No its not, with "very occasional" use the Ni-Cad battery will fail as they self discharge relatively quickly (approx 1% a day) , once discharged the nickel cadmium crystallises rendering the battery knackered.
Decent price for the toolbox and basic tools. The drill will manage a couple of pieces of flat pack furniture and then die a slow and painful death in someone's garage before it's called into action 12 months later only to realise the battery is dead. Wish I'd learnt this lesson at such a good price myself though. :stuck_out_tongue:

I used to have this drill (bought in Sainsbury's on sale for £19 a few years ago) - it's great for very occasional use around the house. I've since replaced with the Bosch 18v Li-Ion, which is (very) significantly better.
Battery is pretty poor, the drill has very little power, but it gets small jobs done with little fuss.
The drill can be used for masonry... slowly and painfully, and probably ruins the drill. I would certainly not consider this drill for frequent use, but if you need something to drill the occasional hole in wood, or put together IKEA furniture, then it's quite decent.

Think of it more as a 12v electric screwdriver with a chuck than a drill. It will make pilot holes in soft wood but don't expect to put up shelves on external walls with it.

A drill this cheap definitely wouldn't manage it. A hammer drill should do just fine unless you've a high quality combi drill such as a mikita, dewalt, hitachi etc.

link quotes...
What is this “memory effect” anyway?
....When you start using your gadget, it will last shorter, since it is only 70% charged – and thus the assumption that older NiCd batteries last less than brand new ones.
dude battery tech (eg Ni-Cd) does NOT define this
all modern battery techs do the same(shame)
(designed capacity and actual capacity)
his view on the "memory effect" are a reach and wrong
check belarc or siw
this author in your link needs better knowledge and writing skills
its a reach what he says, im no advocate of Ni-Cd bats, yes they dont last as long during usage abut 50-60% of newer, are denser and require heaver cells last about half the time ie max 2-5 years instead of 5+ and they can only be charged in total less time
but Caveat emptor my friends
FWIW thanks for link though, its amazing how a blog can inform and "educate"

What a lot of twaddle! I have a couple of the latest B&D lithium ion drills, a 2 gear and a small hand driver type. I also still have my old ni-cad 18v Powerbase (B&Q) from the late 90s. It was always my drill at hand for years. It still works well. It's left in my garage and taken out every now and then when I want to do something outside - just shove it on charge overnight and it's fine.
The difference? It was peanuts. The new ones are not cheap.
And as for you assumption that it discharges at a rate of 1% a day ...that's a 100 days of charge!! And the battery is then knackered. Mine isn't. When it is, or if it ever is, I'll throw it in the bin. Paid for itself, over and over again.

Doesn't seem like a bad deal. Just purchased one for myself in Nottingham after reserving it online. For just under £20 you can't really go wrong. This is even more beneficial if you don't have any household tools to begin with - you're getting a good DIY starter set.

Not necessarily true, I bought my dad a Makita 9.6v nicad 6093D drill in the early Nineties (the classic boomerang shape one), it's hardly ever been used, I tried it recently and both batteries hold a perfectly decent charge it did't run down or loose power during a difficult fence repair job.

Nicad are old now not worth it you need li-ion just like mobile phones to hold charge n not to recharge after every few days or when you need it it's gone flat even as average joe diy not worth it
arch68 to pulseglobal
6 Feb 16#27
Wait now what? Mobile phone charge lasts a few days? I never got that memo ;)
I had a Black and Decker 18v Ni-cad one and the battery has just died 2 weeks ago. Very occasional use. It was bought in 2002. Funny how people were perfectly happy with Ni-cad and they didn't all die after a year until new tech came out. Not saying lithium ion isn't better, they obviously are, but they are also 3 times the price, will they last 3 times longer?
Only just, mostly Poundland type items. Still, overall good for a very light diy project, then throw out the drill as it'll die before the next one. The reason manufacturers still peddle inferior nicad kit is that they make money through the high replacement rate. Lithium is the only way to go.

6 Feb 16#16
Is it possible to put a lithium ion battery and put it in the drill? Or would it just be cheaper and easier to buy a better drill?
Thanks

If they do one to fit then it would work in the drill however you would also need a different charger too all adding up.

A better buy if its a drill you are after is this 20v li-on one at Argos its a hammer drill, with 2 batteries and 3 year warranty for £59.99
Or even better for £5 less a hammer drill, 2 batteries, 20v li-on, 13mm chuck (rather than 10mm as above) same 3 year warranty , baffled why original price was so much lower than the above though as it appears better spec and other than that only real difference is a soft case rather than hard.
