I recently posted a deal on a Toshiba Qosmio laptop, which plummeted, but I wanted to see how it went before I bought it. Needless to say I was put off by the reception it received and went hunting!

Eventually I found this and I've just ordered one. For the price I was really struggling to find anything which would compare with the behemoth specs this delivers.

Granted it's a lot to spend on a laptop but I hope this can benefit someone else somewhere!

I got a 1080p version from them a few days ago for 640. Not exactly the same specs but happy with the cost. I do think a 4k screen and this gpu are a bad combo. Bit does seem like a good price

I've got an XPS15 with a fairly similar spec, though 2GB graphics I think.

Not tried games really, but it'll run 3x4k screens at once fine.

Incidentally, definitely worth looking at the dell outlet - mine wasn't much more than this last May, with an original RRP of £1500.

There are a good few 4k 17" screens around now. Not cheap yet though.

Not entirely convinced of a 4k screen on a "mid" range laptop, that said, that's a hell of a lot of laptop for the money. Goes for a grand on the dell website and even that's generally considered a good price! Nice find :stuck_out_tongue:

Yes HP do some for a start a few more about. But you can get a 960m for 739.

Good thing with the dells is easy to upgrade just a bottom panel. No ripping a laptop apart and then arguing warranty.

Got this laptop at over the holidays a few months ago, seriously nice build quality and nice matt finish. The 4k screen is pretty decent, quite alot say it's not bright enough but I think it's fine. Dell often has 2 identical spec system for different price. 3 years ago bought a 7720 for about 650 quid, instead of 850 for the XPS. Now if I got the XPS it would be in better condition. There are shortcuts, but dells quality isn't something you wanna bet on. Pay the extra for the XPS 15.

Don't know if it haschanged but I would never get another 7000, so many common problems with it - wifi card is the worst possible, £1 usb adaptor gives x3 time speeds. Background noise in headphones, awkward keyboard, charger got broken within 3 months.
nomnomnomnom to tanikk£
28 Feb 16 #66
Was that the old 7000 series? We use the new ones at work (this range) and they've been brilliant.

Sadly background noise is very common on laptops, not just Dell. The charger should be covered under warranty though? All things are subject to breaking, but it should be easy to get swapped out.

I can recommend the 1080p version of this laptop, but I'm not convinced by a 4k version just yet.

The partners dell is still working perfectly with Vista and is 7 years old.
My 17" Toshiba that Im using now, upgraded to win 7 is also 7 years old with zero faults but I did shove an SSD in to speed it up a bit.

The issue is, the 1080p in your links is not much cheaper than an equivalent version from dell would probably cost (of course with a few personal upgrades) and combine that with a student discount lots of people on here get from all the NUS card deals that have come and gone, it becomes much less compelling. The 4k one is slightly better priced, but I'd expect it to be even cheaper considering the downgrades compared to this model.

I got this from Dell Direct for £918 for business use so little to no gaming here. However, we use ours for Revit and AutoCAD (3d Architecture software ) and its amazing!! Swapped the HDD for a 480 ssd and its so speedy. Unfortunately I had a bad experience with PC Specialist so cancelled the laptop with them and ordered this directly from Dell instead. Speedy delivery, speedy laptop, 1 week delivery and I can throw all sorts at it. I don't play games however but can confirm the 960m works a treat with 3d architecturally programs. Battery is also very very good for the power, 5 hours approx. I upgrade my laptop every 2 years so comfortable this will last the course till then. For gaming, I would personally try and get 970m, really is a huge jump as I did sooooo much research on the 950m, 960m, 970m and 980m, to choose the right card for my needs. 980m is far too expensive (but a an absolute beast) and 950m just a liitle too underpowered!!! 960m and 970m IMHO is a good balance of power for the momey ;-) Ignore the bad comments, lovely laptop with some brilliant specs!! The power is so good, it has replaced my desktop so just hook it up to a monitor and never stutters or struggles and the 3d programs i use have some massive recommend pc spec!!. It only has one monitor HDMI output though but Dell sell a dock for extra monitors if needed. You won't be dissapointed, even if you like gaming!!! £849 is a great Bargain!!!!!! Good find OP. PS I have never had any problems with Dell and been using them years. In fact I have a 2nd dell laptop, I use the Dell Venue Pro 11 on the road which is a real beast of a tablet/ laptop with 14 hours battery life!! :-D. In regards to the 7000, If your a avid gaming enthusiast who wants every setting on Ultra, then there are a lot more powerful alternatives (with some eye watering prices), but as a college, University or business user who wants some gaming thrown in now and then (Inc modern games), this is a great laptop! 10/10

I've owned / purchased 4 Dell's in the last 8 years or so. Two of them had dead pixels so returned them, one had problems with the screen randomly and intermittently going 'blank' - the laptop had to be repaired five times in < 10 month, my current one had screws missing in places and DELL told me that I must have lost the screws as their products are perfect and never come with any parts missing!

They were good 15-20 years ago - I remember using a blisteringly fast dual Xeon processor desktop with 1GB ram and SCSI drive back in the dot.com boom era - that machine was fantastic.

I agree - it does say more about my previous laptops - for some reasons, the companies I worked for they all used IBM (before they sold the business to Lenovo) Thinkpads - they were very comfortable to use, fast and close to indestructible.

and maybe some people aren't the technical guru that you are (I can see you on a service desk actually) and can't change things like SSD's themselves.

And maybe they don't need to rush out Tuesday and buy it but they may need to rush out on Monday to buy it.

why are you so angry anyway? You seem to have a problem with people not agreeing with you
Picard123
29 Feb 16 #92
LOL. You don't have to be a "technical guru" to install an SSD on this. All you have to do know how to use a screwdriver to remove ONE screw on the back cover, which then releases. Hint: You put the screwdriver into the screw and turn it.

If you're really stuck, here are some pictures. Hint: the M2 SATA drive is in the top left of the picture (it's the thing with the green PCB).

I'm not angry - I just find it hilarious that there are people like who have no actual interest in buying the laptop concerned, don't know anything about it, and don't have any idea about prices, yet chime in about about whether or not its a good deal. Anyone who is genuinely interested in spending ~£800 will do their own research and hunt around for the best price per spec, not listen to someone like you.

keep telling yourself I have no idea what I am talking about. That is the great thing about the internet YOU don't have any idea who you are actually talking to and why I may know a little bit about what I am talking about. What has come across is it is YOU who have no idea - because you make comments without backing them up. When you back them up you then link to INFERIOR products and then say I could have bought that one cheaper a year ago. You know what it is called inflation - has your house (assuming you own your own house) gone up in value since you bought it? If you sold it now would you sell it for the price you paid for it because as a buyer I would say to you "I could have bought it cheaper from you a year ago!".

You have brightened my day and you know what the amount of time it took you to find those INFERIOR links I would have actually earned the £60 difference that the laptop is now to what it was when you could jump in your time machine and buy it previously.

Also I never commented on whether I thought this was great or not - I just took umbrage to your comments making statements without backing them up and expecting people to listen to you.

Only a month old. They are both much better than this deal.

Word of warning to anyone buying from save on laptops, I ordered on Saturday and had to contact them to ask why it hasn't been dispatched yesterday midday. Apparently because I had selected free delivery within 5 days your order goes to the bottom of the que and they basically don't rush to dispatch your order. They eventually sent it at 5pm yesterday by next day delivery (which doesn't make any sense) and its waiting for me when I get home today. A slightly bizarre system covering the delivery side of things but meh.

I had bought dell Xps 15 with i7 (2nd gen),6Gb Ram,2Gb Geforce ,bought in 2011 ..a great machine.Dell has been reliable in my point of view.i had customised built laptop at that time on their website .i am not sure if that customisation option is still available.
Looking at the above deal. Its good value for money and a reliable brand.
