So again, some form, &/or some kind of a 'reminder' of your Claim-Window could prove itself beneficial?. :-)

A full modern complete desktop tower (excluding an Operating System and DVD-RW) for just £97.94 is a very good Deal, for something in the region of an advanced form of a Bare-Bones System (with Server capabilities to boot!).

Here's the software updates download page for Dell Server: http://www.dell.com/support/home/uk/en/ukdhs1/product-support/product/poweredge-t20/drivers?rvps=y

The idle power consumption of this computer running windows 10 x64 with latest drivers from intel site and a 60GB ssd added is: 31-33W, i measured this using a power meter plug adapter. The SSD adds 1.5w idle power consumption.

So you can see the disks in disk manager? I guess you need to find a way to explain to whs that these are already got data on them. It will need to rebuild the tombestones ... Which is the term MS use for pointers to files, and they don't reside on The data disks.... However its years since I used whs.

I recall knowing how to use 1 or 2 'Virtualization' Software from back in the day?, sod only knows where them brain cells then ran away too?, hehehe.

Ahhhhhhh, how I WISH CONNECTIX were still in the Virtual Software game?, they made such 'methods' flawless to use, ALWAYS!.

Then Microsoft took it out the game & re-Branded it Virtual PC (& altered Connectix's game altogether ..... its a shame)

My brother has a HP Proliant Microserver that came up on here about a year ago. It's a bit loud, you can hear it in the next room at night, and the guilty fan is weirdly complicated to replace. It also has a stupidly bright light on the front.
Other than that he's been very happy with it, certainly no technical faults at all and it was very cheap.

Personally I wouldn't get one though, I'd go with this deal here.

My mum had a system that old until I gave her a laptop. Its power use was insane - even in its 'off' state, it drew somewhere around 20w, and using it for a bit of basic web browsing could easily push it up to around 150w. For the OP, if he replaced that old P4 with this, he'd probably break even on the purchase before Christmas.

I've got an old server I built for about £50 (excluding hdd costs) running a E6850.

I like Ubuntu desktop as it's more a home server than a dedicated server so the gui overhead isn't an issue.

Anyone know if this would run Ubuntu easily enough (driver issues mentioned earlier?) as I'd like a replacement build & this price suits my budget.

I've installed Ubuntu 14.04 LTS on a T20 without problems. I think all H/W had drivers, but it was just a test install so I can't be sure. Certainly disk/usb/displayport/networking were all working fine.

Hasn't one of these with a Intel Xeon processor been £175 after cash back once? I'm sure it was but they aren't any more, close to £400 before cash back so perhaps I'm mistaken. Considering I don't know what I will do with this the pentium will probably be fine. A decent upgrade from my N54L.

Do you have any links on the memory compatibility for the T20?
I've checked the handbook and that only listed ECC UDIMMs as compatible. IIRC servers can be a bit picky when it comes to memory - if I buy this I'd like to re-use memory I already have.

I do not see point way you want big case low end machine to convert to gaming ???
for extra or same money same FPS PS4 ?

Sony and Xbox they done this for you converted low end PC to gaming machines

Do not forget you need windows + GPU + bigger HDD + extra 4 GB of ram So total price maybe will be same as PS4 or cheaper couple pounds

When I have PS4 and powerful PC in general I do not see lot of difference between them But do not forget that my PC cost me 4 times more than PS4

My point the difference in graphic so minimal "yes PC better more pixel etc ..Yes I can do 4k" when you play the game you not looking pixel you enjoy gaming

25 Feb 16 #29
Great value, but essentially a repost. ServersPlus have had it at this price for 2 months.
Search 'PowerEdge' above...

For a server, I far prefer a barebones or minimal config like this, so I can spec it to my needs/budget.

RAID4 ??

Desktops usually have sound. This has, but it's basic. Below £100 after cashback is great value for what you get though.

Everyone seems to want o build these things into gaming machines, so before anyone asks, the PSU has no 6-pin power connectors for a higher performance gpu so the max power consumption gpu you could use would be 75W as that is the maximum that the PCI-E x16 slot provides. A GTX750TI should work. Beyond that, you can get 6-pin/SATA converters, or change the PSU, which is a non-standard size.

The main thread on this is here

25 Feb 16 #15
Not sure I would really describe this as a "server" having a single hard disk, and only one gigabit Ethernet port, my instinct would be to took for (at least) mirrored disks (better still use RAID 4) and twin network access - that way it would be far better protected - perhaps you could use the cashback to upgrade?

Still, as a basic workhorse, even as a standard desktop (with very basic graphic capabilities) unit this has much to commend it for the price. With the cashback (which seems deliberately complicated) it seems perfectly adequate.
Aramze to ukhotdeals1
25 Feb 16 2 #19
So it's not a server because you have to add hardware to it? Did you really think Dell would fill it up with drives for you at this price? It is a home user / small business server, no different than the HP micro servers. Without modification you can put an additional 2 * 2.5" disks where the dvd drive goes and up to 4 * 3.5" disks if you buy a sata card (2 extra ports required). If you require additional ethernet ports, you should check saturation of the existing connection first, then buy a NIC. I don't recommend it as a desktop as I would personally find it too noisy. You could swap out the fans but you will either have to be good with a soldering iron or buy an adapter as the motherboard fan header has 5 pins. There are, as always, other solutions.

Does anyone know which out of this server or the HP Microserver Gen 8 uses the least power and which is quieter?
Thanks

cjed to StockportGerbil
25 Feb 16 1 #23
I have both, The HP Gen8 is quieter, power consumption (at idle) is roughly equivalent (within 5W). The T20 has a more powerful CPU and hence a higher power consumption when running the CPU at 100%.

Thats a good point?, as Servers (generally speaking), are designed to be left permanently on.

So having something optimized with power efficiency in mind then your literally laughing.

I hear you on what your saying & all in regard to discontinued Product Lines & the like? (which would be highly unfair considering the 'Deal'?).

But that aside, as far as the Operating System in concerned, well .. I've mentioned in both my Deal Description & Dell themselves have re-iterated the same on their own website that this particular Server System of theirs does NOT come with an Operating System in it in any respect, of any notable form either? (so I was ok on that front ..... )

Interesting comment there?, thanx.

Note 1, HOPEFULLY some of my above supplied links would help a little bit in regard to firmware/Software drivers & the like?.

Note 2, Ironically I WAS coming back to my original post just now to fan the ever increasing waters of the ever increasing waves of the Media Streamers/KODI Fanboy people out there with a wee comment of my own!, but ..... hahahahaha (you beat me to it!) :-)

You can install the Chrome OS on this, Android OS on this, &/or KODI on this via some fancy Partitioning using things like GPart, Partition Magic & the like? (that would be AWESOME!, hehehe), knock yourselves out people? (figuratively speaking ofcourse?, lol). :-)

OP
A full modern complete desktop tower (excluding an Operating System and DVD-RW) for just £97.94 is a very good Deal, for something in the region of an advanced form of a Bare-Bones System (with Server capabilities to boot!).
Here's the software updates download page for Dell Server: http://www.dell.com/support/home/uk/en/ukdhs1/product-support/product/poweredge-t20/drivers?rvps=y

You've linked to a page of server 2012 the Dell doesnt support home Os's like ive said and some of those drivers dont work and theirs some missing i know ive been through it. Your making it out to be a desktop replacement and its not heres the Dell page. This is not going to be like sticking ram and a HDD in a Intel Nuc and installing windows although it is possible its not for the average home PC user its a bit more advanced than that to get all the drivers needed and installed.

Your PowerEdge T20 supports these operating systems:
Change Product
Microsoft Windows Server 2012
Microsoft Windows Server 2012 R2
Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2
Windows Server 2016
Note regarding operating systems not listed above:

Dell may not support an operating system for various reasons, including discontinued support from the software vendor, lack of availability with certain products, or other reasons.

For more information about an unsupported platform or operating system, please contact the software vendor.

I have a HP N54L that i retired for the Xenon version of this so i know a little about it, i have 2x8gb of HyperX 1866mhz ram and its fine although it only runs it at 1600mhz so you dont need error checking ram like you do with the Gen8. I have Windows 10 pro on mine as i didn't need a server OS for media serving in the home and via Plex because Windows 10 with a few reg tweaks was fine and a server OS would of caused issues with software i run on my server the issue with the Dell is its not suppose to run a home OS and their are no drivers for them on the Dell site so you have to beg borrow and steal them off different home machines with the same hardware i suspect the Pentium may be a little easier than the Xenon as its a desktop CPU. It was a bit of a pain but its been fine now for months i have turned off updates though as i dont want it updating drivers and causing it to crash because they are not comparable. This is not a machine the average user could stick a GPU in and use it as a gaming rig as it takes a little know how to get it running but as a server its great, i cant speak to the Pentium version but the Xenon is nearly as fast as my Haswell 4690k.
