is missing there is no crime.

You won't be able to use one of these cards on the Unidays site - I had a card from Endsleigh last year and it does not recognise it as an eligible place of study. However, despite this, I made huge savings on the card through NUS Extra and in town - Wilkos in particular - 10% off in Exeter, but I could not use it in Wilkos in Torquay as was told by a member of staff that discount in Wilkos is only for purchases made at a store that has a University in town.

no you don't. I did this, sent Amazon a photo of my nus card and Hey presto. Free Prime for 6 months plus 5% off all purchases, not to mention half price prime thereafter. There is a email link on Amazons student page. It's very very simple. I can highly recommend doing this.

I was studying last year, I put in the details for my course and it went through, I don't really see the issue with that. I didn't know at the time I could have applied for the card to be honest, the college didn't tell us.

As for people applying for the card without actually having done any courses or anything, I get that you want a discount but the definition of fraud is "wrongful or criminal deception intended to result in financial or personal gain", wrongful deception intended to result in financial gain is exactly what you're doing, so you know, anyone saying it isn't fraud is wrong.

I haven't read through all of the responses so someone else may have answered this already. But the amazon 5% only works for the first £1500 you spend at Amazon, if you spend more than that then the discount is no longer applied. There's a new code out in August to start it again.

Is the £13 for 1 years membership. It's giving me the option to buy a 3 year card for £32, and 1 year for £12, although my course is due to end at the end of the year. Would it be ok to purchase a 3 year card even though I probably won't be a student for all of the 3 years?
couturekid
11 Feb 16 #175
If you are indeed a university graduate, you can obtain an nus card via https://cards.nusextra.co.uk/affiliate/alumni

Having said that, obtaining it through the link i stated, i don't think you can then do the amazon deal as you won't have a uni e-mail.

E.T.A - Ok, maybe they've changed things, for the amazon deal you just need to send a pic of your NUS card: https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/feature.html?docId=1000741813

I still saved a bunch of money regardless.

I don't see it as fraud, if anything it's a loophole. Shaw Academy is recognised by the NUS therefore if someone signs up to one of their courses they are eligible.

If Venezia is concerned about people committing fraud with this then they obviously feel strongly enough never to shop at Amazon or Starbucks & use Bing to avoid Google.

Not sure what point you are trying to make. My point (which you clearly missed) is that after paying tax non stop since leaving school, its nice to get some benefit like the current students do. The students will one day get their pension but they also currently get shed loads of discounts, which i have never got but they still moan while getting their freebies. Fact.

Free McFlurry when you order an extra value meal. I often resort to McDonalds when I'm working away from home doing wonky hours and need something to eat at 3am. Has paid for itself in no time. Also Amazon Prime Student has paid for itself within a couple of months. Also... saved £200 on fees for a conference I'm attending in a couple of months due to getting the student rate. Although I have no objection to people gaining this deal (like any other) you do have to question whether these deals are going to be pulled for everyone with increasing amounts using them. These discounts meant for students not a 40 yr old man earning £110,000 p/y to get 10% off a Co-Op rice pudding.

Considering it is the generation where many of whom actually economically gained from going to University through grants etc... it is a bit of a joke to see people exploiting this when tuition fees are now £9000 p/y. Remember it is our generation who will be looking after you all when you are old.... :face_with_monocle:

I've been using one of these for YEARS, I choose the option for "Study at Home" and every year it is accepted (although I do get the odd funny look on Mucky D's as I claim a free ice cream on the DriveThru with my granddaughter in the car, VERY mature student)

Businesses don't care if you're a student or not, they don't set up these discounts to lose money, just to get you through the door, and humans are creatures of habit, once you've been going to the same store for years you tend to stick with it, so the money comes in.

I have Amazon Prime, quick scan of my card and it was processed the same day, and I just use a regular email. You do have to send the scan from the email on your account, or change your account email whilst they process it.

Comedy Store offer half price tickets to NUS card holders, pays for itself first night out.

Businesses don't lose
You save a few quid
The NUS increases its funds

I don't see a downside.

1: Because academia isn't for everyone.
2: Because not everybody has the intellect and/or ambition.
3: Because not everybody can afford it.
4: Because £9k per year goes a long way elsewhere. I personally would encourage young people to spend that money on traveling around the world, not University, and would argue that this would have equal or in some cases greater benefits.

This list goes on. I don't understand what you are being so abrasive about tbh.

Well, I think it's down to NUS to be more rigorous with their checks if they want to avoid this sort of thing happening.
Shame on them.

But will a NUS extra card give the same discount?
bigpappa
11 Feb 16 #41
Well it seems you can get this as a graduate as well so it seems legitimate for many who have left university.
BuzzDuraband
11 Feb 16 #39
Nah you don't  I have Amazon Student Prime, and I don't have a University email address, I just scanned and sent them my NUS card.

I'm also wondering if I could get the 3 year card if I finish in 5 months?

Just a heads up that you have to have a University email address to get Amazon Prime for £39.
john184
11 Feb 16 #33
Deal title slightly misleading as it infers that you get half price prime by having a student card, where as you only need a valid student e-mail address (anything with a .ac or .edu extension). Nothing stopping you from using a kids email account as they don't check.

If you want a student card for free to get cinema discounts etc. Just apply for a unidays account which will give you various student perks and discount.

I would sleep better if I was giving myself banker bonuses, or one of the 50 people who own half the planets wealth between them, or a politician feathering my bed by jumping into bed with the arms companies, but I am not and have to struggle to make ends meet. Even so I am doing this the honest way as I am an alumni of 2 Universities and applied through that route.

You got me worried now. I simply entered my old uni details and the course I was on (10 years ago) and asked them to send the card to my home address. I can't get in trouble here can I?
BuzzDuraband
11 Feb 16 #27
That was the reasoning mate. I've literally used it for only the Amazon Prime (half price), the 5% Amazon discount and the Co-op meal deal

That's what I am wondering about, it seems to vary from 5% to 15% depending I think on whether you are in F.E. or H.E. Dell would be good also.
The_Hypnotoad
11 Feb 16 #12
No you dont.

And what obvious reasons? its not fraud and you are not making any kind of fraudulent card. Its a club and your paying to be a member of that club. If they find out they cancel your card (which is completely irrelevant because no company scans your card any more)

Ive been renewing my card with the same college course I did 5 years ago, just add an extra year on to the end date every time I go to renew. They know no better, for all they know Im just a slow learner.

Maybe you should study and learn.
Firstly its fraud and you will also lose your money if you could be bothered to read:
NUS reserves the right to cancel any card where incorrect or fraudulent information is provided. In the event that information is found to be incorrect, you shall not be entitled to a refund.
