You couldn't have said it any better my friend, so many people don't know how to shave properly and the whole process behind it. Everyone should take around 10 mins to read up to gain a little more info. Your face is one of your most unique features - why do a bad job on it when shaving? GL people

Hi sandford,
Before I started using 'Clean Shaven' blades I was a gillette fusion proglide user. I was a bit sceptical about Clean Shaven but when my last Gillette blade became blunt and I couldn't find a deal for the blades I thought I'd give Clean Shaven a go... have to say, they're excellent! The holder has the blade at a slightly more obtuse angle then I'm used to but that doesn't matter as the blade moves (just a minor niggle). I'm very happy with the blades and I'm happy to recommend to anyone giving them a go. I haven't noticed any irritation whatsoever. I certainly won't be going back to Gillette. When you think what Clean Shaven produce their blades for it just shows how the likes of Gillette et al are ripping us off. Yeah they'll claim they have R&D cost, publicity and all that associated BS but at end of the day, if a small British company can beat their prices and deliver a product that shaves as well if not better, that sounds like we've been getting ripped off to me. Clean Shaven for me from now on. If you give it a go please let me know your thoughts.

I did that with my DE tonight after a shower, Full 3 pass shave in 5 minutes.
I used to shave every day with my gillette as it does not get close at all, Now I go 2 days between shaves so in theory it is quicker anyway. Also I do not look like a spotty teenager anymore which is a bonus due to far less irritation.
Costs me maybe 25p a week! Honestly people only use cartridge razors because everyone else does and they are scared of a de razor....even though it is still a safety razor!

Also started with the Edwin Jagger DE89 a while back http://www.edwinjagger.co.uk/edwin-jagger-chrome-knurled-de-razor.html and was waiting for this to come down in price, but opted for the parker 99R instead which is £17.83 delivered at the moment http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B003VS1UX4?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o05_s00

I prefer the Parker to the EJ as the longer handle and extra weight give me a better shave, and prefer the butterfly opening system....

And Tom6195 if you are getting stinging from the alum thats a sign the you have irritated the skin , be very careful not to press at all and to resist the temptation to go over the same patch more than once a pass........Mantics vids are very good

I'd advise caution before buying one of these. I have one, along with a brush.blades, the works and they are sitting in the shaving mug for over a year. I couldn't get along with it all no matter how I tried. The whole shaving "routine" with these is extremely time consuming, especially if shaving in the morning before work.
They are extremely unforgiving and will easily cut and or irritate your face.

I looked at your link and much of it appears to relate to far more invasive use - and even then the figures seem to be quite low (if I understand the wording they refer to 50 severe cases in 10 years worldwide?). Understand that I'm not a medical practitioner - hence why I have sought their professional advice and used this product not only with zero side effects but to enormous medical benefit. Razor burn and related infection has been a huge problem for me for a long time, about 20 years ago my boss sent me to a doctor as my face was bright red and I looked like I'd been hit with a flame thrower. Before using this product I would frequently suffer shaving infections and was placed on antibiotics for them a number of times.

Of course there are people who have averse reactions to all sorts of medications; even commonly used ones. This particular preparation however is one I've seen used in two hospitals in the UK freely available to everyone to use right next to taps, even for public access. Another hospital had signs encouraging the public to use it as well; the very same preparation as the one that I'm using. The cautionary label on the bottle indicates that one should: "Avoid contact with brain, meninges, eyes and middle ear."; other than indicating that it is for external use only and to be kept out of the reach of children, there are no other warnings indicated.

For wider user feedback look at the feedback on the Amazon product link I originally listed, from a cursory glance I found no postings showing significant problems and all the ones I read seemed to be from layman users (some also using it on the face). Personally I have used this preparation (and an identical equivalent in Australia) for over six years now; a colleague of mine (with even more severe skin problems) also started using it with similar results based on his own medical advice as well. For me it's been a bit of a life-changing thing.

Really good price for a nice DE razor. Bought the long-handle version of the same razor a couple of years ago after having used Mach3 / Fusion blades for the best part of the last decade. I do find I get a better shave with this (particularly when I have much longer stubble / a modest beard), however it takes a little time to 'learn' how to use it properly, and it generally takes me a couple of mins longer to get a good shave done. Still, I think on balance it's worth it for those dissatisfied with the long-term cost of using cartridge razors.

Using it does not equal knowing everything about it. Your choice. I see and treat CHL and other forms of hypersensitivity, so was warning you. But feel free to ignore my advice.

This is an older review of CHL hypersensitivity that you can read if you are so inclined. I cannot access newer reviews for public consumption as they all need a password to access protected content:

I recommend it be considered as something that worked for me and based on considered, professional medical advice; three chemists in two countries have said the same, one of them is actually a very well regarded practitioner who I believe is published in a number of medical journals in Australia, I trust his advice completely. As for the GP not knowing about CHL sensitivity - given that they use this very preparation at my local surgery (and at my local hospital) I would be alarmed if they didn't know about this directly.
indyjukebox
14 Feb 16 #67
I do not know about your chemists, but a GP is a GP. ie a generalist. He/she may not be aware of issues around long term CHL use. Certainly CHL is used in medical preparations including mouthwashes. However the variant you link to is quite strong and used to prep hands pre operatively. I wouldnt want to use it every day and never on a sensitive area like my face. It may work for you and you might be lucky to get away without hypersensitivity. But if you develop it then it may cause problems if you need surgery in the future as CHL is commonly used in most surgical prep fluids. Your face, hence your choice; but I wouldn't go around recommending it to others.

Shaving will ALWAYS be a chore and never a joy. My shaving has the following steps:
1. after shower, take disposable blade that is sitting in shower
2. use shower gel on face.
3. shave as quick as you want and apply as much pressure as you want.
- done in less then 2 minutes from beginning to end.
Just do however you want to do
davocc
14 Feb 16 #65
That's curious - I've been told precisely the opposite by two doctors and three chemists, one said it was unusual but not harmful. As with any compound, whether it be considered a medical supply or other, there will always be the chance of adverse reaction but for me this has been absolutely essential. In Australia chlorhexidine is already used in anti-acne facial scrubs (over-the-counter brands), hence why it was first recommended to me as a stronger variant. My own response has simply been a massive reduction in infection and problems, nothing else.

Thailamps on eBay for feather blades, think it works out about £16 for 100 blades delivered. Lasts me about 2 years shaving 3 times per week and 1 blade per 3 shaves roughly. No point in being frugal with blades, I notice a huge difference in blade feel after 3 shaves and at 16p each it's not worth the hassle.

Last year when I was researching to switch over from safety / electric to DE looked at this one ,Edwin Jagger DE89 & Muhle R89 Closed( check reviews amazon) Eventually opted for Muhle R89, as more forgiving than others. Using Astra platinum blades, Taylors of Bond Street Sandlewood Shaving cream & oil,a good badger brush, shaving brush stand and osma block for those Nicks & cuts you'll inevitably get at the start. persevere and like me you'll wish you'd moved over to DE sooner better shave & much cheaper in long run. Good deal, I use super max blue diamond blades, they're really cheap, think my Dad gave me a box with about 500 in it. Certain blades seem to suit different razors, and these seem to suit mine, I got it in America for $20.

If you're new to this game, coming from a Gillette turbo or something, I'd recommend baby steps. Get a razor and some blades, but keep the shaving gel and the rest of your routine. Using one of these requires some getting used to, don't press hard! I'd also recommend a variety of blades, see what suits you, some seem to suit me better than others, some are also a lot more forgiving, Astra are a good start or shark ones.

As you get used to it. start to experiment with the soaps, brushes, etc. I have quite sensitive skin, so stuck with Nivea gel for a good while (mostly because I had a couple of cans)

Here's a list of blades that have been recommended by others in numerous posts across the web:

Astra Superior Platinum (not stainless!)
Polsilver Super Iridium
Feather
Personna Platinum
Gillette Silver Blue
Gillette 7 o'clock Yellow (Sharpedge version)
Permasharp Super
Shark Super Chrome
Indian Wilkinson
Sputniks

There's a number of sellers on eBay that offer a mixed selection of blades for circa £7. Better to try a variety to see what works for you rather than buy a bulk load of one blade only to find that you don't get on with them. I made that mistake, purchased 100 x Derby blades for under £6 delivered. After using only five, decided to try other blades and have not used one Derby blade since! Oops!

That's a rather good price for that razor - I tried these a few years ago (unsuccessful unfortunately, could never get it quite right) and I've personally found that the Extreme 3 disposables seem to do the best job for me. Believe me I've tried *everything* spending thousands in the process over the years.
One thing I discovered - using Hibiscrub (the pink stuff surgeons use as a pre-surgical scrub) before shaving and I scrub with a loofah type pad, it's rough but this combo kills infection and reduces quite a bit as the Hibiscrub is a powerful disinfectant and lasts quite some time. You can also use the Hibiscrub afterwards too to wash down, it's not harmful and doesn't sting - I confirmed it's ok with the the GP too (a chemist put me onto the idea years ago). This is the stuff I'm talking about: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Hibiscrub-Health-Care-500-ml/dp/B001AV4C20/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1455403882&sr=8-1&keywords=surgical+scrub

I wouldn't go around recommending it to others. Chlorhexidine is a very strong disinfectant and does dry the skin excessively. I know as I use it most days on my hands. It is also known to cause some serious hypersensitivity reactions. The 4% strength is at the stronger end of the spectrum and thought to be the reason for a higher incidence of CHL hypersensitivity in english healthcare workers; as opposed to the Danish who use 0.5-1.0% CHL. Using it occasionally is ok. but I certainly wouldn't be using it regularly and never on my face!

Can never understand how or why people change DE blades after as few as two shaves? One Merkur blade (not the best and I certainly wouldn't recommend them to beginners!) lasted me one week shy of a whole year! Current Astra blade that I'm using in a Merkur 38c has been in use since July of last year. Granted I don't shave more than once every 5-7 days, sometimes it's slightly longer.

I find if you've got a lot of facial hair to go over it with clippers or electric razor to thin it out first otherwise you can end up with serious skin irritation trying to remove thick facial hair in one go.

Dunno how others do it but I only use the alum if I'm actually bleeding other than that I slap on menthol vanishing cream which is amazing stuff and don't get any razor burn or spots now.

Might be worth trying a premium wet shave soap or even the blue bowl palmolive stuff from the supermarket just see of tinkering helps, also make sure your blade is sharp as a slightly blunt blade can cause nasty problems

13 Feb 16 1 #30
Whiteheads are because bacteria got in your pores. I know from experience with acne caused by myself that you don't want to start treating it with anti bacterial lotions and stuff like that. I started getting acne on my forehead in 2012 when I was 41, before that I had absolutely flawless skin, I treated it with salicylic acid, neem, benzoyl peroxide and it got worse and worse. I then thought hmm what's the cause of this, in the end it was me. I stopped treating it and it's 90% better, the 10% that's left is because I now have a skin picking problem as a result of the stress of it occurring in the first place. In my experience whiteheads will sort themselves out, just don't go down the route of getting in to a skin care regime, you don't need a skin care regime, that's so companies can make money out of you. Your skin looks after itself, just protect it from the Sun. If you go killing off bacteria on your skin with lotions, you also kill off the good bacteria and thus the bacterial balance of your skin.

Where possible keep things simple. I never had a skin care regime, the acne that occurred on my forehead was because of stress, I then attempted to treat the acne, it worsened, I got more stressed, I got more acne, so on and so forth.

Hi Tom,

The 23c is long handled so be careful with the amount of pressure you are using. The alum block will sting if you press to hard or technique is poor. Also I have never really got on with murker blades, try a different blade maybe, the green Astras are good. Your routine looks good.

my routine went like this.

1. Wet face with hot water
2. Man cave face wash and rinse
3. Pat face down
4. Lather up shave cream. Don't think I did this right first off!
5. First pass WTG, short passes due to the amount of hair there was.
6. Wash face with warm water after first run, re-lather.
7. Another pass WTG, this felt much smoother and I think I got a better lather this time.
8. After covering all of my face, and with no cuts I washed with cold water then hit with alum bloc - this really stung!
9. Left the alum on for about 1 minute while tidying up. Then washed it off.
10. Applied maca root razor relief. This felt some what smoothing but also a bit tingly.

Now, the the reason for starting this thread is that when I woke up this morning I saw about 4-5 small whiteheads scattered around my face :disappointed:

This is where I should add that I have not shaved for about 3 years, and have just been using a babyliss stubble trimmer all this time.

Could these whiteheads just be a result of not having stuck a razor to my face for so long?
