I've had this over a year now and I'm still amazedat what it could/can do for the price and considering the pathetic amount of RAM. It runs Kodi in it's sleep with full hardware decoding of 1080p footage all the way up to 50gb uncompressed rips.

I also use it for viewing RAW photos out in the field, I had a nexus tablet previously and it was an utter pain because you needed to install raw codecs and a raw image viewer etc. Because this is windows you just plug the card reader in and open RAW photos in the default windows image viewer. They can also be opened in Photoshop CC (only god knows how but it works well enough for minor edits) You can plug it into any tv or montor and have an instant mini PC which works adequately for browsing, office applications, image editing, youtube etc. It drives a 1080p display effortlessly.

It's not a powerhouse but I was amazed at what it could do and how versatile it was for £59 so it's an even bigger bargain at this price. Considering how limited some android tablets are at this price it's exceptional value. I also think it's a superior alternative to amazon fire tv, generic android and windows kodi boxes etc as it does everything they do but has a built in screen and battery too so you can take kodi to a friends house, make a functioning temporary pc out of a friends tv etc.

I've honestly never bought anything so cheap that's been so capable. It's certainly not a super computer but it's more capable than it has any right to be for the price.

Years ago I bought an android tablet for the same price that had 512mb of ram, 8gb of storage, 800x480 screen, single core 700mhz cpu etc and it was absolutely useless compared to this.

Voted HOT!

The only thing it has going against it is that it's been out 18 months and something even better still will no doubt soon be available in the price range.

Mine went from full battery to nothing overnight and my first thought was some kind of failure when it wouldn't turn on. Turned out an app had drained the battery completely and it just needed charging.

If it's on standby you might have to long hold the power button for 20-30 secons until it powers of. Then wait a few seconds and power it back on. For some reason mine has a real problem being left on standby for a while.

I'm writing this on my linx 7. Even if you switch it on and do nothing with it. Even if the charger is plugged in, it still LOSES CHARGE.

WOWEEEEE major design flaw putting a low powered mobile phone battery in it and low power transfer usb charging port.

received mine today, but can not get it to turn on. I have charged it, and all that happens is that it displays a white Linx logo on a black screen. nothing else happens at all, and the only way to turn it off, is to hold the power button for around 10 sec (reboot)

faulty one do you think?

Zzzzzzzzzz

What kind of idiot would use HEVC for 1080p and 720p when the original bluray source uses x264?

Is that the best trolling you can come up with? None of the android boxes support 24p, not even the fire tv does.

Pathetic trolling attempt.

You would literally have to go miles out of your way just to ensure everything you played WAS encoded in HEVC just to justify the ability. 99% of the content that 99% of people would play through kodi is going to be x264.
fatdeeman
27 Feb 16 2 #129
What's misleading about it? This tablet plays direct 1080p bluray rips. Blu ray does not use x265 / HEVC it uses H.264/MPEG-4 AVC which this tablet handles fine.

Blu ray = x264
Blu ray rips = x264
Web downloadable content = x264
HD TV broadcasts = x264

I think you're the one who's being deliberately misleading because you know for a fact that literally all of the content available via KODI plug ins is encoded in x264. Original unaltered blu ray content is x264, ultravoilet downloadable content is x264, all of the rips and backups available online are x264 and most of the stuff you can download in x265 has been converted from x264.

One of the few sources of x265 is netflix and the android netflix app doesn't support 4k anyway pahahahaha rubbbish!!!

Blu ray is the very highest quality source of 1080p available to the consumer and you can take the data directly off a blu ray disc and play it back effortlessly with this tablet without compressing it.

I never claimed this device played 4K material and x265/HEVC is all but irrelevant for 1080P

And your Android box still cannot play back at 24p, a standard that's been around since the early 1900's

"current compression" complete and utter nonsense, poorly implimented future standard that's a decade away from being as common as x264 is now. There isn't even a physical media for films and tv shows that uses the standard, what a stupid thing to say.

"Fine if you just want to play your old media" I don't think most people consider blu ray to be old media, every blu ray ever released and every blu ray that ever will be released until the format is superceeded uses x264 and NOT x265.

Now go have fun with your x265 files that were probably converted from x264 in the first place.

Grossly misleading. Buddy at work has 10" version; same CPU but twice the RAM. Tried playing an x265 / HEVC vid at lunchtime. Utter rubbish. No tweaks or jumping through hoops improved matters. It may play old skool x264 in its sleep but it falls flat on its face with codecs that have been around since 2013. Fine if you just want to play your old media, otherwise stick with (or buy) your £30 S905-based Android boxes if you want a cheap media player that doesn't squirm at current compression.

There's something wrong with the HDMI output on these, mine worked for a month or so and then would not output to HDMI anymore after I disconnected and reconnected the HDMI cable. Could not find a way to fix it, ppl on linx forums have had the same problem and have not been able to find a fix.
nige182
26 Feb 16 1 #117
Having both myself I don't notice any speed difference between them really, but the 8 inch is built better, the screen is much clearer (same resolution, yes, but a far better screen for brightness, and finish, the 7 is a little grainy in appearance, hardly noticeable in most uses but compared with the screen on the 8 it is a mile apart) and on possibly a more personal note the size and weight feel nicer too. I believe I read the drivers on the Linx 8 are better too and can be installed on the 7.

Basically if the 8 comes up at a good price, don't hesitate, buy it, but given how cheap these are I can still happily recommend the 7. I was an early adopter of the Linx 7, getting it the first time it went 'cheap' (for the time) at £60, then Staples did the amazing deal of £50 for the Linx 8 and £80 for the Linx 10 and I grabbed both of those too.

But, the Linx 8 is £95 (inc. fiver delivery) on the Amazon marketplace. Unless I'm reading the specs incorrectly, the CPU is the same, screen res the same and both have 1Gb RAM. Not sure how the 8 could be much faster than the 7?

Is there a fix for the standby drain for these yet? Mine drains substantially overnight even a few hours sat there it noticeable drains. I know it's not something I have running in the background because I've got a laptop with the same processor and it has the same issue but to a much lesser extent. I believe you will need a tablet with a newer Cherry Trail Atom processor for HEVC x265 decoding & playback or a laptop/ mini PC with a Braswell Celeron or Pentium such as the N3050 or N3700. However there is no hardware decoding of 10 bit HEVC with any of these.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/271641277647?clk_rvr_id=826365108815&rmvSB=true

And I did this:

1) Plug 4 port cable into USB on tablet, with the switch set to data and keyboard plugged into one of the data ports.
2) Boot to BIOS - Hold DEL key as soon as you see the LINX logo.
3) Navigate to the Chipset menu using the arrow keys on your keyboard
4) Select the South Bridge option (it goes white when selected)
5) Press Enter
6) Select 'USB Configuration'
7) Press Enter
8 ) Select 'USB OTG Support'
9) Select PCI mode from the popup menu
10) Press Esc twice to get back to the main menu
11) Select "Save Changes and Exit"
12) Let the tablet boot into Windows, it didn't appear to be working once in Windows, so I shut down and restarted Windows and after loading back up I am now charging and able to use a USB device simultaneously!!!!!

I am able to unplug a USB device and re-connect it without issue while in Windows.

On the Linx 10 I still prefer to use Windows 10 in desktop mode, though I had to increase the scaling to 125% to avoid accidental input errors. With the 7" model it may need to be set closer to 150%.

If you upgrade to Win 10 using a media creation tool you may need to download drivers (available here after registration), I lost the screen rotation/touch functions and Windows couldn't acquire them automatically.

Have you thought about getting a Raspberry Pi 2 and installing osmc? IMO this is a much better/neater solution and unless your TV is really old it will work with the TV remote too
fatdeeman
25 Feb 16 #43
I also realised that Windows 8 makes a lot more sense on a touch device when I bought this, the touch interface isn't bad at all when you get used to it and then you can switch to the desktop mode when using it with a TV or external monitor. In my opinion the version of windows 8 supplied with desktop and non touchscreen laptops should have been totally void of the tiled interface, it's not a bad OS at all when you use classic shell to disable the stupid start screen (which actually works really well on a touch device!)

Works fine for me, any buffering has nothing to do with the tablet, it plays 50gb files of an external hard drive instantly.

I like these tablets so much I've bought a Linx 10 (for myself), Connect 7 (Linx 7 clone for sis) and Linx 8 for boyf.

Great little things if you know your way around Windows, not so suitable for those who prefer quick 'n' easy apps. A tempered glass protector is a must, as I had a pressure mark a few weeks in after buying my Linx 10 (swapped it out with Staples).

Had mine over a year, love it, use it every day. Obviously size may be a concern with the 7" but my sister uses a stylus with hers.

You were lucky, staples looked at the bad white bits on my 10 screen, reluctantly offered to send it to linx who then declined to fix it. Also after 1 year my 10 battery only lasts an hour. Anyone sourced a new 10 battery?

Because it nearly always comes up in Linx 7 threads, here is a link to how to get both power and data at the same time over the micro-USB port. You can charge, use a keyboard/mouse, USB memory or whatever else all at the same time.

MicroSD slot so just copy anything onto a card and you are sorted. Or use Windows networking to drag and drop from another machine.

Its Windows so run VLC or any program you want.

I had the Argos 8" tablet with 32gb rom and 2gb RAM. I thought it would be nice to have a full version of Windows on a tablet but it reality it was horrible. It upgraded to Windows 10 ok and there were no real bugs (I think the 2gb ram helped) but it's just an awful experience. The Windows store is full of crap and you soon realise that you really need a keyboard and a mouse to make good use of it in desktop mode. In which case you may as well buy a small netbook / low power laptop. If you have a very specific use then Windows tablet may be the way to go but for most people I'd say stick to Android or iPad.

I bought one of these last year (same dealer, same price), upgraded it to Windows 10 and the MS Office package plus a cheap SD card for storage and it is first class. This tablet is comparable to my iPad mini costing five times as much (better in some ways in that it has HDMI and USB sockets, doesn't need ridiculous propitiatory cables costing £15 to charge it, has easily up-gradable memory and a really good office package for free).
Heat added, this is a good deal.

I think it's a good tablet for this price and mine works fine. As usual, it's always the IT noobs who complained "the screen doesn't turn on" bla bla bla and actually can be fixed by changing a few system options.

the 7" screen is just too small if upgrading to Win 10, and there are glitches that just make it un-useable at this screen size...not voting either way, hardware and 365 is good but upgrading causes big issues
