Saw a poster in window of Manchester Princess St (by town hall) branch stating this there wasn't a time or date on it so must be anytime.

Be careful, Starbucks also pay their taxes, which includes VAT and employers NI contributions. They simply lawfully organise their affairs to minimise corporation tax in similar way many people do when putting money in an ISA, or contributing to a pension, or giving to charity.
I do not agree with the lawful manipulation of tax. But, it is the government that sets tax rules, blame them and not the corporations whose job is to maximise shareholder returns.
(N.B. I do not go to Starbucks, nor do I support their tax stance).

let me ask you a question. IF you pay tax (im assuming that you do!?) and you found a way around not paying it, and it was lawful, would you pay it?

Pret a manger have been doing filter coffee at this price this for years. In fact it's cheaper at 99p. And better than Starbucks. And they pay their tax.

This is very misleading. The tax affairs of Starbucks are designed to be complicated, so that they pay very little tax., there is no comparison between people using ISAs or giving to charity. If only it were that simple, it would be very easy then to force them to pay up.

In Starbucks I always buy a small filter coffee; you get free refills. It’s not advertised anywhere and sometimes the staff don’t know about it either…. They have to confirm it with the manager!

Britain is one of the biggest facilitators of tax avoidance in Europe. If the government simplified the tax rules to close loopholes companies couldn't make use of them to lower their tax obligations.

bought a filter coffee in Starbucks Cambridge last weekend, me thinking it's a coffee shop it would be a nice fresh filter coffee, nope I got a large mug of day long simmered boiled water with a hint of old coffee, It made me feel sick on the 2nd mouthful so I took back and ordered a real coffee, I have a bean to cup machine at home so maybe too used to decent fresh coffee.

I really enjoy good espresso, but there's no reason filter coffee should taste any worse. The thing is not to leave it simmering all day long . Just read some of the decent reviews of the Aeropress (like http://www.coffeereview.com/the-aeropress-coffee-maker-2/).

if this happens they will make fresh filter coffee for you or should give you an americano free, for speed (takes 5-10 mins for coffee to filter). Starbucks are all about making people happy.
You can't claim paying VAT as 'paying their taxes' . They're paying OUR taxes, simply handing over tax collected from us.
They are still tax dodging scumbags. Pathetic that as a very small business I pay more corporation tax each year than they did for a decade!

I'd be interested to know their policy regarding filter coffee freshness, how long they leave it keeping warm for.
I drink filter all the time at home (freshly made for each cup with a gold filter) and it tastes great. The last one I had in Starbucks was pretty horrible and I'm sure it's not just down to the beans.

starbucks policies for filter is that the coffee must be ground fresh daily, and the coffee gets 1 hr in the urn before a fresh batch
if your filter tasted bad it may be they are using yesterday's ground coffee that they didn't use up, or its been on longer than an hour
I regularly drink filter but it is an aquired taste as it is stronger than espresso

Absolutely right. There is so much damning of companies that are living within the rules which OUR government have set. This applies to all sorts of retailers. Whilst I see coffee as an expensive luxury ( I make my own espresso at a fraction of the price of any of the major Coffee chains), if I am out and want a coffee, Starbucks is never an option, as I find their coffee quite unpalatable. I don't agree with their tax stance, but if their coffee was the best at a reasonable price, then I would buy it.
For that reason, I use Amazon for a lot of purchases. I don't agree with their Tax affairs either, but whilst our government allows corporations to minimise their Tax, I don't see why individuals who have no option but to pay our taxes (and will end up in court if we don't) shouldn't use these corporations as long as they offer quality products or services for better prices.
Pret a Manger is my #1 choice for coffee on the rare occasion that I'm out and want coffee.

No coincidence we just happen to be lax on tax . Successive governments don't seem able to put a team of tax specialists to work on these abuses costing billions , yet can nail every person on benefits with a spare bedroom. Disgrace.

Multinational corporate tax avoidance has been going on for years - 30 years ago I worked for two major internationals; one in food, the other in medical supplies. BOTH paid 10x more "licence" fees to offshore holding companies than they declared as profit to the then Inland Revenue.
I don't like the taste of Starbucks coffee so won't be buying any in the near future.

These companies are doing EXACTLY what is intended with their tax payments. The EU decided that countries were able to set their own tax rate in order to produce competition between them in order to hopefully attract larger organisations to reside and pay tax in the less the fortunate countries. If Starbucks were forced to pay full UK tax on the entire of their UK sales then David Cameron would be happy to increase our tax rate by 20%.

Is it the Tall size that is £1? As I asked for Grande today and it was £1.75. They did confirm that they do free refills if you are sitting in though.
