https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=N8hlFdEH0Cc watch the crash test dummy videos and make an informed decision about you child's safety in a car. It is now the law to rear face until a child weighs 15kg. Then high back boosters with side impact protection are by far the safest seat. what's a 100 quid if it means you prevent spinal injuries. The back seat is also far safer than the front. In summary these cheap booster seats are crap and many manufacturers are phasing them out of production.

Can't believe people still buy these, which have been campaigning for years to get them banned as they offer no protection in a crash.

I've managed vehicle crash testing, Britax is by far the best, but you have to have the seat ISO fixed and top tethered to get the full benefit.
That said even a Britax seat without ISOFIX engaged or top tether is better than nearly all other car seat (not just boosters), have seen so called big brand seats just fly off.
That said a booster seat was only ever meant to raise the child's height in relation to the belt (at shoulder point).
When you get 20kg and over these seat are fine, but as with anything if you want more then buy better.
PS. I do not work for britax, was a car OEM and we just added car seat as part of testing our vehicle structures.

I honestly thought these death traps were now illegal. My 2 children are far too important to put on one of these. I would rather walk

If your kids are that important then why don't you walk everywhere and cut the risk of a crash to zero.
