OK, So I fully appreciate that this has been highlighted before (a couple of times). But I definitely thought it was worth a refresh. Courses are listed below if you need one.

(It's now stated that you don't need a valid place of study to apply for the NUS Extra card at the moment using Endsleigh).

I purchased one last year and it's been great, if not just for the £39 annual Amazon Prime Student inc:

- Unlimited One-Day Delivery on millions of items
- Access to over a million songs and hundreds of playlists, ad-free
- Unlimited instant streaming of more than 15,000 titles with Prime Video

There are literally 100s of retailers that offer NUS discount, from the £5 (£4.50 NUS) Co-op meal deal, right up to Up to 54% discount at Thorpe Park Resorts.

I have taken the liberty of highlighting below the 40 most popular retailers (compiled from various sources on the internet) I could find below with their discount percentage and links to their websites.

I have also linked to online courses (from £9) in the first comment. £21 for a valid NUS card. No brainer.

I genuinely hope this helps.

6 months of Amazon Prime free when you email Amazon with a photo of the NUS card. See Student Prime page for details.

to get 3 year card for £33 delivered.
Saves having to do this process every 12 months.

Courses available for £1.99 in post #192
- Apogee00

>>>>>

Do not forget to add the very best bit of this deal to
your NUS cart at purchase.. The Gourmet Society is
£2.99 for the year.. not £64.99!

Read the forum before posting your question. All possible questions have already been asked (PI numbers, student ID numbers, etc.) and answered multiple times. It is rude to expect others to craft an individual answer just for you when you can't be bothered to read what they have already posted.

Maybe you should study and learn.
Firstly its fraud and you will also lose your money if you could be bothered to read:

The_Hypnotoad
11 Feb 16 #12
No you dont.

And what obvious reasons? its not fraud and you are not making any kind of fraudulent card. Its a club and your paying to be a member of that club. If they find out they cancel your card (which is completely irrelevant because no company scans your card any more)

Ive been renewing my card with the same college course I did 5 years ago, just add an extra year on to the end date every time I go to renew. They know no better, for all they know Im just a slow learner.

john184

Deal title slightly misleading as it infers that you get half price prime by having a student card, where as you only need a valid student e-mail address (anything with a .ac or .edu extension). Nothing stopping you from using a kids email account as they don't check.

If you want a student card for free to get cinema discounts etc. Just apply for a unidays account which will give you various student perks and discount.

I hope they do. Uneducated fools trying to save 5% on BHS is a complete joke. The real benefit is being a student, the knowledge you learn to better your life... too many fools skip that bit and decide a life of ignorance and a tiny discount is more important. Why not get educated??

11 Feb 16 #69
Yea I grabbed this last yea. Mine expires in March, I think I can use my course to buy another year though without paying for the elearning course again.

Amazon refunded the rest of my year, added 6 month free and then half price.
Spotify half price too.
10% off random discounts at shops like Go Outdoors etc, comes in handy... if I ever shopped at coop it would be great but I don't. My sister wants one as she lives next door to a coop and constantly shops there, but she's a tool who doesn't really plan money wise and won't invest 30£ upfrton to save hundreds for the year *shrug*.

So the NUS scheme is not actually for students, but for all the UK to try and sign up to, I am sure Amazon are more than happy to give away half of the yearly subscription fee to possibly fraudulent NUS cards, I am not sure why the mods are allowing this post really.

I pretended to be a finance genius to get this, it was OK for the first week or two but I found things started to change. now I don't get up till late afternoon, don't wash much barely brush my teeth as I have servants to service me. I also Keep going back to my clients raiding their coffers bumming money off them. I don't walk anymore I get chauffeured , I drink more mainly cheap bottles of Chateau Margaux 2009 or Dom Perignon. I've put weight on eating caviar and fillet mignon. I hang out at House of Commons or City clubs, frequent Harrods, private clubs. I could go on so be warned just for the sake of saving a few quid is it worth it, well this 49 year old thinks so. You don't get huge bonus and payouts without fleecing millions/billions of pennies from others. This includes an NUS card for being a trainee trillionaire.

1: Because academia isn't for everyone.
2: Because not everybody has the intellect and/or ambition.
3: Because not everybody can afford it.
4: Because £9k per year goes a long way elsewhere. I personally would encourage young people to spend that money on traveling around the world, not University, and would argue that this would have equal or in some cases greater benefits.

This list goes on. I don't understand what you are being so abrasive about tbh.

Aside from amazon prime the best buy I have had with my NUS card is the membership for Picturehouse cinema. Instead of £55 for a year it only costs £15! Iv been able to take advantage of loads of freebies since I signed up and on Mondays its only £5 a ticket, bargain!

I've been using one of these for YEARS, I choose the option for "Study at Home" and every year it is accepted (although I do get the odd funny look on Mucky D's as I claim a free ice cream on the DriveThru with my granddaughter in the car, VERY mature student)

Businesses don't care if you're a student or not, they don't set up these discounts to lose money, just to get you through the door, and humans are creatures of habit, once you've been going to the same store for years you tend to stick with it, so the money comes in.

I have Amazon Prime, quick scan of my card and it was processed the same day, and I just use a regular email. You do have to send the scan from the email on your account, or change your account email whilst they process it.

Comedy Store offer half price tickets to NUS card holders, pays for itself first night out.

Businesses don't lose
You save a few quid
The NUS increases its funds

I don't see a downside.

The people 'LOSING' out will be every genuine NUS card holder when retailers pull the discount because it's been abused to death. So probably about three million people. A fairly big deal if you ask me.

Maybe the Op will regret posting this deal when his/her next iMac purchase has to be made at full price because he/she posted this deal

Although I have no objection to people gaining this deal (like any other) you do have to question whether these deals are going to be pulled for everyone with increasing amounts using them. These discounts meant for students not a 40 yr old man earning £110,000 p/y to get 10% off a Co-Op rice pudding.

Considering it is the generation where many of whom actually economically gained from going to University through grants etc... it is a bit of a joke to see people exploiting this when tuition fees are now £9000 p/y. Remember it is our generation who will be looking after you all when you are old.... :face_with_monocle:

Free McFlurry when you order an extra value meal. I often resort to McDonalds when I'm working away from home doing wonky hours and need something to eat at 3am. Has paid for itself in no time. Also Amazon Prime Student has paid for itself within a couple of months. Also... saved £200 on fees for a conference I'm attending in a couple of months due to getting the student rate. I very much doubt it, IMHO the NUS (as opposed to the local Student Unions) have long been more interested in selling the subscriptions than anything else. What else can justify the Alumni card, where they get a yearly subscription for a card even though you have long stopped being a student?

If you are indeed a university graduate, you can obtain an nus card via https://cards.nusextra.co.uk/affiliate/alumni

Having said that, obtaining it through the link i stated, i don't think you can then do the amazon deal as you won't have a uni e-mail.

E.T.A - Ok, maybe they've changed things, for the amazon deal you just need to send a pic of your NUS card: https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/feature.html?docId=1000741813

I still saved a bunch of money regardless.

I was studying last year, I put in the details for my course and it went through, I don't really see the issue with that. I didn't know at the time I could have applied for the card to be honest, the college didn't tell us.

As for people applying for the card without actually having done any courses or anything, I get that you want a discount but the definition of fraud is "wrongful or criminal deception intended to result in financial or personal gain", wrongful deception intended to result in financial gain is exactly what you're doing, so you know, anyone saying it isn't fraud is wrong.

You won't be able to use one of these cards on the Unidays site - I had a card from Endsleigh last year and it does not recognise it as an eligible place of study. However, despite this, I made huge savings on the card through NUS Extra and in town - Wilkos in particular - 10% off in Exeter, but I could not use it in Wilkos in Torquay as was told by a member of staff that discount in Wilkos is only for purchases made at a store that has a University in town.

Enrolling in Amazon Student Without a Recognised E-mail Address:

If you are 18 or over and able to provide proof of enrolment in at least one course at a university or college located in the UK, you may be eligible to enrol in Amazon Student through an alternative process.

To provide proof of age and enrolment, please send an e-mail to [email protected]amazon.co.uk from the e-mail address associated with your Amazon.co.uk account.

In the message, include a scan, photo or screenshot of one of the following:

• A valid NUS Extra or NUS Apprentice Extra card (must show your name, institution, and date of expiry).

• A proof of student status letter (must be printed on official institution headed paper and include student name and address, course details and start date, expected graduation/completion date).

• A tuition bill for the current term (must include institution name, course details and start date, student address).

• A tuition invoice for the current term with your name and your institution’s name on it.

• An official acceptance letter for the upcoming term (must be printed on official institution headed paper and include student name and address, course details and enrolment date, expected graduation/completion date).

If we determine you're eligible, we'll send you a follow-up e-mail within 3-5 business days that contains a link which allows you to complete the sign-up process without an .ac.uk e-mail address. However, you must sign-up for Amazon Student within 14 days of receiving this follow-up e-mail, otherwise you will need to contact Customer Service again to register. By completing this sign-up process, you agree to our Terms and Conditions.

The fraud act says:
Wrongful or criminal deception intended to result in financial or personal gain.

However there is no Wrongful or criminal deception as clearly if there was the NUS would have taken a enhanced stance or resort to some checks.

If there is no deception, there is not an argument. In law you need both the physical ie Actus Reus and the Mens Rea (the mental act). If either is missing there is no crime.

Semi-related question...

Going through the process of getting braces (Very early stages) and the brochure for the private practice states 10% discount for students. I can get a NUS card outside of this deal anyway, but do you think this would be enough for me to be valid for it? In this situation, 10% is hundreds of pounds so I'm very keen to apply it. The loophole would be applying for a course (the 1.99 courses posted in the comments for example) and then technically speaking you could say you're a student on that course.

The fraud part would be those who are putting in fake dates, changing dates etc, that is when it becomes wrongful.

I pretended to be a student to get this, it was OK for the first week or two but I found things started to change. now I don't get up till late afternoon, don't wash much barely brush my teeth. I also Keep going back to my parents raiding their fridge bumming money off them. I don't walk anymore I get lifts, I drink more mainly cheap bottles lager or alcopops. I've put weight on eating kebabs and pizzas. I hang out at skateboard parks or Starbucks, frequent charity shops. I could go on so be warned just for the sake of saving a few quid is it worth it, well this 49 year old thinks so.

Reported to NUS as apparent aiding and abetting fraud
TescoCookieBuyer2013
11 Feb 16 #308
I don't agree, one simple way for NUS to do this is take the money, dispatch the cards and then cancel the cards, T&C states no refunds etc. One easy way for them to make money, the discounts aren't affecting NUS anyway they're still getting paid by us and the companies lol, most that will happen is some companies will decide to stop the NUS discount

Don't get me wrong though, I'm not shaming anyone, I just wanted to give my opinion as loads of people were saying it wasn't fraud. If someone feels they can exploit something and they aren't worried about consequences, good luck to them

it's a legal loophole NOT fraud. Loopholes exist in all rule based systems; taxation, accounting, trading, hedging, internal controls etc etc people find loopholes & exploit them. it's up to the owner of the process with loophole to plug it. In the interim - fill your boots!

I open a new gmail account every month, followed by a new Amazon account. I then subscribe to Amazon Prime for free 30 days....I've been doing it for months. it's a loophole & I'll enjoy it until Amazon plugs it.

People saying its fraud need to get a life.

Well said. It's not like they are committing benefit fraud or clearly charging for expenses when not required. Yes where do you draw the liNE. Yes because I am.

Unlike some it's not fraudulent either, as I'm a post grad student who has a family - and for the purposes of the HUKD scum balls, my job is related to my degree subject matter and I have no student debt.

I've no problem with people getting these cards if they really are studying. The initial post however and specifically this:

That's bordering on encouraging people to submit fraudulent applications. I'd suggest that HUKD admin seriously consider rewording that.

Apart from the savings to be had, I'm actually really looking forward to do the course (photography) and already seen a digital marketing course as the next one on the list.

As for your premise that graduates will 'make sure they stay under the wage cap', because apparently paying back 9% of earnings over that level is so horrible a prospect - that's such a level of stupid that I hope for your sake you're just a troll.

Just a warning for those who are concerned- those who aren’t are free to ignore this. You need to be eligible ie following a course. If you don’t and make up the course or pay £10 for an online course but don’t follow it, you’re likely committing two possible offences: fraud by false representation and obtaining services dishonestly. Plus every time you show the NUS card for a discount, you’re holding yourself out as a student. If you’re not in truth studying, and are dishonestly claiming the discount, you’re at risk. I’m a lawyer ok. It’s just not worth it. This thread is like watching the city riots a few years back: in the sense of people thinking if everyone does it (looting there), it must be ok. If you disagree with my view, fine, your risk. But don’t try and convince yourselves or others you’re not committing an offence. If you get detected, any jury would convict when a non-student is claiming a student discount, in full knowledge they’re not. About one in five UK adults has a criminal record. Much harder to get employment. If you’re desperate to get an NUS card, make sure you study an eligible course. And NB the alumni card terms make clear you have to have graduated from a relevant institution within the past 12 months.

I got a similar NUS Extra card deal last year and I contest that you don't need a university email address or standard university NUS (not extra) card. If we are talking about the NUS EXTRA card, Amazon refused to give me a discount on scanning this card alone.

If you are purchasing this mainly for the Prime discount, I advise that you check with Amazon first that the NUS Extra card alone will entitle you. If the answer is now different, I will be getting in touch myself again to get my discount too!!

This isn't an error on their part though so it's not really comparable to price errors or glitches which are normally down to someone's negligence. This is more of an open system which allows "students" an easy process of signing up. As I said, I'm not shaming anyone because as you can see I took advantage of the Tesco Cookie glitch a few of years ago but I do believe there should be a line. Its funny that someone mentioned Starbucks in reply to one of your comments, because celebrities and big companies have been using "loopholes" for years to pay less tax etc. but people are quick to criticise them but will happily exploit glitches, loopholes or whatever else they can find to save money (not directing that at you, just a point I'm making)

The best thing about the NUS card is that airlines accept it as valid ID for domestic travel as well as travel between Britain and Ireland. For £13 a year it's like a Common Travel Area passport for undocumented migrants to easily move freely among the British Isles.

I had an NUS card that I got free when I opened my first bank account, I think I used it maybe twice. I don't think paying for the privilege of tiny discounts on shops I never go to is a great deal, in the long term I reckon I'd be spending more money 'trying to save' than just not spending the money in the first place, but hey that's just me. That Amazon prime discount isn't bad though.

Also fyi if you have a standard university or college card, Mcdonalds accept that for a free cheeseburger/mcflurry with a meal, no NUS card needed!

If people have signed up for even the £2 course, they are not lying to anyone. What they have done is above board, is not fraud and is completely eligible.

The OU PI number is your personal identifier. It's the number the use for all your exams to anonymise you to the markers.

They are unique to each student and i know from when I did an OU degree the NUS validates them so once you cease studying the PI you had will not be validated by the NUS

I had few times when the OU had not fully processed my next course and the NUS site would not let me proceed until the OU fully processed my course through.

I was worried to post this a I got a 5 year one a couple of years ago. I'm do have a vague memory of small print and asterisk sign with a line about you don't need to be a student to apply. This is when they first came out of course so may have changed. My area is a CO-OP monopoly so i loyalty swipe/NUS swipe/ then store voucher to the max. i.e Spend £55.50 get loyalty swipe first, then NUS swipe to £50 then £5 off £50 spend...boom. Cater to which ever voucher you get from the store 50p off £4 £1.50 off £15 etc, so effectively i get 20% off most of the time which is what staff get at pay weekend only!!! Also , just got 6% off instore with card (whithout the education online form filling) for an Apple Air 2 then £135 off for trading in iPad 2 and iPhone 4...double boom

@pete525 Through purchasing online training, I am able to meet the criteria for an NUS Extra card (see link below, part time education is eligible). The discounts are obtained by virtue of having an NUS Extra card. Where's the fraud in that? It's not like it's a fake card. That said, I can see that one of two things will happen shortly, either the merchants will stop accepting the card or NUS Extra will need to tighten up their criteria like Unidays.

Has anyone any ideas of how to do this with Unidays? Is there a way around not having a university email to get unidays? As this offers a lot more discounts and online codes, I'm actually a student too? Just on maternity leave so they've disabled my uni email
Thanks

Ordering a course just makes it seem like you legitimately signed for a student card as you will be studying. Not buying a course means that your just after a discount card. I'd rather pay £2 for a course and then play dumb if they question it.

"Manchester Met Students Union", you can opt for 3 years without PI number.
Dont need to purchase a valid course either.

13 Feb 16 #588
Obviously its just an option and down to the individual. Knowing those options, its then down to the individual. I must admit, I thought the same as you and have ordered one of the photography courses for £2, but whist it makes it a "genuine" (I use that term loosely) aplication, its then only valid for 1 year. I fully expect that once the card is accepted, it will run its course, so yes its a gamble, but maybe a worthwhile one.

Possible try and find a student union closer to you, if you dont want to use Manchester. Might still work.

"Open Uni Student Association", apparently doesnt ask for PI number either

PI is the OU's Personal Identifier, its the number you get to use on all work and exams.
They are unique to each user and if you try making a random one up unless you get luck and get one of someone who's actually currently actively doing a course the NUS validation will reject it.
PI's of people who have finished a course (such as I) will not validate if you are not actively studying.

365pizza
13 Feb 16 #598
My thoughts as well. Its a throwaway £2 that might prove useful. Still not sure whether to use this for just a year, or go for the whole hog with a dodgy 3 year OU course.

I noticed that putting in OP, it gives start dates of September for course starts. Would that mean the card has a start date from Sept 2016 (Or 2015 if you put in last year), or be from your application date?

Cool ok ta. After reading back, I was half expecting a sarky comment from a lazy student with too much time on their hands suggesting I had to read every comment and write an essay to get the answer! lol

Ive actually got a MS Office 365 Student license for 3 years, which says its an Aussie Uni - but I'm guessing if I tried using that I'd possibly get that pulled! How likely is it they'd check? I only really want this for Amazon. I miss Prime after the sods cancelled my "family group" without explanation!

It's not working for me even though I purchased a legitimate Diploma in Photography course from Shaw Academy (£1.99)!

I'd looked at that gourmet card on there too. I was thinking it was a bit naf as places like Prezzo only give a 25% discount (whereas taste give 50%) - then realised its the full bill including drinks. Thats a better option as when I go to a restaurant with my wife, the food bill is £30 and drinks £120 lol

Clearly it is people who post yet another iteration of the same question expecting someone to write yet another answer just for them rather than read the posts who are the lazy ones, and before you complain that there are too many posts to read them all (I have read them all), consider how many fewer posts there would be if the same question did not get posted over and over.

i have just ordered. Can the OP update the description to confirm if it is compulsory to actually sign up for a course or not because I just processed without and it does not look necessary to actually do so although there are notes to say where to buy cheap courses. the description isn't clear and I couldn't find anything in the first few pages of comments either. Also when selecting a course, is there a tried and tested course that has been accepted without actually having to sign up? I did "Home Study Courses" and made up a number. Thanks

Not everyone who likes a bargain is on benefits: I am 62 years old and work 35 hours a week, my husband is 71 years and works 35 hours a week (physical work). We are both students by the fact that we are completing Apprenticeships remotely via a FE Business College for English, Maths and IT as part of NVQ level 1, 2 and 3 vocational qualifications. It's not necessary to be a wailing student attending a university building for a few hours a week without doing any paid-work the rest of the week, to qualify for this deal. Thank you BuzzDuraband for enlightening us about potential benefits we have been missing.

Please explain how this IS a fraud? The deal is if you are on a valid course you are eligible to buy one of these cards, if somebody decides to lie and claim they are studying something when they are not, how is that the fault of the OP or HUKD in general?

Your best deal to date was about a tub of Ben & Jerry's, if somebody decided to go steal a tub rather than pay for it, does that mean you are advocating theft? Should that deal have been removed because somebody could do something different from the offer and try something illegal?

Yes there are some people here openly scamming the NUS, but there are plenty who are not, I am eligible and didn't know about the deal, should I suffer because others take it upon themselves to lie about something? I think not, if you do why are you even on this site?

If people really must complain they should be doing it about the people asking for PI numbers rather than about a totally legitimate deal (although just moving on would be better still)
365pizza
14 Feb 16 #650
A PI number is needed though to complete that, which I suspect might give the game away if a "dodgy" number is entered. I wonder if anyone has managed to successfully blag a card with this method. (I can see people have applied but until they get the card, no one is the wiser.
