Current research indicates that it will only be of benefit before getting pregnant.

Folic acid supplements are available on prescription and recommended by the NHS and DoH. Ideally you need to take them before you get pregnant. Products like these are not a complete marketing con.
Of course it is better to get your vitamins and minerals from a healthy balanced diet however it is almost impossible to obtain the recommended amounts of folic acid from food.

Our midwife said are you taking the recommended supplements. I don't think it's a con. Sadly I saw a stat that 24% of pregnant women don't take folic while trying to conceive or during the first trimester. I'm no expert but doing as told by midwife and making sure my wife takes them throughout
